1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsStart by checking whether the problem affects every app and input or only one channel, device, game, or type of scene. Then check energy-saving settings, picture mode, and controls for the specific symptom. Menu names and available features vary by brand, model, and software version; the menu paths below are LG examples, not universal instructions.
First, find out whether the problem is the TV or the source
Open the TV’s own settings menu and compare its appearance with a few different apps, channels, and HDMI devices. If only one source looks wrong, focus on that source or its input settings before changing picture settings across the TV.
- One channel looks dim: Compare another channel. LG notes that weak broadcast signal quality or antenna alignment can affect an individual channel. Check that the antenna connection is secure.
- One HDMI device looks wrong: Reseat the HDMI cable at both ends and check for visible damage. Replace it only if it is damaged or unreliable; a premium cable is not a general picture-quality fix.
- Different inputs look different: Picture settings may be stored separately for each input. Check the settings while the affected input is selected.
- Every source looks wrong: Try the relevant TV setting changes below, then compare again using the same content and viewing conditions.
LG says a settings menu that is too dark to read, darkness limited to part of the screen, or blur during the first few minutes after startup may point to an internal issue rather than ordinary calibration. Contact the manufacturer’s support if these symptoms persist. LG’s dark-picture troubleshooting guide covers these warning signs.
How to fix a TV picture that is too dark
Turn off energy-saving dimming as a test
Eco, Energy Saving, or Auto Power Save settings can dim the screen. Temporarily turn off the energy-saving option and check whether the image improves. On LG TVs, the setting’s location depends on webOS generation: it may be under Settings > All Settings > System or General > Energy Saving; older versions may put it under Support or Picture. Use your model’s manual for the correct menu path.

Choose a picture mode that suits the room
Picture modes change multiple controls at once. LG’s US guide suggests Vivid for natural light, Standard for artificial light, and Cinema for a dark room. These are manufacturer recommendations, not universal calibration rules: room brightness, screen reflectance, the TV’s capabilities, and the content all affect how bright a picture appears. LG’s picture-mode guide explains its recommendations.
Adjust brightness gradually, and know which control you are changing
If changing the mode or energy-saving setting is not enough, raise the control that manages screen brightness or backlight output a little at a time. Its name varies by TV. Do not assume that Brightness, Contrast, and black-level controls do the same thing; their effects and labels vary. If a change makes the picture worse, reset picture settings for the current mode using the model-specific reset instructions in LG’s picture-reset guide.

If the picture is dark only in an HDR game, compare tone mapping
On supported LG gaming setups, HGiG can look darker than Tone Mapping ON. HGiG applies only to supported configurations, requires HDMI, and is enabled through Game Optimizer. Compare the available choices in the same game rather than changing unrelated settings. The LG HDR gaming guide describes this specific case; it is not a general explanation for a dark picture in movies or TV.
How to fix oversaturated colors
Reduce Color or Saturation gradually while viewing familiar content. If the TV has Dynamic Color or a similar enhancement, turn it off or reduce it; LG’s picture-control manual says Dynamic Color increases color and saturation to make the image more colorful.

- Adjust Tint only if you see a red-green balance problem.
- Adjust Color Temperature if the picture looks too cool (bluish) or too warm (yellowish).
- Check the current input and picture mode: available controls and their effects depend on the model, input signal, and mode.
Numbers copied from another TV or mode can mislead. LG’s 2026 US guide lists Color at 70 for Vivid in natural light, but 50 for Standard in artificial light and Cinema in a dark room. Those are mode-specific LG recommendations, not universal targets. See LG’s picture-setting recommendations.
How to fix a blurry TV picture
Check whether blur follows one source or input
Compare another channel, app, or HDMI device. A single broadcast or streaming source may be low quality, and picture settings can differ between inputs. LG’s blurry-screen guidance recommends trying Standard picture mode and turning off power saving; settings may need to be adjusted separately for each input. LG’s blurry-screen guide provides its model-specific steps.

For blur during fast motion, test motion processing
If the picture is clear when still but looks blurred during sports or fast action, look for motion-processing controls in the TV’s picture menu. An LG manual describes TruMotion options including Clear, Smooth, and User, with De-Blur and De-Judder adjustments; availability varies by model. Change one control at a time and check the result, since motion processing can alter the way movement looks. It cannot restore detail missing from the original video. LG’s picture-control manual describes these terms for projector models BF50NST/BF60PST, so do not assume the same controls or names appear on every TV.

| What you see | Check first | Then try |
|---|---|---|
| All content looks dim | Energy-saving setting and picture mode | Gradually adjust the screen-brightness or backlight control |
| Only one channel or device looks dim | Signal, antenna or HDMI connection, and selected input | Compare another channel or source before changing TV-wide settings |
| HDR console game looks darker than expected | Whether the TV and setup support the relevant game tone-mapping options | Compare HGiG and Tone Mapping ON in the same game |
| Colors look exaggerated | Color/Saturation and Dynamic Color or similar enhancement | Reduce color gradually; check Tint or Color Temperature only for the corresponding color-balance issue |
| Blur appears during fast action | Whether the source is clear when still and whether the issue occurs on other inputs | Test available motion-processing controls one at a time |
| Part of the screen is dark, the menu is unreadable, or startup blur persists | Whether the symptom remains after a restart and across sources | Contact the manufacturer’s support |
Because the recommended picture mode and available controls depend on the model and viewing conditions, make one change at a time and compare the same scene before and after. If the image becomes worse, reset the current mode’s picture settings rather than layering on more adjustments.
