If a Steam game launches on your PC but not your Steam Deck, the PC result does not confirm Deck compatibility: the Deck uses a different operating-system environment. Check the game’s Deck compatibility details, then work through low-risk updates, Proton settings, and file verification one change at a time. The right fix depends on the title and the exact failure.
1. Check the game’s Steam Deck compatibility details
Open the game’s Steam Store page and find its Steam Deck Compatibility section. Steam classifies games as Verified, Playable, Unsupported, or Unknown. These labels describe compatibility conditions; they do not diagnose a particular launch failure. Steam says a Playable game works but may need manual configuration. Unknown means Steam has not tested it, not that it is necessarily broken. See Steam’s Steam Deck compatibility guidance for what the categories mean.
If the game is marked Playable, review the listed requirements or configuration notes for that title. If it is Unknown, continue with the checks below rather than treating the label as a verdict.

Install any available SteamOS updates, restart the Deck, and try the game again. If you have installed third-party applications in Desktop Mode, temporarily exit or disable them and retry. These steps can help rule out software instability, but they are not guaranteed fixes for every game. Steam includes these actions in its Steam Deck troubleshooting guidance.

3. Try a different Proton version for the game
Proton is Steam’s compatibility tool for running many Windows games in the Deck’s environment. A game that works on Windows may not have a native Linux build, and forcing Proton is an option rather than a guarantee. Steam recommends trying the latest Proton version as a troubleshooting step.
- In Steam’s Library, highlight the game and open its menu.
- Select Properties > Compatibility.
- Enable Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool.
- Choose a current Proton version, close Properties, and launch the game.
Change only this setting, then retry the same game so you can tell whether the Proton choice affected the result. Record the version you tested. If only the Linux build is installed, forcing Proton may cause Steam to download the Windows build.

4. Verify the game files
Damaged or incomplete installed files can prevent a game from starting. In the game’s Properties, open Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files. Steam says verification may take several minutes.

5. Check platform support and the exact error
If Steam displays “Game is not available on your current platform,” Steam defines that as the game being unsupported on the current operating system. Check the game’s Store page for supported operating systems and hardware requirements. A game launching on a Windows PC does not establish that it supports Linux natively or works on the Deck. Steam’s platform availability guidance explains this message.
Note exactly what happens on the Deck: whether Steam returns to the Library, shows an error, hangs on a loading screen, or opens and then closes. The behavior and any error text help distinguish a compatibility issue from an installation or broader system problem.

6. Escalate with useful details
If the game still will not launch, consult the game developer’s current support information. Steam’s general launch guidance recommends checking requirements, updating the operating system and applicable drivers, verifying files, disabling non-essential software, and contacting the developer for game-specific help. On Steam Deck, apply driver advice cautiously: SteamOS is a managed environment, so do not assume PC driver installation steps apply.
Include these details when asking for help:
- The game name and the exact error or failure behavior.
- Your Steam Deck model and SteamOS version.
- The Proton version tested, if you forced one.
- Whether the game is installed on internal or removable storage.
- Which checks you tried and what changed after each one.
7. Reserve SteamOS recovery for broader problems
Steam documents two recovery options with different consequences. Repair SteamOS attempts to preserve games and personal content. Re-image Device resets the device and replaces its data with the stock SteamOS image. These are system-level recovery operations, not routine first steps for a single game that fails to launch. Back up important local content before a destructive reset.
If recovery is genuinely needed, Steam’s Steam Deck recovery instructions explain the process. Preparing recovery media requires a USB key of at least 8GB; that is a recovery requirement, not a fix for ordinary Proton or game-launch problems.
