To fix a slow website, test the exact page that feels slow, identify whether the delay comes from loading, interaction, layout shifts, or the server, then change one likely cause and measure again. Start with Google PageSpeed Insights on both mobile and desktop; use its field data to understand real-user experience when available and its Lighthouse diagnostics to investigate possible causes.
Measure the affected page before changing anything
Start with a URL visitors report as slow, then test other pages that use the same template or platform. A homepage, product page, and article page may have different bottlenecks, so a single test does not establish that the whole site is fast or slow.
- Open PageSpeed Insights and enter the full URL.
- Review mobile and desktop results separately; the layouts, resources, and user conditions can differ.
- Note whether the report has URL-level Chrome UX Report (CrUX) field data, falls back to origin-level data, or has no field data.
- Record the failing metric and the relevant Lighthouse audits before changing the page.
PSI combines simulated Lighthouse lab diagnostics with CrUX field data when enough real-user samples exist. Field data reflects a trailing 28-day period and may be missing for a page with too few samples. Origin-level data describes the site origin rather than that individual URL. A missing field panel is not evidence that the page passes. Lab and field results can differ because they describe different conditions and kinds of evidence. Google explains the distinction between PSI lab and field data.
The Lighthouse performance category score is a diagnostic summary: PSI classifies 90 or above as good, 50–89 as needing improvement, and below 50 as poor. It is not a universal measure of every visitor’s experience. Use the audits to choose what to inspect, and field data, when available, to assess how real users experienced the page.

Know which performance metric is failing
Google’s current Core Web Vitals are LCP, INP, and CLS. PSI evaluates these at the 75th percentile for field data; compare the reported values with these “good” thresholds:
| Metric | What it measures | Good threshold | Where to investigate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) | How quickly the main visible content appears | 2.5 seconds or less | The largest visible element and the loading path for its image or other resource |
| Interaction to Next Paint (INP) | How responsive the page is to user input | 200 milliseconds or less | Main-thread work and runtime activity associated with interactions |
| Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) | Unexpected movement of visible page elements | 0.1 or less | Content or components whose size or position changes as the page loads |
These are Google’s measurement definitions, not guarantees that a particular edit will improve a particular site. A page may have a weak lab score but acceptable field data, or the reverse; investigate the metric and evidence rather than optimizing only for a score. See Google’s PageSpeed Insights documentation and web.dev’s performance guidance.
Find whether loading, interaction, or layout is the bottleneck
Use Chrome DevTools on the same URL. The Network panel lists page resources and their load times; the Performance panel records main-thread and network activity. These views help separate slow resource delivery from work the browser must perform after resources arrive. Google’s guidance is to measure first: web.dev performance.

If LCP is poor: inspect the main visible content
Identify the largest visible element and find its request in the Network panel. Check whether the delay is in the server response, resource delivery, or the resource itself. If it is an unnecessarily large image, resize or compress it and consider a more efficient format such as WebP. If delivery is slow, investigate the hosting path or whether content offloading or a CDN would help. Do not assume every slow LCP is an image problem; the page’s report and request timing should point to the likely cause.
If INP is poor: inspect work triggered by interactions
Use the Performance panel to examine activity associated with the interaction. Look for runtime or main-thread work before changing JavaScript, themes, or plugins. INP concerns responsiveness to input, so simply compressing images or changing hosting may not address the cause.
If CLS is poor: find what changes the page geometry
Look for elements that appear late or change size or position as content loads. Investigate the affected page and its audit evidence; the metric identifies unexpected movement, but does not by itself establish which element caused it.

If the page is intermittently slow or slow before content begins
Correlate the slowdown with traffic, server load, and hosting resource limits. WordPress documentation identifies hosting and server load, software versions, theme and plugin configuration, and image count and size as factors that can affect performance. A slow server response is a reason to check capacity and configuration, not automatically to buy a larger plan.
Fix common WordPress performance problems methodically
If the site uses WordPress, begin with its built-in configuration clues: open Tools > Site Health in the dashboard and review the checks and suggested improvements. Site Health can surface configuration concerns, but it does not replace measurement of the affected page. See WordPress Site Health documentation.
- Review plugin and theme cost. Remove plugins that are no longer needed. If you suspect a plugin, selectively disable it and measure the same page to see whether performance changes; plugin count alone does not prove a cause.
- Optimize images. Reduce unnecessary image dimensions and file size, and consider WebP where it fits the site’s serving setup.
- Check versions and configuration. Review WordPress software versions, theme weight, and plugin settings alongside the page evidence.
- Check hosting limits. Review whether CPU, memory, I/O, or process limits are being reached and whether server load tracks the slowdown.
- Evaluate caching and content delivery in context. Caching can reduce repeated server work; a CDN can help deliver static assets when distance to visitors matters. Confirm compatibility with the host and consider invalidation behavior and any effects on dynamic or personalized pages.
WordPress’s performance optimization handbook covers hosting, caching, content offloading, graphics, and selectively testing plugins. Avoid enabling several overlapping optimization plugins or making broad, unexplained changes at once; those make cause and effect harder to establish.

Choose hosting, caching, or a CDN only when the evidence supports it
Compare options against the constraint shown by the measurements, not against a generic promise of speed. WordPress documentation identifies hardware capability and visitor-to-server geography as relevant factors, but it does not rank hosting or CDN providers.
| Option | Consider it when | Check before changing |
|---|---|---|
| Hosting plan or provider | Measurements or host reports point to capacity, resource limits, or server load | Available CPU, memory and I/O; process limits; server location relative to visitors; supported software and caching; management and support; traffic needs; migration arrangements |
| Cache | Repeated server work appears to be contributing to response delays | Host and platform compatibility, invalidation behavior, and whether dynamic or personalized pages need special handling |
| CDN or content offloading | Static-file delivery or visitor-to-server distance appears to be a meaningful part of the delay | Which assets it serves, compatibility with the current setup, and effects on cache behavior |
A higher-priced hosting tier matters only if capacity or hardware is the identified problem. For WordPress-specific techniques, consult the WordPress optimization handbook.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Change one likely cause, then retest
- Choose a single page, device category, and metric or audit to target.
- Make one small, reversible change tied to the evidence—for example, optimize an oversized image implicated in LCP or selectively test a plugin suspected of adding work.
- Retest the same URL under comparable conditions and compare the relevant lab result and audit. Record any functional regressions as well as performance changes.
- Check field data over time rather than expecting an immediate change in a 28-day dataset.
- Keep or revert the change based on the measured result and site behavior, then investigate the next likely cause.
Search Console’s Core Web Vitals report helps find recurring issues across groups of URLs; a live test is more appropriate when investigating one URL. Field-data status can also shift without a code change as traffic, image-serving latency, visitor devices, networks, and locations change. If multiple URLs change status, compare affected metrics and page groups before attributing the shift to a deployment. See Google Search Console’s Core Web Vitals report documentation.

For a repeatable screenshot of a page while you investigate it, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. It can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF from one request. A screenshot can help inspect what rendered, but it does not replace PageSpeed Insights, DevTools, or field metrics for diagnosing performance.
For API options and response details, see the ScreenshotNeo documentation.
Quick Recap
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month, with no card required.
Common slow-website troubleshooting mistakes
- There is no field-data panel. PSI may lack enough page-level samples and may show origin-level data or none. Use lab diagnostics for debugging; do not interpret absent field data as a passing result.
- The Lighthouse score is low, but the page seems fine to visitors. Compare the lab audits with available field metrics. They represent different evidence, and the score is not a universal measure of every visitor’s experience.
- A plugin seems suspicious. Test it selectively and compare the same page; the number of installed plugins alone does not identify the culprit.
- A speed change causes broken or stale content. Revert the last change, then retest a smaller change. For caching, inspect invalidation behavior and whether dynamic pages were cached inappropriately.
- Many URLs change status without a deployment. Compare Search Console page groups and metric values; consider traffic, image delivery, and changes in the mix of visitor devices, networks, and locations.
- The site remains slow despite image optimization. Return to the report and inspect server response, resource timing, and browser runtime activity. Image work only helps when images contribute to the measured delay.
