If your Samsung TV plays HDMI audio but shows a black screen, first press Home or Menu. If the TV menu appears, the screen can display an image, so check the selected HDMI input, connected device, cable, and port. If the menu does not appear, test the TV itself with Samsung’s Picture Test and seek service if that test also has no picture.

1. Check whether the TV can display its own menu

  1. Press Home or Menu on the Samsung remote.
  2. If the menu appears, confirm that the selected source matches the HDMI port connected to your device. Make sure the external device is powered on.
  3. If the menu does not appear, continue to the Picture Test below. A missing menu means you should not assume the HDMI cable is the cause.

Samsung notes that sound with a black screen can point to an external device, but this check helps distinguish an HDMI-source problem from a possible TV picture problem. See Samsung’s black-screen guidance.

2. Check the HDMI input and connections

  • Confirm that the TV is set to the HDMI input actually in use.
  • Check that the connected device is on and producing a video signal.
  • Unplug and firmly reconnect the HDMI cable at both the TV and the source device. Verify that each end is in the intended port.

If the TV reports “No Signal” or “Weak Signal,” these checks are especially relevant. Samsung’s error-message guidance covers source selection, device power, and secure connections.

3. Isolate the cable, TV port, and source device

Change one component at a time so you can tell which change restores the picture:

  1. Try the same device and cable in another HDMI port on the TV.
  2. Try a different HDMI cable, preferably one you know works.
  3. Connect another external device to the original TV port and cable, if available.

If another port, cable, or device works, the original component you changed is implicated. Repeat the swaps individually to narrow down whether the fault follows the source device, cable, or TV port. Samsung recommends these substitution checks in its black-screen guidance and Philippines support article.

4. Run Samsung’s HDMI cable test, if your model offers it

The test is model-dependent and Samsung says it is designed for cables shorter than 2 m; a result from a longer cable may not be reliable.

Menu labels can vary by model and software. If the test reports a cable problem, verify it with a known-working cable before replacing anything. For a 4K signal at 120 Hz, Samsung says to use a certified HDMI 2.1 cable; that requirement applies to that signal mode, not every HDMI connection. See Samsung’s picture troubleshooting guidance and error-message guidance.

5. Use Picture Test to check the TV’s display

A TV-generated test image checks picture performance without relying on the HDMI source. Samsung lists these paths for US models:

If the test image looks normal while HDMI remains black, return to the source, cable, input, and port checks. If the test image also shows a picture problem—or cannot be displayed—contact Samsung support about the TV rather than treating the HDMI cable as the established cause. Samsung’s picture troubleshooting page provides model-dependent instructions.

6. If the TV says “Mode Not Supported”

This message calls for a source-resolution check, not just generic black-screen troubleshooting. Samsung advises checking that the external device’s output resolution is supported by the TV, restarting the devices in sequence, trying a shorter cable, and setting the source to a fixed supported resolution. The available resolution options depend on the TV and source device; consult their manuals if you need to change the output setting. See Samsung’s error-message guidance.

7. Update the TV software after the basic checks

Samsung says software updates can correct bugs, but an update is not a guaranteed fix for this symptom. For US models, the listed paths are:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • 2022-and-later models: All Settings > Support > Software Update > Update Now.
  • Some older models: Settings > Support > Software Update > Update Now.

Labels and availability vary by model. Samsung includes software updates among its picture troubleshooting steps and error-message guidance.

When to contact Samsung support

  • The TV’s Picture Test indicates a TV-side picture problem, or the TV cannot show its own menu or test image.
  • The HDMI picture remains black after checking the input and connections and trying another cable, device, or port where possible.

When contacting support, note the TV model, connected device, whether the menu and Picture Test appeared, and which cable or port substitutions you tried. Those results help distinguish a TV issue from a problem with the HDMI source or connection. Samsung’s picture troubleshooting guidance describes when to escalate.
