First determine whether your Galaxy is not being offered the One UI update or whether a download or installation has already failed. A missing update is usually an availability question—Samsung and carriers release updates by model and in waves—while a failed download may point to storage, connection, or software issues.
Check the exact model, carrier, region, current software version, and error message before troubleshooting. Update menus and release timing vary by model and provider.
Check what is failing before changing settings
On the phone, open Settings > About phone > Software information to find its current software version. Note the full model number and the wording of any error. “No update available,” “insufficient storage,” an interrupted download, and an installation failure are different symptoms and call for different steps.
Samsung’s guidance is primarily for its US support pages; availability and support options can differ by market. The model, carrier, region, current build, and error message determine which release and remedy apply.

If the One UI update is not offered
A reset, repeated tapping, or a different USB cable cannot make an unreleased carrier update appear. Check release eligibility first.
- Connect to Wi-Fi and check again. Updates can be large, and many carriers require Wi-Fi for downloads.
- Confirm that the carrier has released the update for your exact model. Samsung says carriers develop and release updates, and distribution may happen in waves.
- If the phone was originally sold for a particular carrier, that carrier may still handle its updates even if the phone is now unlocked. Some SIM-unlocked devices may require the original carrier’s SIM to download an update.
- If the release is new, check again later. Samsung recommends checking every few hours while an update is distributed in waves.
- Connect to Samsung Smart Switch on a computer and see whether it offers an update. A carrier may also provide its own computer update utility.

If the download or installation fails
Start with the message shown on the phone:
Insufficient storage
Remove or move files and apps until the phone has the amount of free space it requests. Samsung does not give one universal storage figure; the device displays the space it needs.
Incomplete or interrupted download
Resume the download from the notification, following Samsung’s instructions. If downloads keep failing, try Smart Switch over USB.

Installation in progress
Do not use the phone or disconnect it during a Smart Switch update. Samsung cautions that a phone may be unusable during installation and files may be inaccessible until it finishes. See Samsung’s software-update instructions for the on-device route and its caveats.
Try the update with Smart Switch
Smart Switch is an alternative when an update is offered but repeated phone-side download attempts fail. It does not bypass carrier release eligibility. Samsung’s general instructions are on its software update support page.

- Install or open Smart Switch on a Windows PC or Mac.
- Connect the Galaxy using the cable included with the phone. Some computers may need a USB adapter.
- Allow Smart Switch to detect the phone, then select Update if that option is offered and follow the prompts.
- Keep the phone connected and do not use it while the update installs.
If Smart Switch fails to detect or update the phone, work through these checks:
- Install available operating-system updates on the computer, then restart it.
- Remove and reinstall Smart Switch.
- If the phone asks for a USB mode, choose Transferring files / Android Auto.
- Try another USB port, a known data-capable cable, or another computer. Begin with the supplied cable; a charging-only cable will not work for data transfer.
Samsung notes that Verizon phones’ USB setting for system updates is not compatible with Smart Switch and is intended for Verizon’s software upgrade assistant. A replacement cable may help only if the existing data connection is faulty; it cannot resolve storage errors or an update that the carrier has not released.

Back up data and escalate carefully
Do not treat a factory reset as an early generic fix. Back up important data before any factory data reset or emergency recovery. Samsung warns that Smart Switch emergency recovery may include a factory reset and that it is not responsible for data loss. If recovery on another computer is needed, the recovery code may be required from the computer where the update originally failed.
If the phone cannot boot normally after an update failure, Samsung’s direction is service: “If the device fails to boot normally after an update fails, service will be required to reflash the device.” Contact Samsung support or an authorized service channel for your market; available service options depend on location.
