A PHP 500 error on a parked domain is a symptom, not a diagnosis. In cPanel, first verify that the domain is still an alias for the intended primary domain, then confirm which document root or app proxy handles the request. Reproduce the error once and check the PHP error log for that domain and its active PHP handler before changing files, permissions, or settings.
1. Confirm what “parked domain” means in cPanel
In cPanel, a parked domain is an alias for the account’s primary domain, rather than necessarily a separately hosted site with its own document root. Check cPanel’s domain list and hosting configuration to verify that the domain is still intended to be an alias. cPanel’s MultiPHP Manager documentation describes its managed list in terms of non-parked domains, so an alias may not have an independent entry there.
If the domain was recently added, removed, converted to a separate domain, or pointed to another service, confirm the current configuration with your host. The error alone does not establish that any of these changes occurred.
2. Check where the request is served
For a traditional cPanel website, the server serves content from the domain’s document root and executes PHP files when requested. A deployed web app can instead cause the server to proxy requests to the app. Check the configured document root or proxy target and make sure it points to the intended site. If the parked domain aliases the primary domain, confirm that sharing the primary domain’s target is expected. cPanel explains this distinction in How Domains Serve Content.

3. Find the PHP error log for the active handler
There is no single log path that applies to every cPanel account. cPanel says PHP errors are typically recorded in an error_log file in the website’s document root. Its common example for a single-domain account is /home/$cpuser/public_html/error_log. The actual path depends on the PHP handler and account setup.
| Setup or method | Path or action | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Typical document-root log | /home/$cpuser/public_html/error_log |
cPanel’s common example for a single-domain account; your document root may differ. cPanel troubleshooting guidance. |
| PHP-FPM, domain-specific log | /home/USER/logs/DOMAIN_TLD.php.error.log |
Common PHP-FPM location; substitute the cPanel username and domain. cPanel’s PHP-FPM instructions. |
| Other paths cPanel lists | /home/$USERNAME/public_html/error_log, ./error_log, or /home/$USERNAME/logs/example_domain_com.php.error.log |
The PHP handler determines the default location. cPanel’s log-location guide. |
| Watch a known log from a shell | tail -f -n0 /home/$cpuser/public_html/error_log |
Use only if you have shell access and have confirmed this is the relevant log path. The command displays new entries as they are written. cPanel troubleshooting guidance. |
- Identify the active PHP handler for the domain, including whether it uses PHP-FPM. cPanel’s PHP Handlers documentation describes handlers as Apache components that interpret and run PHP code.
- Use the matching log location from cPanel or your host. If you cannot tell which log applies, ask your provider for the account-specific PHP error-log path.
- Reproduce the 500 error once, then inspect the log entries at that time. If the log is empty, verify that you are checking the log for the domain and handler that actually served the request.
cPanel’s “How Domains Serve Content” says, “The web server returns whatever it finds there, either directly (for example, an image) or after executing it (for example, a PHP script).” If you lack shell access, use the hosting control panel if it exposes logs, or ask your provider to identify the matching PHP and web-server entries.

4. Use the log message to choose the next check
cPanel lists memory-limit exhaustion, missing or unloaded PHP modules, coding problems, and an empty PHP file among possible causes of a blank PHP page or HTTP 500. These are possible branches, not conclusions: use the actual log entry and account configuration to decide what to investigate.
- Memory-limit message: Check which request or script triggered it and discuss the configured limit with your host before changing it.
- Missing or unloaded module: Confirm the required PHP extension is available and enabled for the active PHP version and handler.
- Syntax or other coding error: Use the file and line named in the log to inspect the relevant change or PHP code.
- Empty PHP file: Check whether the file named in the request exists and contains the expected code.
These examples and causes are described in cPanel’s PHP 500 troubleshooting article. They do not indicate which cause applies to your domain without the corresponding error entry.

5. Handle permission errors carefully
If the log reports failed to open stream: Permission denied, inspect the named file and its parent directories, along with ownership and the active PHP handler. cPanel documents an example in which PHP cannot open a required file in its article on permission-denied errors.
Do not respond by broadly loosening file permissions or enabling writable-file behavior without understanding the cause. cPanel documents handler-specific security checks, including restrictions on writable files and checks related to whether a script is within the virtual host’s document root. The correct action depends on the file named in the error and the active configuration.

6. What to give your hosting provider
If you cannot access the relevant logs or confirm the domain mapping, contact your current hosting provider. Give them the approximate time of a reproduced request and ask them to confirm:
- Which virtual host handled the request.
- The effective document root or app proxy target.
- The PHP handler and version active for the request.
- The matching PHP and web-server log entries at that time.
These details can vary by handler and hosting setup, so the provider may need to check the account’s server-side configuration.
