If a Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Con 2 will not pair wirelessly or keeps disconnecting, update and restart the console, update the controller, then reset and pair it again. Next, compare its behavior while docked and undocked. If the controller works wirelessly but is not recognized while attached, use Nintendo’s separate attachment troubleshooting instead.
First, identify which connection is failing
- It will not pair wirelessly, or repeatedly disconnects: follow the update, reset, pairing, and docked-versus-undocked checks below.
- It works wirelessly but is not recognized while attached: that is an attachment-recognition problem, not the same as wireless pairing. Follow Nintendo’s attached-controller troubleshooting.
- It will not power on or seems to run out of charge: check charging in the separate section below.
These steps are for Joy-Con 2 controllers designed for Switch 2. Original Nintendo Switch Joy-Con are a different controller family; Nintendo lists separate Joy-Con and Joy-Con 2 troubleshooting.

Update the console and Joy-Con 2
- From the HOME Menu, open System Settings, scroll to System, and select System Update. Install an available update. If the console is already up to date, restart it.
- Open System Settings > Controllers & Accessories > Update Controllers and run the controller update.
Nintendo says paired controllers are updated one at a time when more than one is paired. There is no need to look up a particular firmware number: use the console’s update check. Nintendo recommends checking updates before testing detached use in its repeated-connection troubleshooting.
Reset the controller and pair it again
- Press the SYNC button on the affected Joy-Con 2 once.
- Press another button, such as A, to pair it again.
- If you need to start pairing from the console menu, open Controllers and choose Change Grip/Order, then follow the on-screen prompt for the controller and the way you intend to hold it.
This reset-and-pair procedure is Nintendo’s recommended step for repeated disconnections. See Nintendo UK’s instructions and its wireless-response troubleshooting.

Compare docked and undocked use
Test whether the connection problem changes with the console’s position. This helps distinguish a docked-use issue from a controller problem that also occurs away from the dock.
- If the issue occurs in TV mode, test with the console docked and check that the dock is connected using an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable. Nintendo says the cable supplied with Switch 2 is Ultra High Speed.
- Remove the console from the dock and test the same controller again. Nintendo’s repeated-disconnection guidance calls for testing with the console removed from the dock.
- Compare the results. If the controller disconnects only while docked, continue with Nintendo’s dock and connection guidance rather than assuming the controller needs replacement. If it also disconnects undocked, continue with the controller steps or seek service if they do not help.
Nintendo’s Americas troubleshooting guide describes the TV-mode, cable, and undocked checks. The cable check is relevant to docked testing; it does not establish that HDMI causes every wireless disconnection.

Check charging only if there are power symptoms
If a Joy-Con 2 fails to power on or charge, Nintendo estimates that it takes approximately three-and-a-half hours to fully charge. That is an estimate, not a guaranteed charging time or battery-runtime figure. For attached controllers to charge, the console must be connected to its AC adapter and powered on or in Sleep Mode.
- Use the correct Switch 2 AC adapter and check whether the controller charges while attached under those conditions.
- If available, compare charging with the Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Con 2 Charging Grip (BEE-010). It is an alternate charging method and a diagnostic comparison, not a fix for wireless pairing or disconnection problems.
- If the controller charges in the grip but not while attached, Nintendo says the console may have an issue and may need service.
Nintendo notes that battery duration can be shorter depending on the software and functions in use. See Nintendo’s Joy-Con 2 power guidance for charging instructions.

When to contact Nintendo for service
If updating, restarting, resetting and pairing again, and the relevant dock or charging checks do not resolve the issue, follow Nintendo’s support or repair pathway. Nintendo recommends service for persistent controller or console faults; repair cost, coverage, and turnaround depend on the case and are not established here.
For an attached-recognition problem, Nintendo suggests detaching and reattaching the controller a couple of times and testing another Joy-Con 2, if one is available. If the other controller works, Nintendo says the affected controller needs repair. If no Joy-Con 2 is recognized, the console and affected controller may need repair. Use Nintendo’s attached-controller guide for that branch.
