1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf Facebook, LinkedIn, or another social network shows no image for your link, fix the page’s server-rendered metadata—not the CMS’s ordinary featured-image field. Add a publicly reachable, absolute HTTPS og:image URL to the HTML <head>, verify that the URL returns an image, remove conflicting duplicate tags, and then force the platform to scrape the page again.
Why an Open Graph image is missing
A page can have a hero image or CMS thumbnail and still produce a blank social card. Crawlers read Open Graph properties in the page source. They do not necessarily run the JavaScript that later adds metadata, and they cannot use an image that requires a login, special request headers, or a blocked cookie session.
The Open Graph protocol identifies four required properties for every page: og:title, og:type, og:image, and og:url. The og:image value is the URL representing the page or object. A missing tag, an inaccessible image, invalid markup, or a stale social-platform cache can therefore all look like “no image.”
Add a complete, server-rendered metadata block
Place the following in the deployed page’s HTML <head>, generated by your server, static-site build, or CMS template:

The four core properties are required by the protocol. The secure URL, MIME type, dimensions, and alt text are optional structured properties, but supplying them removes ambiguity for crawlers. Keep the image URL absolute and use HTTPS. Relative paths such as /images/card.jpg are less reliable when a crawler evaluates the tag outside a normal browser context.
Make the tag part of the initial response
Use “View Source” or download the deployed HTML, then search for property="og:image". Do not rely only on the browser’s live DOM inspector: a client-side framework may insert the tag after JavaScript executes, while a social crawler sees only the original response. Move generation into server-side rendering or a build-time template if the tag is absent from the source.
Diagnose the page in a fixed order
-
Inspect the actual HTML
Open the production URL’s source and find every Open Graph tag. Confirm that
og:title,og:type,og:url, andog:imageare present in the head and contain the values intended for that URL. -
Fetch the image URL directly
Copy the exact
contentvalue fromog:imageand open it in a private browser window. It must be publicly reachable over HTTPS and return the image itself, not a login page, access-denied response, redirect loop, or HTML error document. A crawler must be able to request it without authentication or custom headers.Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down

Check the HTTP response from a shell as well:
curl -I "https://example.com/assets/og-image.jpg"Look for a successful response and an image MIME type such as
image/jpeg,image/png, orimage/webp. If the response is HTML, fix the storage, rewrite rule, permissions, or CDN configuration before changing the meta tag. -
Remove duplicate declarations
Search the complete HTML for every
og:image. Themes, SEO plugins, and layout components often emit more than one. The Open Graph specification gives the first tag, from top to bottom, preference during conflicts. Remove stale declarations or place the intended image first. Put each image’s width, height, type, and alt properties immediately after that image declaration; do not attach structured properties to a different image. -
Check dimensions and crop safety
There is no single universal Open Graph canvas, but platform guidance differs. LinkedIn documents a minimum of 1200 × 627 pixels. A practical baseline for Facebook-style large previews is approximately 1200 × 630 pixels. Use a roughly 1.9:1 image, keep logos and important text away from edges, and preview the crop on the target network.
-
Ask the platform to scrape again
Social services cache previews. After deploying the correction, submit the destination URL to that service’s sharing debugger or inspector and request a fresh scrape. This step is essential when the old HTML or image remains cached. If the debugger shows the new HTML but the old picture persists, change the image URL (for example, by publishing a new filename) or use a cache-busting query string where the platform permits it.

Platform-specific checks
Facebook and Meta
Facebook reads og:image and can retain an old card aggressively. Use its Sharing Debugger to inspect the fetched tags and trigger a re-scrape after the page is fixed. Treat the debugger’s fetched values—not your browser preview—as the source of truth.
LinkedIn expects Open Graph-compliant source code and documents a 1200 × 627 pixel minimum image. Confirm that the image meets that minimum, is reachable without authentication, and is present in the initial HTML response.
X
X primarily uses Twitter Card metadata and may fall back to Open Graph tags. For a predictable large-card layout, add twitter:card and twitter:image in addition to the Open Graph block, then inspect the result with X’s current card-preview tooling.
Common failures and precise fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
No og:image in page source |
Tag is missing or injected only by JavaScript | Emit it from server-side rendering or the build template and redeploy. |
| Tag exists, but preview is blank | Image URL returns HTML, a 403/404, or a login page | Make the asset public, repair the URL or permissions, and verify the response MIME type. |
| Wrong image appears | Duplicate tags from a theme or SEO plugin | Remove duplicates; the first og:image wins. |
| Image works in a browser but not for crawlers | Bot protection, authentication, geo rules, or required headers | Allow an unauthenticated HTTPS request to the asset, or publish it on a crawler-accessible host. |
| Old image remains after deployment | Platform preview cache | Run the platform debugger/inspector and request a fresh scrape; change the asset URL if necessary. |
| Image is cropped badly | Canvas ratio or edge content conflicts with platform layout | Use about 1200 × 630 pixels, test the target card, and keep essential content within a safe central area. |
| Metadata appears correct but one network fails | Different platforms apply different image and card rules | Validate against that platform’s documented requirements and add its card-specific tags where needed. |
Validate changes before publishing
- Test the final, canonical URL, including redirects and trailing-slash behavior.
- Check the source returned to an unauthenticated client, not only a hydrated browser DOM.
- Confirm the image URL uses HTTPS, resolves without a redirect loop, and returns an image MIME type.
- Check that title, type, image, and URL describe the same page.
- Search for duplicate Open Graph declarations after all plugins and components render.
- Re-run each target network’s inspector after deployment and record the fetched image URL.
Automate a visual check of the deployed page
A screenshot of the rendered page does not replace metadata validation, but it can reveal consent overlays, broken image layouts, or a page that never finished loading. If you capture pages in a CI job, wait for the relevant selector or network idle state and test the production URL rather than a local development route.

ScreenshotNeo can capture the rendered page through one HTTP request while you investigate a social-card problem. Before the capture it accepts the cookie or consent banner like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and every response identifies the page verdict and billing status in X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. It also provides an MCP server for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients, with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools.
See the complete parameter reference in the ScreenshotNeo documentation. A direct cURL capture is:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
The same request in Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
And in Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
ScreenshotNeo supports full-page captures with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element captures, device presets and custom viewports, retina scale, dark mode, custom CSS and JavaScript, clicks, selector/delay/network-idle waits, request and resource blocking, headers, cookies, user agents, authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, chosen-TTL caching, signed links, asynchronous webhooks, PDF output, HTML/CSS-to-image, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API, and an OpenAPI specification. Parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work, which can simplify migration.

FAQ
Does a CMS featured image automatically become og:image?
No. Your theme or SEO plugin must map that asset into an Open Graph meta tag in the server-rendered head.

Can I use a relative image path?
Use an absolute HTTPS URL instead. It gives crawlers an unambiguous, publicly fetchable address.
Are the width and height tags mandatory?
No. They are optional structured properties, but declaring dimensions and MIME type helps crawlers interpret the asset and lets you document the intended card size.
Why does changing the image file sometimes do nothing?
The social service may still serve its cached preview. Re-scrape the page and, if needed, publish the replacement under a new image URL.
