A nested lookup such as data[outer][inner] can fail because either key is missing: Python first looks up outer in data, then looks up inner in the returned value. Read the traceback to identify which subscription failed, inspect that mapping and key, and choose a fix based on whether the missing entry is invalid, optional, or meant to be created.

Why does a nested dictionary lookup raise KeyError?

For a normal dictionary, square-bracket subscription raises KeyError when the requested, hashable key is absent. In data[a][b][c], Python evaluates the subscriptions from left to right. The failing key might be a, b, or c; the final key is not necessarily the problem.

Follow the traceback to the final application frame and identify the exact expression in brackets. Then split the chain into separate lookups. Check that each intermediate value is a mapping before trying the next key. For example, if data[a] exists but contains a list rather than a dictionary, the next operation may fail differently from a missing-key lookup.

How to diagnose the failing level

  1. Read the traceback. Find the last frame that points to your code and note the specific subscription that raised the exception.
  2. Inspect each level in order. For data[a][b][c], examine data, then data[a], then data[a][b]. Verify that the current value is a mapping and that it contains the next key.
  3. Print the key and nearby structure. Temporarily log repr(key), type(key), and the relevant mapping’s keys. This can expose capitalization, misspellings, leading or trailing spaces, inconsistent input normalization, or a key that was never inserted.
  4. Choose the intended behavior. Reject invalid input with a useful error, handle optional data explicitly, or initialize a new entry if creation is intended.

If the exception says TypeError: unhashable type, investigate the key expression instead. Lists, dictionaries, and sets cannot be dictionary keys; that is different from a valid key that is simply absent. The Python wiki describes the distinction in its dictionary key guidance.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Choose a fix based on what a missing key means

Approach Best for Behavior
get() or explicit checks Optional data or lookups that should not change the mapping Returns a fallback when a key is absent; does not recursively create missing dictionaries.
setdefault() Explicitly initializing a small number of missing levels Returns an existing value or stores and returns the supplied default.
defaultdict Repeated construction or accumulation with a consistent value type On a missing subscription using [], calls its factory, stores the result, and returns it.

These methods are not interchangeable: a fallback read, deliberate initialization, and automatic creation have different effects. In particular, avoid suppressing a KeyError if it would conceal malformed input or a broken assumption about the data.

Use get() for optional reads

get() can supply a fallback for an absent key, but it does not build intermediate dictionaries. Check each level or handle a missing intermediate explicitly. For example:

user = data.get("user")
settings = user.get("settings") if user is not None else None
if settings is None:
    # Handle absent user/settings according to the application's rules.
    ...

This pattern leaves the mapping unchanged. Decide whether None is a valid stored value in your data model; if it is, use membership checks or another explicit distinction so that an absent key is not confused with a present key whose value is None.

Use setdefault() when creating specific levels

setdefault(key, default) returns the value already stored at key, or inserts and returns default when the key is absent. For a structure where both levels should be dictionaries, this initializes them before assigning the leaf:

data.setdefault("user", {}).setdefault("settings", {})["theme"] = "dark"

The default type must match the expected structure. This expression is concise for a few known levels; for a larger schema, explicit steps can be easier to inspect and validate. Also avoid reusing a shared mutable default object across unrelated keys: each key that needs its own nested dictionary should get its own dictionary.

Use defaultdict for regular accumulation

For repeated grouping, a factory such as list makes each new key start with a fresh list:

from collections import defaultdict

groups = defaultdict(list)
groups[category].append(item)

A nested factory can create multiple dictionary levels:

from collections import defaultdict

def nested_dict():
    return defaultdict(nested_dict)

data = nested_dict()
data["user"]["settings"]["theme"] = "dark"

Python’s collections documentation explains that when default_factory is set, it is called without arguments for a missing key, and the returned value is inserted and returned. This automatic creation applies to subscription through [], not every lookup method: get() behaves like a normal dictionary and returns its explicit fallback, or None if none was provided.

Recursive defaultdict is convenient when arbitrary nested construction is intended. It may be a poor fit for read-only lookups, schema validation, or code where a missing path should remain visible rather than silently create empty mappings. In those cases, ordinary dictionaries with explicit checks make the data contract clearer.
