Start by checking the alert in the Home app, then restart HomePod and your modem/router. Confirm HomePod and the iPhone or iPad used to set it up are on the same preferred Wi‑Fi network, and check signal strength. A “No Internet” message does not necessarily mean the speaker is faulty; an internet outage or router setting can cause the same symptom.

1. Read the Home app alert

Open the Home app on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac, select HomePod, and read any alert before changing settings. Apple says alerts may point to a Wi‑Fi connection problem, account access trouble, or another issue. “Network Issue” and “No Internet” can mean HomePod cannot communicate with Wi‑Fi or the active home hub. See Apple’s guidance for HomePod network issues.

If Siri says, “I’m having trouble connecting to the internet,” treat it as a connectivity symptom, not proof of hardware failure. Check the internet connection and network setup before concluding the speaker needs service.

2. Restart HomePod and the modem/router

Restarting is different from resetting: it does not erase HomePod’s setup. First restart HomePod from its settings in the Home app. If that option is unavailable, unplug HomePod, wait 15 seconds, then plug it back in. Make sure the modem and router have power, and restart them as well. Apple’s restart instructions are for HomePod software version 27 or later; menu details may vary with software versions.

3. Check that HomePod and your iPhone use the same Wi‑Fi

HomePod normally uses the Wi‑Fi network connected to the iPhone or iPad used during setup. If the Home app shows a “Network Mismatch” alert, select View Details, then Move HomePod to the desired Wi‑Fi network.

If there is no mismatch alert but you need to set up HomePod on another network, Apple’s instructions are to reset HomePod, connect the iPhone or iPad to the intended Wi‑Fi, and set HomePod up again. Do this only after the simpler restart and network checks.

4. Check Wi‑Fi signal and speaker placement

In the Home app, open HomePod settings and scroll to Wi‑Fi Network. If a signal indicator is shown, Apple considers two bars or fewer a weak signal. Move HomePod closer to the router or access point and reduce possible sources of wireless interference. Apple describes this check in its HomePod network troubleshooting guidance.

The signal indicator may be absent on networks that block peer-to-peer traffic, including some captive networks. Its absence alone does not establish whether Wi‑Fi is working properly.

5. Work out whether the problem is Wi‑Fi or internet service

Check whether other devices can access the internet on the same network. If they also have trouble, inspect the modem/router’s connection status and check your internet service provider’s outage page or app. A modem/router that is powered on may still lack an internet connection.

If other devices work but HomePod cannot communicate with the home hub or other devices, the problem may be a router configuration that isolates devices or blocks peer-to-peer traffic. Ask the network administrator or internet service provider to check the router’s firewall and relevant network settings if you do not manage them yourself.

6. Ask about router settings before changing them

Apple identifies several router issues that can disrupt HomePod: multiple DHCP servers, too few available IP addresses, DNS problems, and blocked peer-to-peer traffic. DHCP assigns devices network addresses; Apple states, “Your network should only have one DHCP server.” Multiple DHCP servers can cause address conflicts, while an address pool that is too small can prevent devices from connecting or using network resources.

DNS translates domain names into IP addresses, so DNS problems can affect internet access. Do not change advanced router settings by guesswork. Ask the person who administers the network or your ISP to confirm the configuration. Apple notes that an older router that cannot assign enough IP addresses may need replacing; moving HomePod closer is a more relevant step when the issue is weak coverage.

7. If you are setting up HomePod for the first time

  • Use an iPhone or iPad: Apple says a Mac cannot set up HomePod. For HomePod (2nd generation), Apple’s cited setup guidance lists iOS 16.3 or iPadOS 16.3 as minimums. Requirements can vary by model and software version; see Apple’s HomePod setup instructions.
  • Check Wi‑Fi band names: If setup shows a 6 GHz alert, Apple says routers on the network should use the same name for each supported band—2.4, 5, or 6 GHz.
  • Complete captive-portal sign-in: Hotel and dorm networks with a sign-in page can support HomePod setup. Connect the iPhone or iPad and follow the on-screen sign-in and setup instructions. Apple says personal hotspots are not recommended for setup.

8. Reset HomePod only if the checks fail

If HomePod remains unresponsive after restarting and checking the network, use Reset HomePod in the Home app and follow Apple’s reset and setup instructions. A reset is a later recovery step, not the first response to a Wi‑Fi alert. If the problem continues after reset, contact Apple Support about service. If a flashing white light persists, Apple’s restart guidance says to unplug HomePod for 15 seconds and reconnect it; if the light continues, reset, then seek service if it remains afterward.
