First check whether the GPU is actually running out of memory, then reduce the app’s workload, verify which GPU it uses, and investigate a recent driver change before considering new hardware.
1. Identify the app and check whether memory pressure is real
Note the application or game and copy its exact error wording. Apps can use different messages for different allocation problems, and the wording alone does not tell you whether the limit concerns dedicated video memory, shared memory, or something else.
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc.
- Select Performance, then choose the GPU. Watch the overall GPU memory view while reproducing the problem.
- If Task Manager shows per-process GPU memory figures, compare them with the overall view rather than treating an individual process counter as definitive.
Microsoft documents an issue where per-process GPU memory counters can report incorrect values on affected systems. It recommends monitoring dedicated GPU memory in Task Manager’s Performance pane or using Windows Performance Recorder and Windows Performance Analyzer. Microsoft also notes that “Some GPUs do not use dedicated GPU memory.” See Microsoft’s guidance on GPU memory counters.
Dedicated GPU memory and shared system memory are different. A Microsoft Q&A answer explains that a displayed shared-memory amount may indicate what the GPU can use under pressure, rather than RAM already reserved for graphics. Treat that as community guidance, not a formal support specification: Microsoft Q&A: “How to limit the shared GPU memory?”.

2. Reduce the app’s GPU workload
Close other apps that are using the GPU, then retry. In the affected app, lower demanding graphics options such as resolution and texture quality; disable optional high-resolution texture packs or assets if the app offers them. Change one or two settings at a time and test again so you can tell whether the workload reduction made a difference.
These are practical ways to reduce demand on GPU memory, not guaranteed fixes for every error carrying this wording. If the error stops only after a particular setting is lowered, that is useful evidence that the app’s workload may exceed the available capacity in that configuration.

3. Check which GPU Windows assigns to the app
This step matters on laptops and other PCs with more than one GPU. Windows 11 lets you set a per-app graphics preference; choosing a different GPU changes which processor runs the app, but it does not add memory to either GPU.
- Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics.
- Select the app. If it is not listed, use the option to browse for and add its desktop app.
- Select Options, choose the appropriate graphics preference, then select Save. Microsoft documents the High performance preference for systems with multiple GPUs.
- Close and restart the app, then see whether the error recurs.

4. Investigate a recent graphics-driver change
If the error began soon after a display-driver update, try rolling back the driver first. If rollback is unavailable or the timing does not point to an update, use Windows to update the driver or uninstall it and restart so Windows can attempt to reinstall it.
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters, right-click the GPU, and select Properties.
- On the Driver tab, choose Roll Back Driver if that option is available, then follow the prompts.
- If rollback is unavailable, use Windows Update or the PC/GPU manufacturer’s support channel for a compatible driver. Alternatively, from the same Driver tab, select Uninstall Device, then restart Windows so it can attempt to reinstall the display driver.
Rollback may not be available if Windows has no previous driver to restore. Microsoft Support also says: “In some cases, pressing Windows logo Key + Ctrl + Shift + B to reset your graphics driver may fix your issue.” This resets the graphics driver; it is not a specific fix for GPU-memory errors. 5. Decide whether the evidence supports a GPU upgrade
Consider a graphics card with more VRAM only after you have evidence of actual GPU-memory pressure, reducing the app’s workload has not solved the problem, and the app’s published requirements indicate that the current hardware is insufficient. An error message alone is not enough to establish that buying a card will fix it. Microsoft’s documentation describes GPU allocations and residency involving local GPU memory and system memory, but does not guarantee that hardware replacement resolves every error with this wording: Microsoft’s GPU memory management documentation.
Before choosing an upgrade, compare it against the app’s requirements and your whole system. Check usable dedicated memory, power and connector requirements, physical fit, and compatibility with the PC. There is no single suitable memory capacity or graphics-card model without knowing the app and the rest of your hardware.

6. Gather details if the error persists
When escalating the issue to the app developer or PC/GPU manufacturer, include details that help distinguish a real capacity limit from an app, driver, or reporting problem:

- The app or game and the exact error wording.
- GPU model and display-driver version.
- Windows version.
- GPU memory readings from Task Manager’s Performance view while reproducing the error, plus any per-process reading that appears inconsistent.
- Whether the problem began after a driver change, and which settings or troubleshooting steps changed the result.
