If your Googlebook—Google’s official term is Chromebook—won’t connect to Wi-Fi, first check that it is joining the right network, run ChromeOS connection diagnostics, and restart the Chromebook. Test after each step. Then forget and rejoin the saved network, compare the Chromebook with another device or network, and check the router only if the evidence points there.
1. Check the network and run diagnostics
- Confirm the network: On the Chromebook, check that Wi-Fi is on and that it is trying to join the intended network, not a similarly named one.
- Run connection diagnostics: Open the Diagnostics app and use its connection checks. Google says Diagnostics is available on ChromeOS version 90 and later and can check Wi-Fi and other connection categories. See Google’s Diagnostics instructions.
- Restart the Chromebook: Restart it, try the connection again, and check whether the problem is fixed before moving to the next step.
Google recommends testing the Chromebook after each troubleshooting step, rather than making several changes at once. That makes it easier to identify what helped. Follow Google’s connection troubleshooting steps.
2. Forget the saved network and reconnect
If the Chromebook recognizes a saved network but will not reconnect, remove its stored details and join it again with the current password:
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minute- Open Settings > Network > Wi-Fi > Known networks.
- Select the affected network and choose Forget.
- Return to Wi-Fi, select that network, and enter its password to reconnect.
This refreshes the saved network information. If the Chromebook is managed by a school or workplace, policy may control network settings; ask the administrator if you cannot change them. Google documents the steps in its guide to saved networks.
#1 Best Overall
- Wifi 6 High-speed Transmission: The WiFi adapter supports the new generation of WiFi6 technology with transmission speeds of up to 600 Mbps on 5 GHz + 287 Mbps on 2.4 GHz, enabling lightning-fast transmission of video at ultra-high speed and low latency
- Dual-band Connection: The AX900 USB WiFi adapter under the AX standard, the 5G band rate can reach 600Mbps, and the 2.4G band can reach 286Mbps. Note: Use WiFi 6 Router to achieve AX900 speed
- Built-in Drivers for Windows 10/11: The WiFi Adapter for Desktop PC just supports Windows 10/11 which CPU architecture is X86/X64, supports CD-free installation, no need to download drivers, saving time and worry. Please note this Adapter doesn't support MacOS/Linux/Win 8, 8.1, 7, XP
- Receive & Transmit Two in One: A desktop computer can connect to the WiFi wireless Internet by connecting it to a wireless network card. A networked computer can connect to the network card to transmit WiFi and share it with other devices
- Stay Safe Online: The wifi dongle supports WPA-PSK, WPA2-PSK, WPA/WPA2 mixed encryption modes. Note: Make sure that the distance between the adapter and router should be within 30ft
3. Work out whether the Chromebook or network is failing
Use these comparisons before changing router settings or buying equipment:
| Test | What the result suggests | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Connect this Chromebook to a different Wi-Fi network. | If it works elsewhere, the Chromebook’s Wi-Fi can connect; investigate the original network, its saved details, or device policy. | Check the original router or ask its administrator. |
| Connect another device to the problem Wi-Fi network. | If several devices cannot connect or get online, the fault is more likely on the network side than solely on the Chromebook. | Check the router, modem, ISP, or network settings. |
| Test the Chromebook with wired Ethernet, if available. | If Ethernet works while Wi-Fi does not, the wired route can help narrow the issue to Wi-Fi or its configuration. | Continue Wi-Fi-specific checks; if Ethernet itself fails, check the cable or USB Ethernet adapter as well. |
Google recommends testing another network and a wired connection when possible. A USB Ethernet adapter is optional diagnostic equipment, not a fix for Wi-Fi; check your Chromebook’s model, ports, and connector compatibility before buying one. See Google’s connection guide.

4. Check the router if other devices also have trouble
If the Chromebook connects to other networks but multiple devices fail on the original Wi-Fi, focus on the router, modem, ISP, or network configuration. Google’s ChromeOS troubleshooting guidance includes restarting the router and modem, updating router firmware, and changing the router channel among possible network-side checks. These are options to investigate after isolating the problem—not a reason to replace the router without testing. For a managed school or workplace network, contact its administrator. See Google’s ChromeOS common-issues guide.
5. Handle hotel, school, airport, and other sign-in networks
Some public Wi-Fi networks require a browser sign-in page, called a captive portal. The device may appear connected to Wi-Fi while internet access remains unavailable until you accept terms or sign in.

If the Chromebook can connect long enough, check Settings > About ChromeOS for an available update. If the device is managed and policy blocks updates or network changes, ask the school or workplace administrator rather than trying to bypass its controls. Google explains how to update a Chromebook’s operating system.
