If your Garmin watch freezes after an update, hold its power button until it turns off—Garmin says to hold for up to 30 seconds—then release it and press the button again to restart. Garmin warns that this can erase recent step data or reset the current time. If the watch keeps rebooting, Garmin’s next recommendation is to install all available updates using Garmin Express.
Restart a frozen Garmin watch
For a watch with a physical power button, press and hold the button until the watch powers off. Garmin says this can take up to 30 seconds. Release the button, then press it again to turn the watch on. Garmin’s watch-specific instructions warn that recent step data or the current time may be lost during this restart.
If it keeps restarting after the restart
Garmin recommends ensuring that all available updates are installed, and names Garmin Express as the update route. Connect the watch to a computer and use Garmin Express to check for and apply available updates. This is a recommended troubleshooting step, not a guarantee that an update will end every reboot loop.

If the screen stays blank or the watch will not turn on
This is a different symptom from a watch that freezes but can still be restarted. Garmin’s separate wearable and Edge power-on guidance recommends connecting the device to a known power source, then holding the power button for 60 seconds. If the screen remains blank, release the button, wait 10 seconds, and try another 60-second hold. Garmin says minor recent data may be lost, but saved activities should not be affected.
That procedure comes from Garmin’s wearable/Edge guidance, which uses a fēnix 6 Standard Edition as an example; button behavior can depend on the model. Check the instructions for your exact watch before following it. Do not substitute this 60-second power-on procedure for Garmin’s up-to-30-second restart direction when the watch is frozen but otherwise responsive. Read Garmin’s power-on guidance.

Do not use handheld-device file deletion steps on a watch
Garmin has an outdoor-device troubleshooting article that discusses removing specified update files and reinstalling firmware for certain outdoor devices, including handhelds. Those instructions are not stated as watch instructions. The watch-specific guidance does not tell owners to delete firmware files, so do not connect a watch to a computer and remove files based on the handheld article. Garmin’s outdoor-device article is scoped to those devices.

When to contact Garmin
If the watch still freezes or reboots after the restart and available updates, look up support for the exact model or contact Garmin. Avoid a factory reset unless you have confirmed the model-specific reset steps and their data consequences; the watch troubleshooting article does not provide a universal reset procedure.
