If a Fortnite update is stuck or won’t download, first check whether Epic’s services are having an issue. If services are up, use the update check for your platform, then work through connection, cache, storage, and installation checks that match your symptom. Note your platform and the exact error before changing settings; the right fix depends on where the process stops.
Identify what is stuck
Record your device, the exact error text, and whether the update never appears, starts and stalls, or stops at a particular message. Also check whether other games or online services can download or connect. Those details help distinguish an update-check problem from a connection, storage, or local installation problem.

- No update appears: Use the manual update check for your platform below.
- A download starts but stalls or fails: Check service status, then investigate your connection, cache, available storage, and launcher or console state.
- PlayStation remains at “Checking for Updates”: Follow the targeted PlayStation steps below.
- You see “Cloud Download Failure”: Use the separate error-specific section; it does not mean every ordinary game update has failed.
- Your console reports insufficient space: Go directly to the storage steps.
Check whether Fortnite services are available
Check Epic Games Status and Epic’s Fortnite known-issue guidance before repeatedly restarting or reinstalling. A service-side problem may not be fixable on your device. Epic specifically lists disrupted communication with its servers as one possible reason a PlayStation can remain at “Checking for Updates.” If there is an outage, wait for service to recover and try again rather than spending time reinstalling.
Manually check for a Fortnite update
Epic provides different update steps for each platform. Menu labels can change; if your screen differs, consult the current support instructions for that platform rather than guessing.

- Gift card must be redeemed at EpicGames.com/redeem. This gift card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly on a console device (PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, etc.)

| Platform | How to check |
|---|---|
| PC | Open Epic Games Launcher and launch Fortnite. If an update is available, it should start automatically. |
| PlayStation | Open Library, select Fortnite, press Options, and choose Check for Update. |
| Xbox | Open the guide and go to My Games & Apps > See All > Games. Select Fortnite and choose Update if that option is offered. |
| Nintendo Switch | Connect to the internet, highlight Fortnite on the Home menu, press + or -, choose Software Update, then Via the Internet. |
| Mobile | Follow Epic’s Fortnite update instructions for the supported Epic Games Launcher mobile flow; Android users should follow the Google Play Store update instructions. |
These checks establish whether an update is being offered; they do not establish that your connection can complete the download. See Epic’s full platform update guide if the steps or labels do not match your device.
Fix a Fortnite update stuck on PC
For an Epic Games Launcher download that stalls or fails, start with the least disruptive checks. Epic’s PC guidance covers crashes, errors, and performance broadly, so these are documented troubleshooting steps—not guaranteed fixes for every update failure.

- Verify Fortnite’s files: In Epic Games Launcher, open Library, find Fortnite, select the three-dot menu, and choose Manage > Verify if those options are available. Let verification finish before retrying.
- Clear the launcher cache: Close Epic Games Launcher fully, clear its cache using Epic’s launcher troubleshooting instructions, then reopen it and try the update again.
- Restart the launcher and PC: Close other applications that may interfere with downloading, then restart the computer and retry.
- Check for relevant updates or permissions: Epic’s PC guidance includes updating video drivers and running the launcher as administrator. Use those steps if the simpler checks do not help.
- Escalate only if needed: Epic also lists reinstalling the launcher or Fortnite, checking for drive errors, reviewing background apps and exclusions, and trying another drive where relevant. Reinstallation takes time and bandwidth, so reserve it for after simpler checks or when the exact error points to an installation problem.
Troubleshoot connection-related download failures
If other downloads or online services also have trouble, treat the update as a possible connection issue. Epic’s connection guidance includes router restarts, DNS and cache checks, proxy settings, Windows updates, launcher download settings, and background applications. Begin with the router and device restart; make more advanced network changes only by following Epic’s instructions for your setup.
- Restart your modem or router, then retry the download.
- Review Epic’s device-specific guidance before changing DNS or proxy settings, flushing DNS, or changing launcher download-speed settings.
- Close background applications that may interfere with the connection.
- On Windows, check for system updates and follow the applicable cache and network steps in Epic’s connection troubleshooting guide.
PlayStation stuck at “Checking for Updates”
For this specific PlayStation symptom, Epic says communication with its servers may be disrupted. After checking service status, restart your modem or router and review PlayStation communication and network settings. Epic also recommends testing a LAN (wired) connection and gives manual DNS and MTU steps for this case.

- An Epic Games account is required to redeem an Epic Games Store Card code
- If playing on a console platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch or Mobile) you need to link your Epic Games account to that gaming platform (one time) to redeem your gift card code
- The 16 digit code on the back of the card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly through your gaming platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch, Mobile, etc.)
- Note: Nintendo devices do not support Fortnite Shared Wallet, so V-Bucks purchased using your account balance will not show up on your Nintendo device. However, if you purchase items in the web Item Shop — or another platform where you play Fortnite — those items will be available in your Locker across all platforms.

Use the values and instructions in Epic’s PlayStation “Checking for Updates” guidance; its DNS and MTU advice is targeted to this symptom and should not be treated as universal Fortnite settings. A wired-connection test is optional and will not resolve a server outage, insufficient storage, or a launcher installation problem.
Other console update problems
For Xbox, PlayStation, or Nintendo Switch problems beyond the specific PlayStation update-check screen, Epic’s console troubleshooting sequence includes checking the Fortnite update, installing system software updates, clearing the platform cache, power-cycling the console, and reinstalling Fortnite. Try the less disruptive checks before reinstalling, which can require another large download.

- Check for a Fortnite update using the platform steps above.
- Install any available system software update for the console.
- Clear the console’s cache using the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Fully restart or power-cycle the console, then try the update again.
- If the problem persists, consider reinstalling Fortnite. For persistent technical issues on a closed console platform, Epic advises contacting the console manufacturer’s support.
See Epic’s console troubleshooting guidance for the applicable platform steps.
Fix an insufficient-storage message
If the console says there is not enough space to install or update Fortnite, clear the console cache and remove games or apps you no longer need to free storage. Epic does not specify a universal amount of free space for this error, so use the space requirement shown by your console. If the message remains after freeing space, contact the relevant platform support team. See Epic’s console storage guidance.

Resolve “Cloud Download Failure”
Epic describes “Cloud Download Failure: Failed to Download Client Settings from the cloud” as an error retrieving client settings. It can prevent Fortnite from loading or settings from saving, so it is distinct from a routine game-update download failure.
- Check Epic Games Status.
- Clear the device cache and restart the device.
- Follow Epic’s connection troubleshooting steps, including its public DNS guidance where applicable.
- If the error continues, Epic says a corrupted settings file saved to the Epic account may be involved; submit a support request using Epic’s Cloud Download Failure guidance.
When to contact support
Contact Epic or the platform manufacturer when the same error persists after the relevant steps, or when a console problem continues after its cache, system software, restart, and storage checks. Include your platform, exact error text, where the update stops, and which troubleshooting steps you tried. For a persistent Cloud Download Failure, Epic directs players to submit a support request; for ongoing technical problems on a closed console platform, Epic points to the manufacturer’s support.
