Fix a flaky Selenium suite by finding which condition changes between runs, then addressing that cause—not by raising every timeout or adding retries. Start with the first failed command and its context. If it races a dynamic page update, wait for the specific state the next action needs; if it depends on test order, isolate its data and browser state; if it fails only in one browser or driver, compare environments before changing the test.

Why Selenium tests pass sometimes and fail at other times

“Flaky” describes inconsistent behavior, not a root cause. The Selenium Project says poor synchronization is its most common Selenium-related error, and its waiting guide identifies race conditions as a primary cause of flaky tests. A WebDriver command can run before the browser or application reaches the state the test assumes.

A page navigation reaching a browser readyState does not guarantee that JavaScript-driven content is present, visible, or ready for interaction. The application may still be adding elements or changing the interface after navigation completes. Selenium’s waiting guide explains this distinction.

Other patterns can point elsewhere: failures that depend on test order suggest shared state or incomplete cleanup, while a failure confined to one browser and driver combination warrants comparison across environments. These patterns guide diagnosis; no single exception proves one cause.

Capture the first failure before changing the test

Record enough context to make a pass on retry useful evidence rather than a lost clue. Selenium’s troubleshooting guidance discusses command logging and comparing browser behavior.

  • The test name, exact failed WebDriver command, exception, and relevant logs.
  • Browser, driver, and Selenium versions, plus whether the run was local or in CI.
  • Whether it fails when run alone, only after another test, under parallel execution, or only in a particular browser.
  • Whether the page was navigating, updating dynamically, or being acted on when the failure occurred.

Keep the original failure visible in reports even if a retry passes. A retry shows intermittency; it does not explain whether the cause was timing, state, or the environment.

Classify the failure, then choose a fix

Failure pattern Likely area to investigate First useful response
Missing or stale element around a page update Synchronization, element replacement, or locator timing Wait for the expected state or element associated with the transition before acting.
Passes alone but fails after another test, or changes with execution order Shared data, browser state, or incomplete cleanup Run it independently and give it its own setup and teardown.
Fails consistently in one browser or driver combination Browser- or driver-specific behavior, or a difference in environment Compare the same operation in another browser and capture version details.
Fails intermittently across environments without a clear pattern Potential timing race, hidden dependency, or variable external condition Preserve logs and failure context, then test one hypothesis at a time.

These are diagnostic starting points rather than one-to-one mappings from exception to cause. Selenium notes that some reported errors can originate in underlying drivers, so do not assume every failure means Selenium itself is defective.

Replace timing guesses with condition-based waits

Use an explicit wait for the condition required by the next interaction or assertion: for example, the relevant element becoming visible or a state transition completing. Selenium’s wait documentation describes explicit waits for particular conditions and warns that mixing implicit and explicit waits can produce unpredictable timeout behavior.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Identify the UI condition the next command actually needs.
  2. Wait for that condition immediately before the dependent action or assertion.
  3. Choose a timeout based on the application’s expected behavior and the suite’s constraints; Selenium does not establish one universal timeout for every application.
  4. Remove conflicting wait strategies so the test has a clear, understandable synchronization model.

A fixed sleep waits for time to pass, not for the application to be ready. Selenium’s troubleshooting guide notes that a deliberately long sleep can help test whether synchronization is involved. If you use one, treat it as a temporary diagnostic experiment, then replace it with an explicit wait for the meaningful condition. A long sleep is not a reliable finished fix: it can still be too short for a slow run and waste time on a fast one.

Remove order dependence and leaked browser state

A test should arrange the data and browser state it needs rather than relying on another test to prepare them. Give each test an independent setup and teardown, and quit its driver when the test is finished. This helps prevent one failure from changing what a later test sees and makes parallel execution easier to reason about. See Selenium’s test-isolation guidance.

  • Run a failing test alone, then after likely preceding tests, to check whether order changes its result.
  • Look for shared accounts, records, browser sessions, cookies, or other state that tests may read or change.
  • Ensure teardown runs after failures as well as passes.
  • Keep each end-to-end scenario short and discrete so a failure identifies a smaller behavior and dependency chain.

Keep browser tests for behavior that needs a browser

Browser automation is valuable when the behavior depends on a real browser, but it adds more moving parts than a lighter-level test. Move checks that do not require browser behavior to an appropriate lower layer, and reserve Selenium for the interactions that benefit from end-to-end coverage. Selenium’s test-practice guidance discusses focused end-to-end tests and test scope.

A small, focused scenario is usually easier to diagnose than a long script that performs many unrelated actions before asserting a result. Narrowing the browser portion also reduces the number of places where timing and state can interfere.

Check browser, driver, and execution environment differences

If the failure has a consistent browser-specific signature, rerun the same operation in another browser where useful and compare browser, driver, Selenium, and local-versus-CI context. Change infrastructure only when the evidence points to an environment difference; adding capacity does not remove a race inside a test.

Use retries as diagnostic evidence, not as the repair

A retry that passes confirms that the result can vary, but it does not identify why. Keep retry counts and original failures visible in reporting, and investigate the conditions around the first failure. Do not treat a passing retry as proof that the suite is reliable.

Troubleshooting common flaky-test symptoms

An element is missing immediately after navigation

Navigation completion and application readiness are different. Wait for the element or state the test needs before interacting with it. Check whether JavaScript adds or reveals the target after the page reaches its navigation readiness state.

An element becomes stale during an update

The page may have replaced the element while the test was using it. Inspect the transition and wait for the relevant updated state before finding or acting on the element again. Do not assume every stale-element failure has the same cause; use the surrounding command and logs.

The test passes alone but fails in the suite

Investigate order-dependent data and browser state. Make the test create its own prerequisites, avoid shared mutable state where possible, and ensure its driver and other resources are cleaned up.

The test fails only in CI or one browser

Record versions and execution context, then compare the same operation locally or in another browser where practical. Look for a repeatable difference before changing infrastructure or attributing the problem to Selenium.

A longer sleep or retry seems to help

That is a clue that timing or intermittency may be involved, not evidence of a durable fix. Replace the sleep with a condition-based wait once you know what state is required, and retain the first failure in reports even when a retry succeeds.

Or skip the browser setup

If the flaky work is capturing website screenshots rather than exercising an application through Selenium, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request screenshot API. It accepts a URL and returns an image or PDF; its API also supports options such as full-page captures and waiting for a selector. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. It also has an MCP server with screenshot tools for AI agents. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
