If your TCL NXTPAPER screen looks too dark, muted, or unusually warm, check the phone’s brightness and display modes before assuming the screen is faulty. The exact controls vary by model, so first identify your phone and software version; then compare settings one at a time under steady lighting.
1. Identify your TCL NXTPAPER model and software version
Open your phone’s Settings and find its device information to confirm the exact model and software version. TCL publishes separate support materials for different models, and menu names and feature availability are not guaranteed to match across the NXTPAPER range. For example, TCL provides distinct resources for the TCL 50 Pro NXTPAPER 5G and the TCL NXTPAPER 60 Ultra.
Use the manual or support page for your model when following menu instructions. The specific brightness controls below are documented in the TCL 50 XE NXTPAPER 5G manual, not verified as identical on every NXTPAPER phone.
2. Check brightness and adaptive brightness
On the TCL 50 XE NXTPAPER 5G, open Display in Settings and check both the manual brightness level and adaptive brightness. The manual describes the controls as “Adjust screen brightness manually” and “Turn on [toggle switch] to adjust screen brightness automatically.” Adaptive brightness can change the screen’s brightness automatically, so compare the display with it on and off while looking at the same content.

For a useful comparison, hold the brightness level steady when testing other display controls. If adaptive brightness is enabled, ambient-light changes may make the screen appear to brighten or dim between checks.
3. Compare NXTPAPER modes
Find the NXTPAPER controls available on your model and compare the selected mode with another available mode. TCL’s 50 XE manual describes NXTPAPER zone as reducing glare and reflections and allowing the user to choose a preferred mode. Mode names and options may differ on other phones.

Keep the same image or screen open, maintain the same brightness, and change only the NXTPAPER mode. This helps show whether a particular mode accounts for the appearance; it does not by itself diagnose a hardware problem.

Temporarily turn off Eye comfort mode and compare the same screen. TCL says this mode can reduce blue-light radiation and adjust color temperature. That adjustment may make colors look warmer or less vivid, but it is not evidence that Eye comfort is necessarily the cause of a dim or washed-out appearance.
Also check whether dark theme or a darker display mode is enabled, and compare with it off if the overall screen looks unexpectedly dark. Make one change at a time so you can tell which setting affects what you see. On Android, a community report about one NXTPAPER 60 Ultra also suggests checking Extra dim; treat that as anecdotal advice, not confirmed TCL guidance, and use the settings actually available on your phone.

Check the screen indoors or in even lighting, then adjust the viewing angle. In its review of the NXTPAPER 60 Ultra, Android Central noted that direct sunlight shining straight onto the matte screen could obstruct visibility. That observation concerns the reviewed model and unit; if the screen improves after changing the angle or lighting, the viewing conditions may be contributing to the problem.

6. Contact TCL if the display still looks wrong
If the screen remains dim or washed out after you compare brightness, display modes, and viewing conditions, consult the support page and manual for your exact model. TCL’s model-specific support materials are available for the 50 Pro NXTPAPER 5G and the NXTPAPER 60 Ultra. A report of a dark display on one 60 Ultra has also appeared in a Reddit community post, but an individual report does not establish a widespread defect or a universal fix.
The available model-specific documentation supports checking settings and seeking TCL support; it does not establish a symptom-specific repair or confirm that every persistently dim NXTPAPER screen has a hardware fault.
