If your computer seems unable to take a screenshot, first check whether it copied the image to the clipboard instead of saving a file: open Paint, Word, or another image-capable app and press Ctrl+V on Windows, or check the clipboard on your Mac or Chromebook. Windows, macOS, and ChromeOS use different shortcuts and save locations, and some apps can block captures even when the rest of the computer works. The steps below help identify whether the problem is the shortcut, keyboard, destination, or app.
Check whether the screenshot is in the clipboard
A screenshot can succeed without creating a file. On Windows, press Print Screen (also labelled PrtScn on some keyboards), open Paint or another app that accepts images, and press Ctrl+V. Microsoft says Print Screen captures the entire screen to the Clipboard. If the image appears after pasting, the capture worked; use the receiving app’s save option to make a file.
On a Mac, screenshots normally save to the desktop, but a shortcut used with Control copies the capture to the clipboard instead. On a Chromebook, Google says screenshots and recordings are automatically copied to the clipboard; inspect the clipboard and the Files app before concluding that capture failed.
Fix screenshots on Windows
Windows has separate shortcuts for a selected area, the active window, the full screen copied to the clipboard, and the full screen saved as a file. Try these in order and note whether the screen dims, a notification appears, or pasting produces an image.

If Windows+Shift+S dims the screen but you cannot find a file
That shortcut copies the image to the clipboard and opens an editing notification; it does not mean a file must already be saved. Paste into Paint or another image-capable app, or open the Snipping Tool notification and save from its editor.
If Print Screen does nothing
- Try Ctrl+V in Paint or another app; the capture may be on the clipboard.
- Try Windows logo key + Shift + S to check whether Snipping Tool can capture independently of the Print Screen key.
- Open Snipping Tool directly from the Start menu and try a capture. If the app works but the keyboard shortcuts do not, investigate the keyboard or key combination rather than assuming the capture utility is broken.
- If the built-in keyboard has no dedicated Print Screen key or cannot trigger it reliably, an optional workaround is a USB keyboard with a dedicated Print Screen/PrtScn key. This will not bypass restrictions imposed by a protected app.
If no Windows capture method responds
Test the Snipping Tool app and, if available, another keyboard. This separates a shortcut or keyboard problem from a failure in the capture utility. Also test the desktop or another ordinary window: if only one program refuses capture, the issue may be limited to that app.

Fix screenshots on a Mac
macOS uses its own shortcuts. By default, screenshots save to the desktop unless you choose a clipboard workflow or change the destination in Screenshot controls.

The Screenshot app opened by Shift+Command+5 is available in macOS Mojave 10.14 or later. Its Options menu controls the timer, save destination, floating thumbnail, and pointer visibility. To copy a Mac screenshot to the clipboard, hold Control with the shortcut, or Control-click the floating thumbnail and choose Save to Clipboard.

When the Mac shortcut appears to fail
- Look at the desktop, the default save location, before searching elsewhere.
- If you used Control with the shortcut, check the clipboard and paste into an image-capable app rather than expecting a file.
- Use Shift+Command+5 and inspect its Options for a different save destination.
- Test another window or the desktop to determine whether the issue is limited to one app.
Fix screenshots on a Chromebook
Use the Chromebook Screenshot key if your keyboard has one, or the screenshot shortcut documented for your Chromebook. Google’s Chromebook help covers screenshot and screen-recording shortcuts. After capture, inspect the clipboard and the Files app: a screenshot may be available in the clipboard, saved as a file, or both. Do not assume no capture occurred merely because you do not immediately see a new file.
Because Chromebook keyboards and shortcut details can vary, follow the shortcut guidance for your device rather than applying Windows or Mac key combinations. If the capture control responds but you cannot locate the result, check Files and the clipboard before trying another capture method.

Find out whether one app is blocking capture
If screenshots work on the desktop but fail inside one program, the operating system’s general screenshot function may be fine. Test another ordinary window and compare the result. Some apps protect their content and prevent screenshots of their windows; Apple specifically notes that some apps, such as Apple TV, may not allow screenshots. A different keyboard or shortcut is not a reliable way around an app’s content protection.

Does Print Screen always save a screenshot as a file?
No. On Windows, Microsoft documents Print Screen as copying the full-screen image to the Clipboard. Use Windows logo key + Print Screen when you want the full screen saved in Pictures/Screenshots.
