Start by checking the encoder’s connection and YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health messages at the same time. A disconnect by itself does not reveal whether the cause is weak upload, encoding overload, or a configuration problem. Use the messages to guide a change, then test the complete setup before the service.
Diagnose the disconnect before changing settings
When the stream drops, note what the encoder reports and what YouTube shows at that moment. Encoder messages about network-dropped frames point to a different line of investigation than encoding overload or a reconnect. YouTube’s stream-health information can flag bitrate, frame rate, codec, keyframe frequency, or a starved incoming video signal. Treat these indicators as clues, not as a diagnosis based only on the public stream stopping. YouTube Live stream status and health
- Network-dropped frames: investigate sustained upload performance and the local network path.
- Encoding overload: check the encoder’s workload and whether its configured output is sustainable.
- Configuration warning: correct the specific bitrate, frame-rate, codec, or keyframe issue reported.
- Incoming video starved: check whether the encoder is consistently delivering video to YouTube.
Keep a brief log of the time, encoder message, YouTube health message, and any change you make. Changing one variable at a time makes it easier to tell which adjustment helped.
Test upload capacity during the service window
Test the connection’s upload performance, not just download speed. YouTube advises choosing a quality the connection can sustain. Repeat the test at the time the service normally runs, with the church’s usual devices active, and note fluctuations. A single speed-test result cannot establish that the connection will remain stable throughout a live broadcast. YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance

Compare the connection’s repeatable real-world upload performance with the stream’s configured bitrate. Allow headroom for ordinary network overhead and variation rather than planning to use all advertised upstream capacity. The published encoder recommendations below are stream settings, not minimum internet-plan speeds or guarantees of service in India.
Match bitrate, resolution, and frame rate
If the connection cannot reliably sustain the current bitrate, reduce bitrate and, if needed, resolution or frame rate. Use the recommendation for the actual codec and format; YouTube publishes different figures for different combinations. For H.264, its current guidance includes:

| Output format | YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
These figures are YouTube Help recommendations, on a page accessed in 2026. They are not a statement about what every church connection in India can sustain. If your encoder uses a different codec, use the matching codec row in YouTube’s settings table rather than applying H.264 figures automatically. After lowering a setting, run a full test and check whether the relevant health warning clears.

Verify encoder protocol and keyframe settings
YouTube recommends RTMP or RTMPS, a supported codec, constant-bitrate encoding, and a two-second keyframe interval; keyframes should be no more than four seconds apart. Long GOP/keyframe intervals can contribute to buffering, while unsupported codecs and bitrate or frame-rate problems can trigger health warnings. Check the encoder’s actual output settings and address the warning YouTube identifies. YouTube encoder settings · YouTube Live health status details

Compare Wi-Fi with a wired connection
If the encoder is on Wi-Fi, connect the computer or encoder to the router by Ethernet for a test while keeping other settings unchanged. Compare the encoder logs and YouTube health information. A steadier wired result suggests the wireless link may be contributing; if the issue continues, keep investigating upload stability, encoder logs, and stream-health warnings. This is a diagnostic comparison, not a guaranteed fix for an ISP issue or incorrect encoder settings.
Test the whole service setup and monitor ingestion
Before the next service, test with representative audio and movement, not just a static screen. YouTube specifically advises testing with audio and movement similar to the planned stream. Check the stream’s status and health before going live, then monitor messages during the broadcast. YouTube’s Live API distinguishes stream states including active, inactive, ready, and error; an operator using a compatible encoder or integration can use those states as additional diagnostic information. If the encoder offers a backup-ingestion configuration, verify its settings and how failover is handled in that specific encoder. Do not assume that having a backup URL means the system is automatically using it.

Troubleshoot by symptom
| What you see | What to check next |
|---|---|
| Encoder reports network-dropped frames | Repeat upload tests during service hours; compare configured bitrate with sustained upload capacity; test Ethernet if currently on Wi-Fi. |
| Encoder reports encoding overload | Check encoder workload and output settings; lower the output demands if necessary, then retest. |
| YouTube flags bitrate or frame rate | Match the output to YouTube’s recommendation for the codec, resolution, and frame rate in use; confirm the warning clears in a test. |
| YouTube flags codec or keyframe interval | Use a supported codec and verify the keyframe interval against YouTube’s guidance. |
| The incoming video appears starved or the stream status is in error | Check whether the encoder is delivering consistently and review its logs alongside YouTube’s health messages. |
| It disconnects only at the church’s service time | Measure upload performance at that time with normal network activity; a test at a quieter hour may not reflect service conditions. |
What can and cannot be concluded about India
The general YouTube guidance provides encoder settings and diagnostic signals; it does not identify an India-wide cause or establish that a particular Indian ISP is responsible. The likely cause depends on the church’s location, provider, connection, encoder, and stream-health messages. If upload remains unstable after a wired test and appropriate encoder adjustments, discuss the measured service-time performance with the provider or network administrator rather than assuming a national outage or infrastructure cause.
