Use the RTMPS ingest URL and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room, confirm your FFmpeg build supports RTMPS, and connect to the exact YouTube hostname on TCP port 443. If that connection still times out, check the VPS host firewall and ask your provider about outbound restrictions. A timeout alone does not establish that Indian VPS providers generally block YouTube.
Start with the correct YouTube RTMPS endpoint
In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room for the intended stream and copy its RTMPS URL and stream key. YouTube’s official guidance says to use rtmps, rather than plain rtmp, for the secure ingest connection. Use the exact hostname and path supplied for your stream; do not substitute a hostname copied from an example or remove part of the URL. YouTube’s API guidance also requires the hostname for SNI-based server authentication. YouTube’s RTMPS guidance and LiveStreams API documentation describe these requirements.
If FFmpeg reports an SSL error with the correct RTMPS URL, YouTube advises specifying port 443. The resulting URL shape is generally rtmps://<exact-host>:443/<exact-path>/<stream-key>, but the endpoint itself must come from Live Control Room. Keep the key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to that stream.

RTMPS is RTMP carried over SSL/TLS. FFmpeg documents RTMPS as a protocol variant, but installed builds can differ in enabled libraries and configuration. Check the binary actually used by your service, not a different FFmpeg installation on your desktop:

- Run
ffmpeg -protocolson the VPS and inspect the listed protocols for RTMPS support. - Review the installed build and configuration output if the protocol list is unclear; FFmpeg’s protocol documentation describes RTMP variants and URL components.
- If RTMPS is not available in that build, install or build an FFmpeg version with the required support. Opening a firewall port cannot add a missing protocol implementation.
Use an output URL that preserves the endpoint
The following is an illustrative command shape, not a tested, ready-to-run command. Supply your actual input and encoding options, and replace the placeholders with the exact endpoint and key from Live Control Room:
ffmpeg [input and encoding options] -f flv "rtmps://<exact-host>:443/<exact-path>/<stream-key>"

Quote the URL so shell-special characters in the key are preserved. Do not paste a real key into public logs, support forums, or screenshots. If you need to share FFmpeg output with your VPS provider, redact the key first. YouTube’s current encoder settings are listed in its live encoder settings guidance; choose settings appropriate to your actual video and connection rather than treating an example command as a complete encoding configuration.
Trace a timeout from the VPS to YouTube
Once the URL and FFmpeg capability are confirmed, test the network path from the same VPS that runs the stream. Use the exact ingest hostname, not a guessed or substituted destination.

- Check that the hostname from the RTMPS URL resolves in DNS on the VPS.
- Attempt an outbound TCP connection from the VPS to that hostname on port 443. A failed connection is a reason to investigate the network path; it is not, by itself, proof of a country-wide block.
- Check the server’s local firewall and any VPS control-panel egress rules for outbound TCP 443.
- If those checks do not explain the failure, ask the VPS provider whether outbound connections to the exact YouTube ingest hostname and port are filtered, and whether it can allow the route.
- If TCP connects but FFmpeg still reports an SSL or timeout error, compare the full URL, hostname/SNI handling, TLS behavior, and detailed error output with YouTube’s RTMPS requirements. Do not disable certificate verification as a workaround.
The available platform guidance establishes the RTMPS endpoint and port requirements, but it does not establish that Indian VPS providers generally block YouTube or identify a provider responsible for this particular failure. Provider-side filtering is one possibility to confirm with your host, not a diagnosis to assume from the location of the server.
Test the stream before the church service
After the connection works, run a private or unlisted test in Live Control Room. Check the preview, stream health, audio, and video using representative movement and sound. Leave time before the service to catch a wrong key, silent input, or unstable connection. YouTube’s encoder guidance covers setup and stream-health checks.
