Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →If OBS plays the sermon’s audio but shows a black picture, first check the Media Source file, its visibility in the active scene, and whether another source is covering it. Then check the YouTube Live Control Room preview before you go live. These checks help identify whether the problem is in the OBS scene or in the outgoing stream; there is no single documented fix for every black-screen case.
Find where the picture turns black
Check the OBS preview first. If it is black there, troubleshoot the source and scene. If OBS shows the picture but the YouTube Live Control Room preview is black, the fault is farther along the output path. If the picture is visible in both previews, continue monitoring sound and video as the stream runs.
- OBS preview is black: check the source file, source visibility, and scene layering.
- Audio plays but video is black: confirm OBS is using the intended file and that the video source is not hidden or covered.
- Video plays but stalls or turns choppy: investigate performance and competing GPU use, rather than assuming the file source itself is misconfigured.
Fix a single-video Media Source
For one local sermon video, OBS’s Media Source is the direct option. OBS documents support for common formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, and WebM. Its Loop setting is off by default, so check it rather than assuming playback will repeat.
- In OBS, select the scene you intend to stream.
- In the Sources list, select the sermon’s Media Source. If there is no such source, add one and choose the intended local video file.
- Open the source’s properties and verify that Local File points to the correct sermon recording.
- Enable Loop so playback restarts when the file finishes.
- Confirm the source is visible in the Sources list and that no opaque source above it is covering the picture. If playback has ended, check the Show nothing when playback ends option; OBS documents it as on by default.
- Watch the OBS preview through playback and across the point where the video should loop.
OBS also documents Restart playback when source becomes active as on by default. If the source is activated again and starts over unexpectedly, check that option against the behavior you want; it does not replace the Loop setting.

Please note that you need to restart the OBS Studio software after the audio setup is complete, otherwise it will result in no sound output. When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
Separate a file problem from an OBS scene problem
Open the same video in a normal media player. If it is also black there, the issue may be with the file or its playback, rather than the OBS scene. If it displays normally outside OBS, return to the Media Source properties and scene: verify the selected file, source visibility, layering, and Loop setting. This is a practical isolation check, not a guarantee that every file that works in another player will work in OBS.
Use VLC Video for a playlist
If you need a playlist rather than one local video, OBS offers a VLC Video source. It requires VLC to be installed. OBS specifies that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. VLC Video’s Loop Playlist option is on by default, but check the playlist contents and setting when it does not repeat as expected.

Use VLC Video because you need playlist handling or VLC-supported media handling—not as a universal black-screen remedy. OBS does not establish that switching source types fixes every black picture.
Check performance only when the symptoms point to it
A black source and a stream that stalls under load are different problems. OBS explains that it uses GPU resources to render and composite scenes, and that GPU overload or competing GPU-heavy programs can affect performance. If video plays but the scene or output is struggling, simplify the scene and close or reduce competing GPU-heavy work. These are performance steps, not a guaranteed fix for a black local source.

Verify the outgoing picture before the service
Before starting the public stream, check the preview in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube recommends checking that preview before going live and continuing to monitor audio and video quality. If the OBS preview is correct but the Live Control Room preview is black, use that distinction to focus your next checks on the outgoing stream rather than repeatedly changing an apparently working local source. YouTube’s streaming tips provide monitoring guidance, not a diagnosis of the underlying OBS issue.
