First note whether you see a cursor, a blinking cursor, or an error code, and when the screen went dark. Then check the display and power, try Windows’ low-risk display resets, and use recovery options only when they are available. Protect important files before choosing a reset or reinstall: some recovery routes erase data.
Identify what kind of black screen you have
The next step depends on what is on the screen and when it went black. A dark display during setup is not enough by itself to establish that installation has stopped; Microsoft does not publish one universal wait time or cause for every installation-phase black screen.
- Blank screen, no cursor: Start with power, display connections, and display-output checks.
- Blank screen with a cursor: Microsoft says this can be associated with a stalled Windows process or a driver issue. If you can open Task Manager, try restarting Windows Explorer.
- Blinking cursor: This is different from a normal pointer. Microsoft notes it can mean UEFI/BIOS cannot find a boot device. See Microsoft’s blank-screen guidance for this distinction.
- Error message or stop code: Record the exact wording or code. Treat it as a crash, not simply a display problem, and follow Microsoft’s unexpected-restart and stop-code troubleshooting.
Also note whether the screen went dark while Setup was showing progress, after a restart, on the first boot, or after setup appeared to finish. That timing helps distinguish a display-output issue from a boot problem or a failed update, but it does not prove the cause by itself.
Check power and display output first
These are general Windows blank-screen checks, not guaranteed fixes for every Windows Setup screen.

- Confirm the PC is plugged in or charged. Make sure the monitor is powered on and its cable is seated at both ends.
- If you are using a laptop with an external display, disconnect the external monitor and unnecessary peripherals as a diagnostic check. For a desktop or other external monitor, try another available cable or screen before replacing anything.
- Press Windows key + Ctrl + Shift + B to reset the graphics driver. A beep or a brief screen flicker may indicate that the reset occurred.
- Press Windows key + P, press P again, then press Enter to cycle display-output modes. If the picture returns, the PC may have been sending its display to a different screen or output.
Microsoft lists these steps in its Windows blank-screen troubleshooting guide. If the screen remains black, move to recovery only if you can reach the Windows Recovery Environment.
If you can reach Task Manager, restart Windows Explorer
On a blank screen with a visible cursor, try opening Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc. If Windows Explorer appears in the process list, select it and choose Restart. If it is not listed, select File > Run new task, enter explorer.exe, and run it. This step is useful only if Windows has started far enough for Task Manager to open.

Use Safe Mode to update or roll back a display driver
If Windows Recovery Environment is available, Microsoft’s blank-screen instructions describe using Startup Settings to enter Safe Mode. The exact options available can depend on how far setup or startup has progressed.
- From Recovery Environment, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
- After the PC restarts to Startup Settings, press F5 for Safe Mode with Networking.
- In Safe Mode, open Device Manager and expand Display adapters. Use the display adapter’s driver options to update the driver. If the black-screen issue began after a driver update, choose Roll Back Driver if that option is available.
Microsoft’s blank-screen guide also describes using System Restore from recovery. Choose recovery actions carefully and review the effect on your files before proceeding.

If a stop code appears, troubleshoot the crash
A visible stop code changes the problem: the PC has reported an unexpected restart or crash rather than only a blank display. Write down the exact code and message, then use Microsoft’s stop-code troubleshooting guide. Microsoft identifies hardware, drivers, and software as possible causes, so do not assume every black screen is a graphics-driver fault.
Choose recovery with your files in mind
Back up important files if you can before using recovery or installation media. Microsoft warns that some recovery options can cause data loss. Start with the least disruptive option that fits the problem, and check what each option will keep or remove before confirming it.

Before retrying Windows 11 Setup
- Check whether Windows Update offers Windows 11 for your specific PC and confirm the device meets the requirements. Microsoft recommends waiting for the upgrade offer rather than assuming every device is ready to upgrade. See getting ready for the Windows 11 upgrade.
- Back up files before a clean installation or other recovery action that may remove them.
- For Windows Home or Pro device setup, an internet connection is required to finish setup. Microsoft says connectivity also helps provide current features, security updates, and drivers; it is setup context, not evidence that internet access fixes a black screen. Retrying the upgrade alone is not a diagnosis. First establish whether the symptom points to display output, Windows recovery, a boot-device problem, or a stop-code crash; then choose the recovery path that matches what you can actually access.
