First find where the picture turns black: in PRISM’s preview, in a captured window or desktop, in YouTube’s player, or only in the live output. Each points to a different part of the setup, and there is no single setting known to fix every case. Then identify whether PRISM is using a webpage source, a window or display capture, a local video file, or a camera/capture device.
Pinpoint where the screen goes black
Check the image at each stage before changing settings:
- YouTube’s player is black before capture: troubleshoot playback in the browser first. This is separate from PRISM’s outgoing stream.
- PRISM’s preview is black: focus on the source type and its capture or playback settings.
- PRISM’s preview looks right, but the YouTube live player is black: the problem is farther along the broadcast path. Confirm the correct PRISM scene and source are being sent, then test with a simple source such as a permitted local video file. The available official guidance does not establish one universal fix for this symptom.
- A captured app or desktop is black: check graphics-card assignment and capture method.
Make one change at a time and check the preview and live output again. That makes it easier to tell whether a setting helped.

If the video is a PRISM webpage or browser source
PRISM warns that videos and sounds on some webpages may not play normally because of technical constraints. A black or missing webpage video may therefore be a source compatibility issue, not a general failure of YouTube Live. PRISM Live Studio FAQ

- In PRISM, open the source’s settings and verify that the intended webpage and content are loaded.
- Reduce unnecessary browser sources. PRISM’s performance guidance notes that browser sources can add GPU load.
- Test the documented browser setting “Use hardware acceleration when available”. Treat it as a diagnostic check, not a guaranteed fix; the exact browser interface can vary by version.
- If the page still does not render, try a permitted local media file instead, or use another source method supported by the content owner. Do not attempt to bypass playback protections.
PRISM’s wording is specific: “Please note that videos and sounds from some webpages may not play normal due to technical constraints.”
If PRISM captures a browser window or the desktop
Window and display capture can fail when the captured app and PRISM are assigned to different graphics processors or when the capture method is unsuitable.

- Match graphics-card assignments: check that PRISM and the target browser or application use the same graphics card.
- Windows 10 version 1903 or later, Window Capture: PRISM recommends Windows Graphics Capture for this context.
- Display Capture: review the source’s capture-method options. PRISM’s guide recommends DXGI Desktop Duplication for optimal performance in its documented context.
These are capture-specific checks; they do not establish that changing capture mode will fix every webpage video or every black live output. Consult PRISM’s video capture guide for the relevant capture settings.

If the YouTube video is already black or green in the browser before PRISM captures it, test the browser’s hardware-acceleration setting. YouTube’s guidance concerns playback rendering in its player; it is not evidence that the same change fixes a PRISM broadcast. See YouTube’s green-screen troubleshooting page.

If you are playing a local video file
PRISM’s Media Source plays media stored on your device. This can help distinguish a webpage-rendering issue from a general source or output problem, provided you have permission to use the recording in your live stream.
- Choose the local file as a Media Source and confirm it appears in PRISM’s preview.
- Where practical, match the media’s resolution to the stream’s transmission resolution. A larger media file uses more CPU; hardware decoding can increase GPU use.
- Test a short, ordinary video before returning to the full program. If that works while the webpage source does not, the issue is more likely associated with webpage playback than with every PRISM source.

If the source is a camera or capture card
These checks apply to a video capture device, not directly to a browser video:
- Reseat the cable and check that the device is recognized by the operating system.
- Install or update the device’s driver if needed.
- Close other applications that may be using the camera or capture card.
- Choose a resolution and frame rate the device supports.

Check compatibility after source-specific fixes
If several source types fail, check whether the computer meets PRISM’s stated requirements. PRISM says its PC app supports DirectX 11 and lists an NVIDIA GTX 960 or equivalent as the minimum graphics requirement in its FAQ. That is a product requirement, not proof that buying a new graphics card will solve this particular black-screen problem.
