First check whether the picture is black in OBS itself or only on YouTube. If the OBS preview or a local recording is black, troubleshoot the scene and capture source before touching streaming settings. If OBS and its local recording look right, check YouTube Live Control Room and the connection carrying the stream. This split helps distinguish a capture problem from an outbound-stream problem.
1. Find where the picture disappears
- Check the active OBS scene. Make sure the scene you intend to stream is selected and that it contains the expected video source. Confirm the source is enabled and that it points to the camera, display, window, application, or game you mean to show.
- Inspect the OBS preview. If it is black there, the problem is likely in OBS, the selected source, or the operating system’s capture permissions.
- Record a short local test. Play it back before changing stream settings. YouTube recommends checking the encoder and local archive when troubleshooting a live stream (YouTube Help: Troubleshoot your live stream).
- Compare the local result with YouTube. If OBS and the recording show video but YouTube does not, move to the YouTube-side checks below.
2. Fix a black OBS preview or local recording
Display, window, or application capture
Make sure the source type matches what you want to capture. OBS’s Display Capture captures a monitor. On macOS 13 and later, OBS marks its legacy Display Capture as deprecated and points users to macOS Screen Capture. That source can capture a display, one window, or visible windows belonging to an application. Recheck the selected display or window if the source is blank.

For desktop, window, or app capture on macOS, open the OBS Studio menu and choose Review App Permissions. Enable Screen Recording. OBS’s permissions guide also lists Camera permission for webcams and capture cards, and Microphone permission for audio (OBS macOS Permissions Guide). If the image remains blank after changing permissions, confirm the source and target again and follow any prompts macOS displays; the recovery steps can vary by OS version.

Verify that the scene includes the intended camera or capture-device source, that it is enabled, and that it is the target you expect. On macOS, check OBS’s Camera permission for webcams or capture cards. Make a brief local recording after correcting the source so you know whether video is present before it is sent to YouTube.

Game Capture in a podcast scene
Use this branch only if the black source is actually capturing a game. OBS’s Game Capture troubleshooting guide says some games may require running OBS as administrator. Overlay or FPS-counter software can conflict with capture; for some games OBS recommends windowed or borderless mode and Window Capture instead. On laptops and all-in-one computers with multiple GPUs, OBS advises ensuring OBS and the game use the high-performance GPU. These are game-specific checks, not general fixes for a black webcam or monitor source.
3. Check YouTube when OBS looks correct
If the OBS preview and local recording both show the podcast video, inspect YouTube’s Live Control Room preview and any displayed errors. Confirm the encoder output and check the local archive; then test the outbound internet connection if the encoder output appears healthy. YouTube separates encoder or source issues from outbound connection problems in its live-stream troubleshooting guidance.

Do not treat a bitrate change as a universal black-screen fix. A black capture source, an overloaded computer, and a transmission problem are different symptoms. Adjusting bitrate alone does not repair the wrong source or a missing OS permission.

If the scene is choppy, unstable, or failing to render rather than showing a steady black source, check whether OBS is overloaded. OBS needs GPU resources to compose and render scenes; its encoding performance troubleshooting guide recommends freeing resources when overloaded. Simplifying demanding sources or reducing output resolution or frame rate can lower the rendering load. These measures address performance problems; they are not the default fix for a static black camera or display.

5. Run a test before the podcast starts
- Start a private or unlisted test stream before the scheduled show.
- Confirm the picture in the OBS preview and in a short local recording.
- Check the Live Control Room preview and the YouTube watch page before making the podcast public.
- Monitor audio and video quality during the test. YouTube recommends testing the stream and checking the Live Control Room preview before going live (troubleshooting guidance; YouTube live-stream tips).
YouTube’s computer live-stream tips note: “You do not need expensive equipment, what you have at hand will do.” That is a reason to diagnose and test your current setup before buying gear—not a guarantee that every device will work (YouTube Help: YouTube live streaming tips – Computer).
6. Common black-screen symptoms and fixes
