If a 24/7 story livestream starts over after a crash, first identify what actually failed: OBS may have lost its connection, the OBS app or computer may have stopped, the media source may have restarted, or YouTube may have ended the live event. Each needs a different fix. OBS’s automatic reconnect addresses an output connection interruption; looping repeats media but does not, by itself, restore the exact story item and timestamp after an OBS crash.
Identify what restarted
Before changing settings, check OBS and YouTube Studio. Is OBS still open? Does it show an output reconnecting? Is the story source playing from the beginning while the stream remains live? Does Studio show the broadcast as ended? These clues separate four failure layers:

Note the story or playlist item and approximate playback position before reproducing the issue. That gives you a clear test for whether a fix restores the right point, rather than merely bringing the stream back online.

Fix a connection interruption while OBS is still open
OBS’s automatic reconnect is for a lost streaming output connection. It does not relaunch OBS if the process has crashed. Enable the automatic reconnect option in OBS’s Advanced settings, then test it with a brief, controlled connection interruption. The exact menu labels may differ by OBS version. OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide also recommends testing stream settings before relying on them.

If interruptions recur, check OBS’s dropped-frame indicators and investigate whether the connection is stable enough for the selected bitrate. OBS lists network instability, bitrate exceeding available capacity, VPN or security software, and network hardware among possible causes. See OBS’s dropped-frames and connection-issues guide. Reduce bitrate if the connection cannot sustain it; changing the story loop will not fix a network problem.
Recover when OBS crashes or the computer reboots
OBS cannot reconnect itself if it is no longer running. Use a separate process supervisor or an operating-system startup task to relaunch it. Treat that as one part of recovery: launching OBS, starting its stream output, keeping the same YouTube event active, and restoring the story’s playback position are separate jobs.

- Choose the startup state deliberately. OBS command-line options include
--startstreamingand options for selecting a scene collection, profile, and scene. Use the intended configuration rather than assuming the last-used one is correct. Refer to the OBS launch parameters guide. - Set the automated launch context. For scheduled or automated Windows launches, OBS’s guide says to set the working directory as required. Test the task under the account and startup conditions that will actually be used.
- Verify the platform event separately. After OBS returns, open YouTube Studio and inspect the event’s current status. Automatic start/stop options or reusable stream credentials do not prove that a particular earlier event is still live. YouTube’s documentation does not specify one universal crash-recovery window.
- Test playback continuity. Confirm which story item and time are playing. A successful OBS launch and output connection do not establish that the source resumed where it stopped.
YouTube’s Live Streaming API documentation describes event state, automatic start and stop, recording, and archive settings; it does not describe restoring the local OBS or VLC playback cursor after a process crash.

In OBS, verify that the story files still exist at their configured paths after a restart, the intended source is present in the active scene, and its visibility and playback controls match your plan. OBS’s Media Source documentation describes Loop as replaying a file after playback completes and Restart playback when source becomes active as starting playback when the source becomes current and visible. For a VLC Video source, OBS documents a Loop Playlist control.

Those controls govern looping or starting playback; they are not documentation of a saved playlist cursor and timestamp that survive an OBS process crash. If you need the narrative to resume at the precise story and time, use a player or workflow that explicitly saves and restores that state. The OBS Media Sources documentation, dated January 11, 2022, does not promise crash-time position checkpointing. Verify your chosen workflow with a controlled restart on your installed OBS and VLC versions.
Understand what YouTube DVR can and cannot do
YouTube DVR gives viewers controls to pause, rewind, and resume during a live stream. It is viewer playback control, not a checkpoint for the broadcaster’s local media source. YouTube says very long streams have rewind limits and viewers cannot seek to before the stream began. See YouTube Help’s live-stream DVR information. A viewer’s ability to rewind therefore cannot make OBS pick up a story file at its previous position.

Test each failure mode on its own
Do not assume one successful reconnect proves the whole setup recovers correctly. Test the failure types you expect to encounter, ideally when an interruption will not disrupt an important broadcast:

- Restart the OBS process and check whether the intended profile, scene collection, and scene load, whether output starts, and where the story resumes.
- If relevant, reboot the host and repeat those checks, including whether media paths remain available.
- For each test, record whether the same YouTube event remains live, which story item plays, and the approximate playback time.
OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide recommends testing stream settings before relying on them. A separate controlled restart is useful for checking the media-position behavior, which connection testing alone cannot establish.
