If your YouTube cartoon livestream has video but no sound, first check whether the audio source is reaching your streaming software. In OBS, make sure the relevant source is unmuted and its mixer meter moves while the cartoon plays. Then compare the stream with a local recording: that helps distinguish a source or capture problem from an output or YouTube-side issue. Silence alone does not establish a copyright problem or faulty hardware.
1. Rule out a muted viewer
Before changing the stream setup, check playback at the viewer’s end:
- Make sure the YouTube player is not muted and its volume is up.
- Try the stream on another device or browser, or ask another viewer to check.
If sound works elsewhere, the problem may be local to the original playback device rather than the broadcast.

2. Check the audio source in OBS
If you use OBS, find the source or input that carries the cartoon’s audio. The exact source and routing depend on how the video is played and on your OBS version.

- Open the OBS Audio Mixer and identify the relevant source.
- Confirm its mute control is off.
- Play a segment where sound should be audible and watch the meter. OBS documents the mixer’s mute control and meter behavior in its Audio Mixer Guide.
If the meter does not move, the stream software may not be receiving sound. Check that the cartoon is playing with audio, that OBS has the correct source or input selected, and that the audio is routed to that source. If the meter does move, OBS is detecting audio at that point in the chain; continue by checking the output.
3. Compare the stream with a local recording
When available, make a short local recording using the same OBS setup and play it back. This is a diagnostic comparison, not proof of a specific cause:

- No sound in the recording, and no meter activity: investigate playback, source selection, capture, and routing.
- The meter moves, but the recording has no sound: inspect the recording or output configuration and which audio sources it includes.
- The recording has sound, but viewers hear none on YouTube: focus on the streaming output and YouTube Studio status.
If you use an encoder other than OBS, check its equivalent input, mute, audio-output, and local-recording controls. Labels and routing differ by software and version. Restream’s guide to an encoder stream with no audio offers general checks; it does not identify the cause of your particular silence.

5. Treat copyright as a possibility only if the evidence points to it
YouTube says that “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” If identified content remains in a live stream, YouTube may temporarily interrupt or terminate it. YouTube also says Content ID claims on archived live streams are made after the stream ends. These policies make a relevant Studio notice worth checking, but they do not show that copyright detection caused a silent stream. See YouTube’s current guidance on copyright issues with live streams and follow the notice shown for your stream.
6. Check hardware only when the checks lead there
If the source meter stays inactive, first verify that the source itself is playing audio and that the intended input is selected. If the setup uses a connected input device or audio interface, check that it is functioning and that the software is receiving its signal. A silent stream by itself is not evidence that a cable, interface, mixer, headphones, or other device needs replacing.
