To fit a portrait devotional video in an OBS-powered YouTube stream, preserve its proportions: make a vertical composition for a vertical stream, or place the portrait video inside a landscape scene with a deliberate background. Do not stretch it to fill the frame. If you want both vertical and horizontal viewers, set up both layouts in YouTube Live Control Room before starting and check the vertical preview.
Choose the stream format first
Decide whether you want one vertical stream or both vertical and horizontal versions. The choice affects the composition, cropping and setup.
One vertical stream
Build the OBS scene around the portrait video and preserve its aspect ratio. Use a vertical canvas and output format only if your encoder and YouTube stream setup accept that format. YouTube describes vertical live streams as a full-screen mobile experience, and says viewers browsing Shorts may find them; that is a feature description, not a guarantee of reach. Check the vertical preview in YouTube Studio before going live.
Vertical and horizontal versions
YouTube’s Live Control Room supports layouts for both orientations. Its default vertical result is a center crop of the horizontal stream, but you can adjust the vertical layout. With an external encoder such as OBS, choose Encoder in the vertical preview, use RTMP(S), select a second stream key for the vertical output, and send the matching format to each key. Set this up before going live: YouTube says a vertical format cannot be added after the stream has started.

Fit the devotional video without distorting it
A portrait video and a landscape canvas have different aspect ratios. You have three sensible choices: show the complete portrait image with unused space around it, crop part of the image to fill the frame, or design the rest of the scene to use the available space. Stretching is not a fourth good option: it warps faces, lettering and religious imagery.

If the video is portrait and the stream is landscape
- Keep the video’s proportions and position it in the scene without enlarging it until its sides are cut off.
- Use the remaining space intentionally—for example, with a restrained background or another appropriate scene element—if that fits the presentation.
- Check that prayer text, captions and the devotional focal point remain legible at the size viewers will see.
If the video is landscape and the stream is vertical
- A center crop fills the phone-oriented frame but can remove content at the left and right edges.
- Adjust the vertical zoom and position in YouTube’s layout preview to keep the central subject visible.
- If preserving the full width matters more than filling the frame, choose a fit-style layout and accept the unused space it may leave.
OBS’s Aspect Ratio Guide explains the trade-off: stretching mismatched content distorts it, while enlarging it to fill the frame crops the source. Fitting the whole image preserves it but may leave unused space.

Set up and preview the layout in YouTube
- Confirm live access. YouTube’s live-streaming guidance says the channel must be verified, must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the prior 90 days, and the streamer must be at least 16. Confirm your account’s access in YouTube Studio; the reviewed instructions do not specify a different procedure for India.
- Prepare the stream in YouTube Studio. Schedule or set up the live stream, then open the vertical preview and choose the layout that matches your intended composition. YouTube’s documented choices include Center crop, Fit to phone width and Stacked.
- Compose for the crop. Adjust zoom and position where available. Keep important devotional imagery, faces and any embedded prayer text away from areas that the crop may remove.
- For two orientations through OBS, configure both outputs. In the vertical preview, select Encoder, use RTMP(S), choose the second vertical stream key, and make sure each key receives its matching format. Follow the current YouTube Studio prompts for the exact stream details.
- Inspect both previews before going live. Verify that the video is not stretched, the focal point is visible, and text is readable in the vertical and horizontal versions you intend to send. You can adjust a layout through the canvas while live, but YouTube says you cannot add the vertical format after the stream has begun.
OBS is free software with no watermark or commercial-use limitation, according to the OBS Project’s Help Portal. The layout problem itself does not require a capture card or a paid OBS feature.

Which YouTube layout should you use?

What changes for viewers of vertical live streams?
YouTube’s feature comparison says vertical live feeds can be discovered in the Shorts feed, while horizontal streams are not; vertical viewers also get a scrollable live feed. It lists clickable links in chat and channel descriptions, live ad midrolls and pre-rolls, Premieres, and Live Redirect as horizontal-only features, while memberships and gifted memberships are listed for both. Availability can depend on eligibility and current YouTube behavior.
For a stream sent in both formats, YouTube says subscribers receive one go-live notification with a shared stream URL; vertical-feed viewers see the vertical version, other viewers see the horizontal version, and both versions share the same live chat. Live Control Room shows combined metrics; vertical-only metrics become available 24 hours after the stream.
