To finish a Firefox run reliably, use Playwright’s bundled, patched Firefox binary; register the stealth plugin on Playwright’s Firefox instance before launching or navigating; and wait for an application-specific readiness signal instead of an arbitrary network event. The popular puppeteer-extra-plugin-stealth package is optimized for Chromium, so disable or replace evasions that assume Chrome versions, APIs, or identity strings. Add explicit timeouts, diagnostics, and finally-block cleanup so a timeout is observable and never leaves Firefox processes behind.
The supported execution pattern
Firefox stealth is an integration problem, not a single switch. A run can fail because the wrong browser binary was used, a plugin hook was registered too late, an evasion parsed a Firefox value as if it were Chrome, or the page never reached the wait condition you selected.
Install the browser and integration
Install Playwright, download its managed browsers, and install the Playwright-compatible wrapper you intend to use. The following commands illustrate the common playwright-extra integration:

npx playwright install firefoxUse the exact package names and import style documented by the integration you choose. Some wrappers, including @mr_ozio/playwright-stealth, expose their own initialization and page-hook behavior; do not assume that a Puppeteer example can be copied unchanged.

Use the bundled Firefox build
Playwright’s Firefox build contains patches that Playwright expects. Microsoft’s Playwright documentation states that branded, consumer-installed Firefox is unsupported because Playwright relies on those patches. Unless you have verified a specific supported path, do not pass a system executable through executablePath. A system binary can produce different protocol behavior, preferences, and detection signals from the managed build.
A runnable JavaScript baseline
This pattern registers the plugin before launch, creates the context and page only after launch, navigates after initialization, and closes resources even when navigation or assertions fail.

}The selector in the example is deliberately application-specific. If the target has no such marker, choose one of the readiness strategies below rather than waiting forever for an event the site does not emit.
Why plugin ordering changes the result
playwright-extra exposes browser-specific instances. Register the plugin on firefox before firefox.launch(). Create contexts and pages only after launch, then navigate only after the integration has installed its hooks. Registering after a page has already navigated cannot retroactively alter requests, page creation, or initialization code.

Wrappers that document page-level hooks may require an explicit readiness step before the first navigation. Follow that wrapper’s current API; the important invariant is that every hook needed for the initial document is active before page.goto().
Firefox-specific stealth risks
Stealth packages commonly contain independent evasions. A plugin can attach successfully to Firefox while one of those evasions still assumes Chromium. Treat each evasion as code that must be compatible with the browser engine, not as a guarantee that the whole bundle is portable.

The playwright-extra documentation describes the widely used stealth plugin as optimized for Chromium-based browsers. Firefox compatibility therefore has to be established per evasion and per target site.
Define what “finished” means
A navigation promise resolving does not necessarily mean that a single-page application is usable, a download has completed, or a challenge has passed. Select a wait condition that represents the outcome you actually need.

Always bound each wait with a timeout. A page can continue making background requests indefinitely, so “wait for network idle” is not a universal completion test.
Instrumentation that makes a failed run diagnosable
Capture evidence at the first failing event, not only after the final timeout.
- Log Playwright, Node.js, the stealth integration, and browser versions.
- Record the URL, headless or headful mode, launch options, enabled evasions, timeout values, and whether a persistent profile was used.
- Listen for
console,pageerror, request failures, and browser disconnection events. - Save a screenshot and HTML when the readiness check fails.
- Enable a Playwright trace for a reproducible diagnostic run, then inspect the action timeline, network activity, and page snapshot.

Add a persistent profile only when the workflow genuinely requires stored cookies or local state; profiles introduce another variable, including extensions, stale storage, and service-worker state.

Change one axis at a time and keep the URL, account state, timeout, and network conditions constant.

- Run the flow in Playwright Firefox with the managed binary and no stealth plugin.
- Run the same flow with the plugin enabled and its full default set.
- Disable one suspected evasion, especially any user-agent or browser-version override, and repeat.
- Compare Firefox with Playwright Chromium to separate an engine issue from a general automation issue.
- Compare headless and headful modes. A difference is a diagnostic clue, not proof that one mode is universally safer.
- Compare a clean context with a persistent profile only after the basic flow is stable.
- Repeat from a different network or IP when the target may be applying reputation or rate controls.
Keep the first event that diverges: a launch error, a failed request, a console exception, a challenge page, a missing selector, or a timeout. This is more useful than labeling the entire run “stealth failed.”

Firefox launches, but the first navigation fails
Confirm that npx playwright install firefox completed and that the script is not supplying a branded Firefox executable. Check the launch log for executable-path overrides and run once without the plugin. If the unmodified Firefox flow works, re-enable evasions incrementally.
An evasion throws a version-parsing error
A documented Firefox issue involved a user-agent override attempting to parse “Firefox Headless” as a Chrome-style version. Disable that specific evasion or use an integration version that handles Firefox correctly. Do not “fix” the error by replacing Firefox’s identity with a fabricated Chrome identity.
The script waits until timeout although the page is visible
Inspect the selector and frame in which the application rendered. Replace a broad network-idle wait with a visible, stable application marker, and log the page URL, title, body text, and failed requests at timeout. A page that is visually complete may still have long-polling or analytics requests.

A download never completes
Wait for the download event rather than navigation, and save the returned file before closing the context. If the flow fails only with stealth enabled, reduce evasions and inspect the browser-version and user-agent overrides first.
A Cloudflare or similar challenge still blocks the run
There is no universal Firefox pass. One issue report described repeated Cloudflare failures with Playwright plus stealth while the reporter said Puppeteer plus stealth worked under comparable headful conditions; that report is anecdotal and does not isolate the cause. Compare browser engine, mode, binary, network, cookies, and enabled evasions, and treat the result as site-specific.
Firefox processes remain after an exception
Put context and browser closure in finally, as in the baseline. If a launch fails before browser exists, guard the cleanup; if a context closes unexpectedly, still attempt browser closure and record the original error.
What stealth can—and cannot—promise
Stealth reduces commonly observed automation signals; it does not make every Firefox run indistinguishable from a human browser. The stealth project describes detection as an ongoing cat-and-mouse problem and does not promise universal undetectability. Report results with their conditions: browser build, headless state, plugin and evasion list, target URL, network, date, and detector behavior. No authoritative Firefox success-rate percentage is established here, so do not publish one without a controlled, dated benchmark.
