YouTube can track progress for a formal Course, but an ordinary playlist may not offer the same completion panel. That distinction matters when a course runs to dozens of lectures: the platform may help you see what remains, while your own definition of “finished” still depends on how you use each lesson.
First, is it a YouTube Course or just a playlist?
YouTube calls its formal Courses “in-depth, structured learning experiences.” A Course can include progress tracking, quizzes, course comments, and a completion badge that appears in your library after you finish all its videos. These features are specific to YouTube’s Courses product; a long playlist is not automatically a Course. YouTube Help: Take a course on YouTube
Check the course’s page and progress panel before choosing a tracking method. If YouTube identifies it as a Course, the panel shows completed and remaining videos. For ordinary playlists, YouTube lets viewers create and manage playlists and reorder videos, though some actions vary by device and content type. YouTube Help: Create and manage playlists on Android
What YouTube counts as complete
For a formal YouTube Course, a video counts as complete when you watch at least 80% of it, according to YouTube’s guidance. That threshold is a platform progress rule, not proof that you understood or retained the lesson—and it should not be applied to every ordinary playlist. YouTube Help: Take a course on YouTube

Decide what “finished” means for your goal. If you only need to complete the platform’s Course, its progress panel supplies the relevant threshold. If you are learning a skill, you may want to add a separate check—such as completing the lesson’s exercise or writing down one usable takeaway—rather than treating the progress indicator as a measure of mastery.
How to keep a long course moving
- Confirm the format. Open the course or playlist and check whether YouTube presents it as a Course with a progress panel. Don’t assume a playlist has Course tracking.
- Choose a completion rule. For a formal Course, YouTube marks a video complete at 80% watched. For a playlist or a learning goal beyond viewing, set your own rule and apply it consistently.
- Record the next action. After each session, note the next lecture to watch and, if useful, one action to take from the lesson. This reduces the friction of restarting without requiring a separate system for every detail.
- Use the platform’s organization tools where they fit. Playlist management and reordering can help with regular playlists. A formal Course’s progress panel can show what is completed and what remains.
What a progress tool can—and cannot—solve
A tracking tool is useful only if it addresses a gap in the course format or the learner’s workflow. YouTube’s Course panel covers viewing progress for formal Courses. A separate tracker may be relevant if you need to manage an ordinary playlist, capture notes or tasks, or follow a personal completion rule—but those are possible needs, not features established for any particular tool.

The title’s tool is not identified here, so its name, features, availability, limitations, and exact role in the author’s workflow cannot be stated. Don’t infer that it automatically imports playlist data, stores notes, or is available for others to use. To evaluate a specific tracker, check whether it supports your course format, what information it records, how much upkeep it takes, and whether you can access it.

Creators can make eligible playlists into Courses. YouTube’s creator guidance says a Course must actively teach, be accessible to all ages, and contain at least three videos; creators may also attach PDFs such as worksheets or study guides to course videos. Those are creator-side options, not features every viewer can add to a playlist. YouTube Help: Create a course in YouTube Studio
