You can find songs that coincide with audience drops by comparing YouTube’s time-based audience data with a timestamped track log. YouTube does not identify which song was playing when viewers left or prove that a song caused them to leave, so treat a match as a lead to investigate—not a conclusion.
What YouTube analytics can—and cannot—tell you
YouTube Studio provides audience-retention data for a livestream’s video, and the YouTube Analytics API reports retention by video segment. The API also offers a separate report for concurrent viewers by stream position. These reports can help you locate when viewing declined; matching that time to a song requires your own playback log.
YouTube’s documentation does not describe an automatic song-attribution feature or a report that establishes why viewers left. A drop during a track is correlation, not proof of cause. Other events—such as a transition, visual change, interruption, or shift in audience and time of day—may also explain a change.

- Open the ended livestream in YouTube Studio. Go to the video-level Analytics for that stream and review audience retention and its key moments. YouTube lists watch time, demographics, playback locations, traffic sources, and devices among its Watch Time reports. See YouTube’s guide to live-stream metrics.
- Look for sustained declines. Note the elapsed video time of a meaningful downward trend rather than treating one noisy point as evidence. If you also have a timestamped concurrent-viewer record, note sustained changes there too.
- Keep the measurement context consistent. YouTube says Analytics data is based on Video ID and is processed differently from Live Control Room data, which provides real-time analytics. Post-stream Analytics becomes available after the stream ends. Compare the same stream, report, and time window rather than mixing metrics from different views.
- Account for a dual-format broadcast if relevant. YouTube’s documentation says metrics for just the vertical stream can be selected after the stream has ended at least 24 hours earlier. That timing note applies to the vertical-only workflow described on the live-stream metrics page.
Use the Analytics API for repeatable time-based checks
If you want to process reports repeatedly or compare many candidate times, the YouTube Analytics API provides a data-oriented route. Its audience-retention report requires a single video filter and uses elapsed video time as the position dimension. It includes stoppedWatching by video segment. A separate livestream concurrent-viewers report breaks viewers down by stream position, generally at one-minute positions.

Read the API’s channel reports and its documentation for dimensions before building a report. Keep activity during the broadcast separate from activity outside it: API reporting distinguishes LIVE from ON_DEMAND. An archived stream can continue to receive on-demand views, which should not be mistaken for live audience behavior.
Match drops to the track that was playing
- Make a track log. Record each track’s start time against the same stream timeline used by the audience report. If the playlist or automation system already records track starts, use that log; otherwise, maintain one during playback.
- Put both records on the same time basis. Studio retention uses elapsed video time; API reports use video segment or stream position. Convert the candidate drop time to the track log’s timeline, accounting for any offset between the stream start and the recording or log.
- Identify the track at each candidate time. Find the latest track start at or before the drop time, then check whether the next track had already begun. If a drop falls at a transition, mark it as a transition rather than assigning it confidently to one song.
- Compare repeated appearances. Check whether similar declines occur when the same track appears again, and whether other tracks in similar positions show the same pattern.
- Test a measured change. If a decline repeatedly follows a track under comparable conditions, try changing its placement or replacing it, then compare subsequent comparable periods. A single coincident dip is not enough to claim the song caused viewers to leave.
How to interpret the result
- A useful lead: similar audience declines occur near the same song across repeated, comparable periods.
- An ambiguous result: the decline overlaps a track transition, stream interruption, visual change, or a change in audience or time of day.
- Not established: the song itself caused departures. YouTube’s cited audience reports measure viewing and timing; they do not identify the song or viewers’ reasons for leaving.
Use the data to decide what to test next, not to label a track as harmful based on one event. YouTube’s explanation that “Data in YouTube Analytics is based on Video ID” also helps clarify why the video-level report and real-time Live Control Room figures may not match exactly.
