If Windows says an external hard drive is in use when you try to eject it, use Microsoft Sysinternals Process Explorer to search for the drive letter or a file-path fragment and identify the process holding an open handle. The command-line utility Handle can do the same kind of search, but requires administrator privileges. Task Manager can show general disk activity; it does not establish which process has a particular file open.
Before searching, let current work finish
Wait for file copies, backups, playback, or other activity involving the drive to finish. Close File Explorer windows displaying it, along with any applications that may have opened files from it. These are sensible first checks, not proof that any particular app is responsible. If Windows still will not eject the drive, look for an open handle.
What each Windows tool can tell you

Use Process Explorer to find the process

Download Process Explorer from Microsoft Sysinternals. The documentation lists Process Explorer v17.14, published September 10, 2026, and Windows 11 and higher for client support; check the page for current version and compatibility details.

Open Process Explorer and use its search feature to look for the drive’s current letter, such as
E:, or a distinctive part of the file path or name. Drive letters can change, so use the one currently assigned to your external drive.#1 Best Overall

Review the matching result to identify the process that has the handle open. Process Explorer’s documentation describes searching for which processes have particular handles open.

Switch to the identified application and close the relevant file or exit the application normally. Then retry ejecting the drive. Avoid ending a process you do not recognize before you understand what it is doing.

Search with Handle from the command line
Microsoft Sysinternals Handle is an alternative for readers comfortable with a terminal. Run it with administrator privileges and search for a distinctive name or path fragment associated with the drive. See the Handle documentation for its current syntax and options; the documentation lists version 5.0, published October 26, 2022.

Use the matching process name and PID to locate the owning application, then close the relevant file or application normally. Microsoft warns: “Closing handles can cause application or system instability.” Do not use Handle’s close-handle option as a routine way to release the drive.

Use Task Manager only as a general activity check
Task Manager can help you spot processes doing disk work through its process and resource views. That is a broad activity signal, not confirmation that a process has a specific file open on your external drive. For the file-or-handle question, use Process Explorer or Handle. Microsoft describes Task Manager among the system configuration tools in Windows.

Finish the file operation and close the application or file identified by your search.

In the Windows system tray, select Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media, then choose the correct external drive. Microsoft also documents a Settings route under Bluetooth & devices > Devices.

Wait for Windows to confirm that the drive is safe to remove before disconnecting it. Microsoft’s guidance covers Windows 11 and Windows 10; it notes that Windows 10 support ended October 14, 2025.
