You do not need to play a game before watching its adaptation. Start with the kinds of stories you already enjoy, then check whether the screen version introduces its characters and stakes clearly. The Last of Us, Fallout, and Arcane offer very different entry points; the right one depends more on your taste than on your gaming history.
Choose by the kind of show or film you want
“Based on a game” describes a source, not a viewing experience. Adaptations can be bleak character dramas, dark comedies, animation, family adventures, or tightly controlled horror. Use genre and tone as your first filter, especially if you want to avoid unexpectedly intense material.
| If you want… | Try… | Why it may fit |
|---|---|---|
| Character drama in a bleak, frightening world | The Last of Us, Season 1 | Its appeal includes grief, hope, parenthood, coming of age, and relationships—not just survival horror. The Associated Press reported in 2023 on non-players who connected with its human story, including one viewer who was drawn in by a relationship-focused episode. Associated Press |
| Dark comedy and retro-futurist world-building | Fallout, Season 1 | It uses the franchise’s post-apocalyptic setting but follows new characters in a new location, giving newcomers a way into the world without needing to know the games. Its material is violent, so check whether that tone suits you. TIME |
| Stylized animation, action, and an emotional ensemble | Arcane | Rotten Tomatoes describes Season 1 as combining 2D and 3D animation with an emotionally compelling story. You can approach it as an animated drama rather than as homework about its game setting. Rotten Tomatoes |
| Claustrophobic, puzzle-like horror | Exit 8 | The film turns a game’s repeating corridor and anomaly-spotting rules into cinematic suspense, an example of adapting a gameplay idea rather than simply filming game events. BFI |
| Horror-comedy or family action-comedy | Werewolves Within or Sonic the Hedgehog 3 | Rotten Tomatoes characterizes the former as an even-handed horror comedy and the latter as the strongest entry in an amiable family-oriented series. Confirm tone and age suitability for the actual viewer; these descriptions are not a full content guide. Rotten Tomatoes |
Check whether the story works for newcomers
A screen story is easier to enter when it establishes who the characters are, what they want, and what is at stake without assuming you know a game’s lore. A new cast or a clear premise can help, but familiar characters are not automatically a barrier: emotional stakes and relationships can make a story legible on their own.
Fallout is a useful example of a fresh entry point. TIME notes that its new characters and location let the show use a recognizable franchise world without asking viewers to follow a particular player’s path through a game. The Associated Press’s reporting on The Last of Us describes another route: viewers who had not played the game responded to its relationships and broadly recognizable emotional themes.

- The Help (Three-Disc Combo: Blu-ray/DVD + Digital Copy)
If a review suggests that a title leans heavily on franchise lore, look for a spoiler-light synopsis or review that specifically comments on newcomer accessibility. You can then decide whether any background is worth seeking out, rather than assuming you must play first.
Consider how the game was adapted
Games do not all tell stories in the same way, so a close retelling is not the only measure of a successful adaptation. The structure of the source can help explain why one screen version follows familiar plot beats while another invents a new story in the same world.

Fixed narratives can support close retellings
The Last of Us follows a relatively linear, character-driven story. TIME contrasts that structure with the more open-ended possibilities of Fallout. A screen adaptation of a fixed narrative can stay close to its central events while using television to spend time on performances and relationships.

Role-playing and open-world games can involve player choices and many possible experiences. An adaptation may therefore work better by carrying over the setting, themes, or atmosphere while building a separate plot. Fallout takes that approach with new characters; Exit 8 translates the game’s looping structure and anomaly rules into film suspense. Use review scores as context, not a personal verdict
Aggregated reviews can help you build a shortlist, but critic and audience scores represent different groups and may diverge. Rotten Tomatoes’ guide to video game TV adaptations, published December 18, 2025, listed these season-level scores:
| Title and season | Tomatometer | Popcornmeter |
|---|---|---|
| The Last of Us, Season 1 | 96% | 86% |
| The Last of Us, Season 2 | 92% | 37% |
| Fallout, Season 1 | 93% | 95% |
| Arcane, Season 1 | 100% | 93% |
| Arcane, Season 2 | 100% | 81% |
These are snapshots from the guide, not permanent properties of the shows; scores can change. The difference between the two The Last of Us Season 2 figures also illustrates why it is useful to keep critic and audience aggregates separate. Rotten Tomatoes’ film guide states that its theatrical ranking requires at least 20 reviews, but neither a ranking nor a score can predict whether a specific title suits your taste. - In THE IMITATION GAME, Benedict Cumberbatch stars as Alan Turing, the genius British mathematician, logician, cryptologist and computer scientist who led the charge to crack the German Enigma Code that helped the Allies win WWII. Turing went on to assist with the development of computers at the University of Manchester after the war, but was prosecuted by the UK government in 1952 for homosexual a
A quick decision process
- Name the mood you want. Pick a genre and tone—such as drama, dark comedy, animation, family adventure, or horror—before considering the game connection.
- Check the premise. Find out whether the adaptation introduces its central characters and stakes or expects detailed franchise knowledge.
- Notice the adaptation approach. A close retelling, a new story in a familiar world, and a film built around a gameplay mechanic can all work; choose the approach that sounds appealing.
- Read reviews for fit, not just a score. Look for comments about tone, pacing, emotional focus, and newcomer accessibility. Treat critic and audience aggregates as separate, dated signals.
- Decide whether any background is actually needed. If a spoiler-light synopsis makes the setup clear, you can start watching without playing. If a review identifies lore as central, decide whether that context matters to you.
