Use an AI-generated answer as a lead, not as proof. Open its citations, check whether each source supports the specific claim, look for independent confirmation, and trace important quotations or summaries to their original context. For current, contested, legal, policy, or otherwise consequential claims, check authoritative and up-to-date evidence—and seek qualified human review when needed. The House of Commons Library puts the principle simply: “AI should be treated as an assistant, not an authority.”

Why an AI answer needs checking

A fluent answer can still be wrong, incomplete, or misleading. It may also include citations that are made up, outdated, irrelevant, or presented in a way that overstates what a source says. The House of Commons Library advises readers to treat AI output as unverified and to click through the links it provides rather than trusting their presence alone. House of Commons Library guidance

A 2023 study, “Evaluating Verifiability in Generative Search Engines,” found that 51.5% of generated sentences in its evaluation were fully supported by citations, while 74.5% of citations supported their associated sentence. The authors examined four systems then available—Bing Chat, NeevaAI, Perplexity, and YouChat. Those figures describe the systems, queries, and method in that paper; they are not an accuracy rate for current AI products. They do illustrate why a citation is a starting point for verification, not a guarantee. Read the study.

How to fact-check an AI answer, step by step

  1. Turn the answer into specific claims

Break a long response into individual facts you can check: names, dates, figures, quotations, causal explanations, and claims about what a policy or law means. A vague paragraph is difficult to verify as a whole; a precise statement gives you something to test.

  2. Open the citations and test the match

Check that each page loads and that it actually supports the particular statement attached to it. Read enough surrounding material to see whether the AI has omitted a qualification, confused a source’s position, or lifted a quotation out of context. The House of Commons Library recommends clicking AI-provided links and checking their trustworthiness; UNR Libraries advises tracing claims and quotations to their originals. 3. Identify who is behind the source

Look for the author and publisher, their relevant expertise on this subject, the intended audience, the source’s aims and funding, and its publication or update date. Check whether it explains where its evidence came from and how it reached its conclusions. A source can be authoritative on one topic but not another. Peer review can be useful, but it does not guarantee that a source is reliable. House of Commons Library source-evaluation checklist

  4. Read laterally instead of relying on the page’s own claims

Leave the page and search for independent coverage that confirms or challenges the claim. For an unfamiliar organization, publication, or expert, look for outside information about who they are and what they do rather than relying only on their own website. Stanford CRAFT describes this approach—checking a source against information elsewhere—as lateral reading. Stanford CRAFT: How do I fact-check AI search results?

  5. Trace summaries and quotations back to original evidence

When a page summarizes a study, quotes a person, or describes a document, find the study, original statement, document, dataset, transcript, or recording if it is available. Compare the wording and surrounding context with the AI’s version. Then check the original evidence against independent coverage; a primary source can establish what was said or published without settling every interpretation of it.

  6. Compare the evidence behind competing accounts

Do not count sources as if agreement alone settles a question. Ask whether they address the same claim, rely on independent evidence, and explain their methods and limitations. Several pages may repeat a single original report. Note where sources agree, where they differ, and which evidence each uses. These are judgment questions, not a universal score that certifies a source as trustworthy. House of Commons Library source-evaluation checklist; UNR Libraries source-evaluation guidance

  7. Check dates and get human review when the stakes justify it

For claims that can change, look for the latest relevant primary source and note when the underlying information was published or updated. For specialized, contested, legal, or policy questions, an expert can catch missing context or methodological problems that a quick source check may not reveal. The House of Commons Library identifies definitive factual answers, contested issues, legal or policy interpretation, and impartial analysis as areas where AI is less reliable and human oversight matters. How to judge sources when they disagree

Compare sources against the question you are trying to answer, not against a simple popularity or polish test. The House of Commons Library’s checklist covers currency, relevance, authority, purpose, and worldview; UNR Libraries also emphasizes investigating sources, finding better coverage, and checking original context. • Fit: Does the source address the precise claim, place, period, and population in question?
  • Authority: Does the author or publisher have relevant expertise on this topic?
  • Evidence and method: Can you inspect the evidence, and does the source explain how it was collected or interpreted?
  • Independence: Are the sources drawing on separate evidence, or repeating the same original report?
  • Currency: Is the material recent enough for a claim that may have changed?
  • Aims and limits: Are funding, purpose, assumptions, and limitations visible?
  • Original context: Can you check the underlying document, statement, data, or study?

If evidence remains mixed, describe what is established and what is disputed rather than forcing a single definitive answer. No checklist can certify trustworthiness in every case; the point is to make the reasoning and remaining uncertainty visible.

Protect privacy when using AI search

Fact-checking is separate from deciding what information to give an AI service. Avoid entering sensitive personal or confidential material unless you understand how that service handles it. The American Library Association’s guidance for libraries says they should disclose when third-party AI processes user data or affects search and recommendations, explain relevant choices, and offer a meaningful non-AI or minimally automated path where available. That is library guidance, not a universal description of consumer services’ terms; check the privacy settings and terms for the specific product you use. ALA guidance on AI use in libraries
