An XML parser’s error message can identify the input source and report a separate line and column, but the path is only as useful as the input information the parser received. Check the structured error fields first; if the parser was given a stream or in-memory content, trace the code that opened or created that input to find the original file.
What the path and position in an XML error mean
Many parser diagnostics contain two different kinds of information: a source identifier, such as a filename or URL, and a position within the input, usually a line and column. They are not interchangeable. The identifier tells you which source the parser associates with the error; the position helps locate the reported text within that source.
In Java SAX, SAXParseException exposes a system ID, line number, and column number. Oracle notes that the exception may include information for locating an error in the original XML document, as if it came from a Locator object. The API defines its line and column values as one-based and describes the reported position as the end position of the text that caused the exception. Oracle’s SAXParseException documentation explains these fields.
Why a parser may not show the original file path
A parser can report only the source information available through the input it was given. Depending on the API and how the input was created, that may be a filename, path, URL, path-like object, or an input source whose content comes from a stream.

Python’s SAX interface accepts filenames or URLs, path-like objects, and InputSource objects. When an InputSource has a character stream, the parser ignores its byte stream and does not open a URI connection to the system identifier. As a result, the system identifier should not be assumed to reveal where the character data originally came from. See the Python SAX reader documentation for the input behavior.
lxml’s error filename field is the name of the file where the message originated, if applicable. If the parser received a stream or in-memory text instead of a file path, it may have no original on-disk filename to report. The lxml parsing guide documents its error log and filename information.

How to trace the file that caused the error
- Identify the parser and exception type. Read the full error and determine whether it came from Java SAX, Python SAX, lxml, or another library. Field names and message formats differ by parser.
- Read the structured source field. Inspect the exception’s system ID or filename field rather than relying only on the human-readable message. Treat the value as the source identifier supplied or known to that parser.
- Check line and column separately. Use the reported position to inspect the identified input. For Java SAX, line and column are one-based, and the location is the end of the text that triggered the exception.
- Trace input construction if the identifier is absent or generic. Find the parser call site and determine whether it received a path, URL, path-like object, stream, or in-memory content. Follow the code that opened the file or populated the stream to recover the original path.
- Follow the reported entity. If the source identifier names an included or external entity, inspect that input rather than assuming the top-level XML document caused the error. Java SAX’s system ID identifies the entity that generated the exception.
Use the parser’s own location conventions
Do not assume that every XML library formats errors or counts positions the same way. Consult the documentation for the parser and exception actually in use, and prefer structured fields over parsing the error string. A line-and-column pair is meaningful only alongside that library’s conventions; the filename or system ID is a separate clue about the input source.
