In classic Outlook for Windows, your outgoing (SMTP) port is listed in the account’s outgoing server settings. You can read it in a few clicks, but the number itself depends on your mailbox. Outlook.com and Microsoft 365 business setup guidance both use port 587, while other providers and Exchange accounts can differ. Check the value against your provider’s instructions before you change anything.
Find the outgoing port in classic Outlook for Windows
Microsoft’s support documentation describes the outgoing server settings as the place to review or change the login information, server name, port, and authentication for an account. Follow these steps in Outlook for Microsoft 365 or the specified perpetual versions of Outlook for Windows:
- Select File.
- Under Account Information, choose the account you want to inspect, then open Account Settings.
- Select the account again, then choose Server Settings, and select Outgoing mail.
- Read the SMTP server name and port number shown with the outgoing server settings. Note the encryption method and sign-in requirements shown in the same area.
Labels can shift between Outlook releases and account types. If you cannot find Server Settings, compare the screen with Microsoft’s current Outlook help for your version rather than guessing a menu path.
Use the Control Panel route in older configurations
Some older or Control Panel-based mail profiles store the same information in a different window. Microsoft’s guidance for this route is:

- Open Control Panel and go to the Mail applet, then choose E-mail Accounts and select the account.
- Open the account’s Internet Email Settings window.
- Select the Advanced tab.
- Read the value under Server Port Numbers. The outgoing server (SMTP) entry is the one to compare, not the incoming server entry.
Changing a port here affects how Outlook sends mail for that account, so record the original value before you edit it.
Expected SMTP values by account type
A port number only makes sense alongside its host, encryption, and authentication method. The table below lists what Microsoft’s current support pages state. Where a provider’s page does not give a value, the table says so.

| Account type | SMTP host | Port | Encryption and authentication |
|---|---|---|---|
| Exchange or organization-managed mailbox | Not stated in the cited Microsoft guidance; obtain from your administrator | Not stated in the cited Microsoft guidance; obtain from your administrator | Set by the organization |
| Other email provider | Not stated here; provider-specific | Not stated here; provider-specific | Obtain from the provider’s documentation |
The Outlook.com figures come from Microsoft’s page on adding Outlook.com to another mail program. Microsoft’s Outlook.com support page states that Outlook.com requires the use of Modern Auth / OAuth2. Treat the Microsoft 365 values as setup-guide examples, not universal rules for every tenant.
Other providers and Exchange mailboxes
For a third-party provider, Outlook may detect the outgoing settings automatically. If it does not, take the SMTP server, port, encryption method, and authentication requirements from that provider’s own help pages. Do not copy port 587 from another account type without confirming it.

For an Exchange mailbox where the server details are unclear, Microsoft’s guidance is to sign in to Outlook on the web (formerly Outlook Web App), open Settings > Mail > POP and IMAP, and check the displayed server information. If that page does not answer the question, contact your email administrator.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common mistakes
- Reading the incoming IMAP or POP port instead of the outgoing SMTP port.
- Entering a port without its host name, encryption method, and authentication setting. A port alone rarely works.
- Assuming basic password authentication is available for every account. Outlook.com requires OAuth2, and organization policies can restrict sign-in methods.
- Treating a single “Outlook SMTP port” as the answer for personal, business, Exchange, and third-party accounts.
If sending fails after a change, restore the original port and encryption value you recorded, then confirm the sign-in method with your provider or administrator.
