A good earbud fit feels secure without pain or excessive pressure, and the tip seals comfortably in your ear canal. If in-ear earbuds sound thin or bass-light, or let in more outside noise than expected, reseating them or trying another tip size may help. Fit is personal: your left and right ears may need different sizes.
What a proper earbud fit should feel and sound like
The earbud should stay in place during ordinary movement without needing to be pushed in hard. Its tip should feel comfortable rather than stretched or pressured, while forming a seal in the ear canal. Apple’s guidance for AirPods Pro describes the goal as a good seal; other models may have different insertion or positioning instructions.
A weak seal can change what you hear. JBL explains that a poor fit can make in-ear headphones sound thin, with less bass, and reduce how well they block unwanted sound. A secure seal can help preserve bass and provide passive isolation—the reduction in outside noise created by the physical barrier of the ear tip.
How to find a comfortable seal
- Start with the supplied tips. Use the size already installed or try the other sizes included with your earbuds. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for how to insert that specific model.
- Adjust the position gently. Make small changes to the earbud’s position or rotation until it feels stable and comfortable. Do not force it farther into your ear to chase a tighter seal.
- Change one tip size at a time. If the earbud feels loose, slips out, or sounds unbalanced, try another supplied size. If a tip feels too large or uncomfortable, try a smaller one.
- Fit each ear separately. Check the left and right sides independently; they may need different sizes. A matching pair of sizes is not a requirement for a good fit.
- Use a fit test if your model offers one. Some earbuds provide an app-based seal or fit check. Treat it as a guide for that product, not a feature that every earbud has or a substitute for comfort.

Use sound and comfort to narrow down the size
Consider the fit in three ways: whether the sound seems balanced, whether the earbud remains stable, and whether it stays comfortable over time. A tip that seals but causes discomfort is not the right choice; a comfortable tip that repeatedly slips or leaves sound thin may need a different size or position. Bose and beyerdynamic both note that fit and sizing can vary between ears.
If sound remains thin or isolation seems weak, first reseat the earbuds and try another supplied tip size. This is a practical troubleshooting step based on how seal affects sound, not a definitive test of whether the earbuds are faulty. Avoid changing equalizer settings before checking the fit, since EQ cannot correct a loose physical seal.

What fit can—and cannot—do for noise cancellation
Passive isolation and active noise cancellation (ANC) are related but different. The ear tip’s seal physically blocks some outside sound; ANC uses microphones and electronics to reduce noise. A good seal can support ANC performance, but it does not guarantee silence.
Sennheiser says ANC generally handles lower-frequency sounds, such as engine hum or air conditioning, better than higher-frequency sounds such as voices. Results also vary by model and fit. When to consider replacement ear tips
If none of the supplied sizes is comfortable and stable, compatible replacement tips may be worth considering. Check the exact earbud model and how its tips attach before buying: tips are not universally interchangeable. Apple and Sony’s model-specific fit guidance illustrates why compatibility and instructions need to be checked for the particular product.
There is no universal best tip size or material established across earbuds. Choose based on the fit you achieve with your model: a comfortable seal, stable wear, and sound that no longer seems unusually thin.
