If WooCommerce checkout is slow, first identify exactly where the pause occurs and which request is waiting or taking unusually long. Checkout is a sequence of stages—not a single operation—so the evidence can point toward browser-side validation, a payment extension, server processing, or an external call. Do not assume the payment gateway is responsible until you have measured the affected step.

Start with one repeatable checkout action

Reproduce the problem with the same cart and the same action immediately before the stall. A useful test records enough context to distinguish a real change from differences in the setup.

  • Note whether the store uses the Checkout Block or a shortcode/classic checkout. WooCommerce’s documented event sequence below applies specifically to the Checkout Block; a classic checkout may follow different implementation and gateway-plugin behavior.
  • Record the WooCommerce and payment-gateway versions, browser and device, selected shipping method, and selected payment method.
  • Identify the trigger: initial checkout load, entering an address, selecting shipping, applying a coupon, or clicking Place Order.
  • Use a staging copy where practical. Keep the cart, browser, network, and steps as consistent as possible when comparing runs.

Shipping and coupon changes can trigger checkout recalculation, so note whether one of those actions comes just before the delay. WooCommerce documents checkout status and recalculation behavior in its Checkout Store documentation.

Find the slow request in the browser

  1. Open your browser’s developer tools before reproducing the issue, then select the Network panel and enable the option to preserve the log across navigation if your browser provides it.
  2. Clear the existing entries, perform the recorded checkout steps, and note when the stall begins and ends.
  3. Look for a request that remains pending or takes noticeably longer than the corresponding request in a successful run of the same flow.
  4. Record the request URL or path, method, status, response, and timing. Also note the action that triggered it.

Do not treat one raw duration as a universal failure threshold. These checks are for comparing the same flow under similar conditions; device, connection, cart, and checkout implementation can all affect observed timings. WooCommerce’s documentation describes checkout stages and endpoints, but does not establish a universal browser-side latency threshold.

Use the pause location to choose an investigation branch

Nothing has been sent to the server yet

For the Checkout Block, submission starts with before_processing validation. Payment extensions can also run client-side event listeners before the checkout processor sends the server request. If the pause occurs before the Store API checkout request appears, investigate client-side validation, payment observers, or related browser errors. The documented sequence is described in WooCommerce’s Checkout flow and events and How the checkout block processes an order guides.

The Store API checkout request is slow or pending

Once the Checkout Block’s conditions are met, its processor calls the Store API /checkout endpoint. If the request takes a long time between starting and receiving a response, investigate server-side checkout work, gateway processing, and outbound calls. This timing narrows the search; it does not prove that WooCommerce core, a particular extension, the host, or the payment provider caused the delay.

WooCommerce documents payment extensions’ client- and server-side integration behavior in its Payment method integration documentation. Use the actual request and its response alongside that integration context rather than inferring a culprit from the spinner alone.

The request returns, but checkout still appears stuck

Inspect the response status and body, then note whether the page proceeds to an error, order confirmation, or redirect. A completed request followed by a continuing spinner is different evidence from a request that never completes; investigate the response-handling or redirect stage as well as any preceding payment-extension behavior.

Correlate the browser evidence with WooCommerce and WordPress

Check WooCommerce logs

Open WooCommerce > Status > Logs and review entries around the exact reproduction time. Check relevant gateway or extension logging settings where available. WooCommerce describes logs as useful for investigating unexpected API values and broken application state in its logging documentation. A missing entry does not demonstrate that no delay occurred: not every slow operation necessarily produces a log message.

Inspect WordPress-side queries and calls when the evidence points there

WooCommerce identifies the Query Monitor plugin as a debugging resource. It can help expose database queries, PHP errors, AJAX and REST requests, hooks and actions, enqueued scripts and styles, and HTTP API calls. Use the relevant evidence to narrow the query, hook, or outbound call associated with the slow operation. Query Monitor complements the browser’s Network panel; it does not replace measuring which browser request stalls.

Test a suspected cause without changing several things at once

  1. Keep the reproduction steps fixed and compare the affected payment method with another method the store supports.
  2. In staging, selectively disable a suspected extension or customization, then repeat the same flow. Change one variable per comparison so the result remains interpretable.
  3. Compare the request identity, trigger, response, and server-side evidence—not just total checkout time. Do not treat timings from different devices, networks, carts, or checkout implementations as controlled comparisons.
  4. When a specific slow request or server operation is identified, share its path, method, status, timing, reproduction steps, and relevant log or Query Monitor evidence with the gateway or extension author, or with the host if the evidence points to host-level work.

Avoid disabling checkout or payment components on a live store unless you have a safe plan for preventing failed or abandoned orders. The goal is to isolate evidence, not to make broad changes based on a spinner.
