To trace a viral video, extract several clear still frames, reverse-search each one, investigate the earliest matching posts, then verify the scene, date and likely filmer independently. A search match can point you toward a source, but it does not prove who recorded or first published the clip—or that its current caption is accurate.
1. Turn the video into searchable still frames
Most image-search tools work with a still image rather than a video as a whole. Choose a few frames from different moments, especially ones with distinctive details such as signs, buildings, clothing, vehicles or unusual objects. A frame that is sharp and visually specific is more useful than a blurry shot or a generic close-up.
AFP Fact Check’s guide to finding a video’s source describes extracting keyframes with the InVID-WeVerify browser plugin. Its Keyframes feature accepts a video URL or uploaded file and produces stills you can inspect and search. The plugin is described as free, but its interface and integrations may change; if a step no longer matches, save still frames using another available method and search them individually.

Try more than one frame. Different moments may expose details that lead to different copies or earlier posts. If the first frames produce nothing, select additional, sharper or more distinctive ones. An empty search is not evidence that the video is original: the clip may be new, uncommon, or absent from the services’ indexed material.

2. Reverse-search each frame
Search the frames separately so you can compare what each one turns up. Google’s Search with an image help page documents several ways to do this: upload an image, drag it into the search box, paste an image URL, or use Lens on an image found on a webpage. Results can include visually similar images and pages containing the same or similar image; they are leads, not an authorship verdict.
Keep track of which frame produced each promising result. Open the result rather than relying on a thumbnail: the page may reveal a caption, an earlier embed, a credit, or a link to another account. Similar-looking frames can come from different clips, so check whether the candidate actually contains the same scene and sequence.
3. Look for earlier appearances—and treat dates carefully
For each promising match, look for the oldest traceable appearance. Google News Initiative’s advanced reverse-image-search training recommends refining image-search results by date and tracing earlier uses. Search distinctive words from captions alongside relevant names or locations, and compare reposts that may link back to an older source.

When available, Google’s About this image feature may provide information about earlier web appearances and when Google first saw an image. “First seen” describes what Google has indexed; it is not necessarily the image’s creation date, the video’s recording date, or the first time anyone posted it. Google also warns that image metadata can be changed or inaccurate, so neither a date clue nor a metadata field should settle the question by itself.
4. Check the candidate post and the video’s context
An early search result may be a repost, an aggregator, or an account repeating someone else’s material. Open the candidate post or page and assess the surrounding evidence:
- Timestamp and account history: Does the account have a plausible record of posting the footage, or is the clip a one-off repost?
- Caption and credits: Does the poster say they filmed it, credit another person, or link to an earlier post? Search distinctive caption phrases to find copies and attribution changes.
- Scene details: Do landmarks, signs, language, weather, lighting and other visible clues fit the claimed location and event?
- Clip integrity: Review the video frame by frame for edits or cropping that may remove context. A shortened clip can alter how an event appears without changing the individual frames that a reverse search matches.
- Independent confirmation: Look for reliable reporting or other independent evidence that supports the claimed place, date and event.
The Associated Press outlines comparable checks in its verification guidance, including examining visual details, checking for manipulation and contacting the original filmer. A matching frame alone does not establish that the clip shows what its current description claims.

5. Contact the likely filmer
Once you have a plausible earliest traceable post, ask the account holder whether they recorded the video, when and where it was filmed, and whether an earlier version exists. Their answers can help confirm or challenge the public trail; assess them alongside the post history and other corroboration rather than treating a claim of authorship as proof.
