Start with the film or show’s official credits and creator statements, then trace the named story to its earliest verifiable post or author page. A matching title or plot is only a lead: online horror stories are often copied and reposted, so the first search result may not be the original.
Start with the adaptation’s own attribution
Check the film or series’ official credits, distributor or production-company page, press notes, and statements from its writer, director, or producer. Search the exact adaptation title with terms such as “based on,” “adapted from,” “Reddit,” “NoSleep,” “creepypasta,” and any author name shown in the credits.
Prefer a direct production or creator statement over a fan wiki or a listicle that repeats an attribution without showing its source. Record the exact wording and speaker. “Adapted from” is a stronger claim than “inspired by”; neither should be silently upgraded to the other, and a thematic resemblance alone does not establish a source.
For example, in an October 14, 2017 Engadget interview, Channel Zero creator Nick Antosca discussed adapting online stories including “Candle Cove” and “No-End House,” as well as identifying and crediting their authors. That kind of creator-side account is a useful lead to verify against the story’s own record.

Find the story-side record
Search the claimed story title and distinctive wording alongside the likely platform or community name. For a Reddit story, open the candidate post and use Reddit’s Share control to copy its direct link. Record the displayed username, subreddit, title, and date. Reddit’s copyright report instructions likewise ask for the exact location of the post or comment and allow a link to the claimant’s original work as supporting information.
For an archive page, inspect its byline, submission or publication details, and links to the writer’s own site or profile. Creepypasta.com’s submission guidelines describe its bylines and original-work submissions; follow any author-supplied links rather than assuming an archive is the first publisher.
Compare candidates before calling one “the original”
When several versions appear, compare evidence rather than search ranking. A copy may be more visible than the first post, and an archive can preserve text without independently proving when or by whom it was first published. Creepypasta.com describes the genre as stories passed around forums and sites, with early classic entries drawn from ongoing forum threads; copying and circulation make provenance harder to establish (Creepypasta.com FAQ).

|---|---|
| Official credits or direct creator statement | Which story the adaptation’s makers say they used, and whether they describe it as an adaptation or an influence. |
| Author’s own page or original platform post | A direct source-side record, especially when the author, date, and wording are visible. |
| Credited archive entry | That the archive attributes a version to a named author or handle; it may not prove first publication. |
| Repost, recap, or fan discussion | A possible lead. It is weaker provenance unless it links to distinct primary evidence. |
Check whether apparent corroboration is genuinely independent. Several sites repeating the same claim do not amount to multiple confirmations if they all trace back to one unsupported post. If the evidence only identifies the earliest version you could verify, call it the “earliest version located,” not definitively the original.
What to do when the post is deleted
Keep the direct URL and look for independent corroboration: the adaptation’s credits, the writer’s own website or account, a credited archive, or contemporaneous discussion that links to the post. If an archive preserves the text, identify it as an archive copy and state what evidence connects it to the author or adaptation.
Reddit says deleted content is no longer publicly displayed on its platform and that its licensees must stop using deleted posts and comments. It also notes that third-party copies may remain (Reddit Help). A surviving copy can help with comparison, but its existence alone does not establish authorship or first-publication date.
Rank #4
Describe the attribution at the strength the evidence supports
Use precise wording and name the supporting source. A practical confidence ladder is:
- “Officially credited as based on” when the adaptation’s official credits or production materials say so.
- “The creator identified” when a named filmmaker or producer makes the attribution directly, but formal credits do not establish it.
- “The archive credits” when a story archive supplies the byline but the author’s own record is not verified.
- “Widely attributed” only when multiple sources support the attribution; explain if they rely on the same underlying claim.
- “Possible influence” when the evidence indicates a connection but does not identify a direct adaptation.
If no official source names a story, authorship is anonymous, or versions compete, say what remains unresolved. Creepypasta.com explains that while creepypasta as a genre or term has no single owner, rights to individual stories are a separate matter (FAQ).

Keep provenance separate from permission and copyright
Finding a likely source answers a provenance question; it does not decide who owns a story or whether an adaptation had permission. Creepypasta.com says an individual story’s author must be contacted about adaptation permission and that anonymous or unidentified authorship does not make a story public domain (FAQ). Its submission guidelines also distinguish original stories from derivative works and rewrites.
Reddit’s copyright overview describes general copyright principles, including the distinction between creative expression and ideas, facts, methods, or short phrases. A plot resemblance, title match, or post on Reddit is not enough by itself to determine ownership or adaptation rights; a specific legal conclusion requires case-specific analysis.
