To find the Moon and Jupiter, first check a sky-chart app or chart for your exact location, date, and time. Use it to see whether each object is above the horizon, then face the indicated direction and match the chart to the real sky. There is no single direction or hour that works everywhere: both objects’ positions change with time and location.
Find the Moon and Jupiter with a phone
A location- and time-aware planetarium app can show what is visible and where to look. NASA describes smartphone and computer apps as useful for discovering what is visible and locating it outdoors (NASA Science’s Skywatching FAQ). NASA JPL also recommends free planetarium or sky-charting programs for finding planets, including bright Jupiter (NASA JPL’s planet-finding guide).
- Open a sky-chart or planetarium app and confirm its observing location. Check that its date and time match when you plan to look; do not assume the app has selected the right location.
- Search for the Moon and Jupiter, or open a “tonight” or “visible now” view if the app offers one. Check whether each object is above the horizon.
- Read the direction and altitude the app gives you. Face that compass direction and compare the indicated position with the actual horizon and nearby stars. If the app overlays a sky view using your phone’s sensors, use it as a guide and cross-check it against the chart.
- If Jupiter is below the horizon, check a later time or another date rather than searching the wrong part of the sky.
Apps vary, and NASA’s general guidance does not endorse a specific one. A charting tool’s usefulness depends on having the correct observing details.

Find them with a star chart
Use a chart that matches the observing date, time, and location. Sky & Telescope’s interactive chart can include the Moon and bright planets and be customized (Sky & Telescope’s Interactive Sky Chart). A static chart can be out of date for a planet’s current position, so use one made for the relevant time or an interactive chart for exact placement.

- Set or select the correct date, time, and location if the chart allows it.
- For a circular all-sky chart, hold it overhead and rotate it until the north label aligns with real north. The edge of the chart represents the horizon.
- Use the mapped directions and star patterns around the Moon or Jupiter to orient yourself. Look toward the object’s mapped position, not just toward a general compass direction.
The Moon and planets appear in the ecliptic region, so that part of the chart is a useful broad search band. It does not mean they stay in one direction or are always above the horizon (NASA JPL’s planet-finding guide).
Phone app or star chart: which should you use?

Phones can be easier to update for a particular time and place, while a paper chart does not depend on battery power. In either case, the chart must be current and oriented correctly to help you locate the objects.

How to recognize Jupiter and choose equipment
Jupiter is one of the bright planets and can be easy to find when it is visible, but its position changes with date, time, and location. Confirm its current position on a chart rather than assuming that a bright point in the sky is Jupiter. The chart identifies the object and helps distinguish it from nearby stars (NASA JPL’s planet-finding guide).

Binoculars are optional: NASA says they show a wider area of sky than a telescope and can reveal Jupiter’s four largest moons (NASA Science’s Skywatching FAQ). Jupiter’s apparent diameter is typically about 30–45 arcseconds, compared with about half a degree for the Moon, according to Sky & Telescope’s Jupiter observing guide. Jupiter’s disk is therefore much smaller in apparent size; a telescope is needed to see detail on its cloud tops.
