To find a planet, set a sky app or chart to your location and observing time, then use its direction and altitude to locate the planet in the sky. Start with Jupiter or Saturn: both are bright naked-eye targets. Uranus and Neptune are much harder, and Neptune needs binoculars or a telescope.
How do I find a planet in the sky tonight?
- Choose a planet. Jupiter and Saturn are the easiest starting points without optical equipment.
- Set your location, date, and time. Enter the observing place and the time you plan to look in a planetarium app or sky chart. Planet positions change during the night and across the year.
- Note the planet’s direction and altitude. Direction tells you where along the horizon to look; altitude tells you how high above it. If the app displays a sky grid, use its azimuth and altitude markings. NASA JPL’s guide defines north as 0° and south as 180° around the horizon; 90° altitude is straight overhead. NASA JPL’s star-chart guide explains how to read a chart. For a circular paper chart, hold it overhead and align it with local north.
- Go outside and match the chart to the open sky. Check that the direction and height match the app or chart rather than guessing from a planet’s usual position. A printable monthly chart or a customizable chart for your location and time can also help; NASA JPL provides both through its skywatching resources.
A planet may not be visible at night at some times of year: it can be above the horizon only in daylight because it is on the Sun-facing side of Earth’s sky. A location-aware planner is also needed for accurate rise and set times, and a chart cannot account for local weather or buildings and hills blocking your view.
Which gas giants are easiest to see without a telescope?
Jupiter and Saturn
Begin with Jupiter or Saturn. NASA says five planets, including these two, are easily observed without a telescope. They appear as bright points of light; planets often shine more steadily than stars, which commonly twinkle. Use that steadier light as a clue, not a guarantee, and confirm the object against a location- and time-specific chart. NASA’s skywatching guide covers naked-eye planet viewing.
Uranus and Neptune
Uranus is a difficult naked-eye target and needs very dark skies to be seen without binoculars or a telescope, according to NASA JPL. Neptune is fainter still: NASA’s September 2026 guide gives it an approximate magnitude of 8 and says binoculars or a telescope are needed. The exact result with binoculars depends on sky darkness and observing conditions.
#1 Best Overall
- EASY-TO-USE ASTRONOMY BINOCULARS FOR BEGINNERS: Cometron 7x50 binoculars are an easy, affordable way to learn the night sky and get started with astronomy.
- 7X MAGNIFICATION: With a wide field of view that reveals a larger portion of the night sky, Cometron is ideal for panning across the Milky Way, exploring constellations, and viewing large objects like comets.
- 50MM OBJECTIVES WITH MULTI-COATED OPTICS: Large objective lenses gather more light while multiple layers of anti-reflective coatings boost light transmission. Views are bright and detailed with increased contrast and resolution.
- GREAT FOR DAY AND NIGHT USE: Not just for astronomy—these binoculars are also great for birdwatching, hiking, and scenic viewing with a close focus of 26.2 feet.
- TRIPOD-ADAPTABLE FOR STABLE VIEWING: Designed with a built-in tripod adapter socket so you can mount the binoculars on a standard tripod (adapter not included) for shake-free, extended viewing sessions.
Do I need binoculars or a telescope?
No equipment is required to try locating Jupiter or Saturn; an app or printed chart can guide a naked-eye search. Binoculars or a small telescope are optional if you want more detail. NASA notes that binoculars or a small telescope can reveal Jupiter’s larger moons, and optical aid can show Saturn’s rings. For Neptune, optical aid is necessary according to NASA’s September 2026 observing guide.

NASA Night Sky Network’s October 2026 planner lists Saturn at opposition on October 4, calling it one of the year’s best opportunities to see the planet. Opposition is a calendar cue, not a substitute for checking local rise and set times, altitude, direction, weather, and horizon obstructions. Use the planner’s October 2026 observing guide for the date-specific context and check a location-specific sky chart for your own observing time.
