Use Gaspy or another local fuel-price finder to compare nearby stations selling the fuel grade your vehicle needs. Check the listing’s freshness, account for any discount you can actually claim and the cost of a detour, then confirm the pump price before filling up: crowd-sourced prices can change quickly.
Find nearby stations and set the right fuel grade
- Open a local fuel-price finder. In Gaspy, allow location access or search the area you plan to visit. Gaspy describes its service as helping motorists find cheaper fuel in their area. Gaspy
- Select the fuel your vehicle uses. Compare like with like: Gaspy’s help says 91 is common around the country, and selecting Premium displays both 95 and 98. Gaspy help
- Set a practical search radius. Gaspy says its normal maximum radius is 20 km and can be changed in Settings. If you see no results, check the grade, turn off optional coffee or toilet filters, and widen the radius. You can also report a missing station to Gaspy. Gaspy help
Compare the real cost, not just the listed price
For stations selling the same grade, weigh the listed cents-per-litre price against how recently it was confirmed, the distance or detour, and any discount you are eligible to use. The lowest displayed price may not be the cheapest practical stop if reaching it costs time or fuel. There is no universal break-even formula: the result depends on your route, how much fuel you buy and the discount terms.
Also check whether the listed figure is a board price or the amount charged at the pump. Gaspy’s New Zealand App Store listing cautions that some Gull pump prices are four cents below the board price; this is a specific caveat, not a rule for every station. Treat app listings as leads, not guarantees
Gaspy says its prices are crowd-sourced: motorists share observations, and prices may change rapidly. A recently confirmed listing is useful for choosing where to check, but it cannot guarantee the price you will see when you arrive. Gaspy community code Gaspy help

Gaspy reports thousands of retail price observations per day. Its statistics page says its database covers daily prices for all fuel types, more than 1,700 stations over time, and price history from November 2015 onward. Use national price data for context, not a nearby-station answer
MBIE’s weekly fuel-price monitoring tracks national average prices and retail importer margins for regular petrol, premium petrol and diesel using the previous week’s data. It can help show broader price movements, but it does not rank stations near you in real time. MBIE says it does not warrant that the data is current, accurate or complete. MBIE’s adjusted retail price starts with a national average board price—the price advertised at fuel stations—and applies an adjustment to align it with Stats NZ’s CPI fuel-price series. That measure is not the live pump price at a particular station. MBIE monitoring methodology

The Commerce Commission publishes frequent retail pricing reports, but says the retail information comes from a third-party provider based on crowd-sourced prices. If you cannot find a useful result
- Make sure the selected grade matches your vehicle.
- Remove optional amenity filters, such as coffee or toilets, that may exclude stations.
- Expand the search radius or search the area you will travel through.
- Check the listing’s confirmation time and verify the price at the pump.
- If a station appears to be missing, report it to Gaspy.
