The best way to save on Steam is to decide what you actually want to play, set a price you are willing to pay, and check the game’s price history before buying. Wishlist alerts can surface discounts, but a large percentage off is not a reason to buy a game that does not fit your budget or plans.
1. Start with a shortlist of games you want
Add games you would genuinely buy at the right price to your Steam wishlist. Steam can notify you by email or through the mobile app when wishlisted games go on sale. See Steam’s email notification settings for the available sale-alert options.

Treat an alert as a reminder to check the offer, not as a recommendation to purchase. A wishlist is most useful when it reflects games you intend to play, rather than every title that catches your eye during a sale.
2. Set a target price before the sale
For each shortlisted game, decide the maximum price you would pay. Compare the final price in your region with that target; do not rely on the discount percentage alone. A steep discount can still be poor value if you do not expect to play the game.

Valve’s 2018 wishlist announcement described filters for discount levels, price tiers, and games purchasable with the current Steam Wallet balance. The client interface can change, so check the wishlist’s current filters rather than relying on a particular menu path. Valve’s wishlist announcement describes those features.
3. Check the price history before buying
A price-history chart helps you judge whether today’s offer is unusually low or a discount the game has reached before. For example, SteamDB provides price-history information, but its displayed lowest price is the lowest one captured during its recording window—not necessarily the game’s all-time low. Coverage, regional currencies, and recorded prices matter when interpreting the chart.
SteamDB is independent and is not affiliated with Valve. A historic low is useful context, not proof that waiting will produce a better offer: publishers set game prices and discounts, and no tracker can establish what a future sale will include.

4. Use sale dates as planning aids, not deadlines
Valve’s Steamworks seasonal-sale schedule, reviewed on October 4, 2026, lists these dates:

Check Valve’s seasonal-sales schedule for current dates if you are reading this later. Valve says Steam holds four seasonal sales a year, but the schedule does not guarantee that a particular game will be discounted. Its documentation says a seasonal-sale discount of at least 20% on a wishlisted game automatically triggers an email notification.

5. Put a spending limit between you and the sale page
Before browsing, decide on a total spending cap and choose the games that fit within it. Buy only when the game meets your price target, the offer makes sense against its price history, and you expect to play it soon. Otherwise, leave it wishlisted and wait.
This is a personal budgeting rule, not a Steam-enforced feature. It also helps separate two different decisions: whether a game is discounted and whether buying it now is worth your money.

6. Treat refunds as a fallback, not a buying strategy
Valve’s standard refund conditions for games generally allow a request within 14 days of purchase if the game has been played for less than two hours. Valve also says that refunding a pre-sale purchase and immediately buying it again at the sale price is not considered abuse. Exceptions apply, so check the current Steam Refunds policy for the specific purchase. The policy page was last updated April 23, 2024.
Valve cannot refund purchases made outside Steam. If comparing another seller, check that the seller is legitimate and that the offer is for the same edition and content, is valid in your region, and has acceptable refund terms. A lower listed price alone does not make two offers equivalent.
