Use YouTube Studio’s audience-retention report to find candidate moments, then compare them with concurrent-viewer changes and watch the replay around each timestamp. YouTube does not provide one universal score that automatically identifies the “best” moments in a continuous stream; the metrics help you shortlist segments for review.
What YouTube’s metrics can—and cannot—tell you
YouTube Studio provides video-level audience-retention key moments for streams, alongside average and peak concurrent viewers. These signals describe different things: retention shows whether viewers stayed with a portion, while concurrent viewers show how many were watching at a given point. Neither alone explains why a segment performed as it did.
A spike is not automatically a sign of success. It can reflect repeat viewing or sharing, but viewers may also have replayed an unclear section. Treat every chart change as a clue, not a verdict.
Find candidate timestamps in YouTube Studio
- Wait for processing. Audience-retention data typically takes 1–2 days to process, according to YouTube Help’s audience-retention guidance. An immediate post-stream snapshot is not the same as a completed retention report.
- Open the ended livestream. In YouTube Studio, go to Content, select the ended stream, then open its Analytics. Find the audience-retention report or key-moments view in the video analytics. YouTube’s live-stream metrics guide describes the available live and post-stream metrics. Report availability can vary, so check the analytics for the specific stream rather than assuming every broadcast has the same chart.
- Record the marked moments. Note timestamps for top moments, spikes, and dips. Use the video timeline or the report’s time display to locate each point in the replay.
- Compare with viewer movement. Check the stream’s average and peak concurrent viewers in Studio. A rise or fall can add context to a retention change, but it does not prove what caused it.
- Watch the replay around each timestamp. Review the segment before and after the point, then write a short reason for the change—such as a compelling event, a transition, a repeated section, or a confusing explanation. This replay review is a practical editorial step, not a YouTube-prescribed scoring formula.
Interpret top moments, spikes, and dips
| Signal | What it suggests | What to check in the replay |
|---|---|---|
| Top moment | A portion with almost no viewer drop-off. | What held attention? Consider whether a similar segment could appear earlier or be developed further. |
| Spike | A portion watched more than adjacent portions; repeat viewing or sharing may contribute. | Look for a strong moment, but also check whether viewers needed to rewatch because something was unclear. |
| Dip | A portion viewers skipped or where they stopped watching. | Inspect the content and transition at that point for a possible attention break. |
YouTube Help defines these key moments in its audience-retention guidance. A labeled moment is a starting point for investigation, not a guarantee that the segment caused a change.

Use API data for a more detailed review
If you need a custom analysis, YouTube’s Analytics API documents audience-retention measures including audienceWatchRatio, relativeRetentionPerformance, startedWatching, and stoppedWatching. The audience-retention report requires a single video ID; its measures are indexed by elapsed video time. See the official YouTube Analytics API channel reports documentation.
audienceWatchRatiocompares views of a portion with total video views and can exceed 1 when people rewind and rewatch. It is not a count of unique viewers. The metric definition is in the YouTube Analytics API metrics reference.relativeRetentionPerformancecompares retention with other YouTube videos of similar length. It is a comparative measure, not raw audience size.startedWatchingandstoppedWatchingcan help identify where viewing begins or ends in the report’s elapsed-time data.
The API also documents a separate concurrent-viewer report for a single livestream. Its positions generally represent minutes, unlike retention measures indexed by video elapsed time. Use that report to locate audience-size changes, then compare those points with retention candidates; do not treat the two timelines as interchangeable.

A repeatable shortlist-and-review method
- Build a candidate list: record each top moment, spike, and dip visible in the processed retention report.
- Add audience context: note whether concurrent viewers rose, fell, or stayed broadly steady around the same point.
- Replay each segment: watch enough before and after the timestamp to understand the setup and outcome, rather than judging a chart point in isolation.
- Label the likely explanation: distinguish attention held, possible replay or sharing, audience movement, and possible confusion. Mark uncertain explanations as uncertain.
- Choose what to act on: use well-supported patterns to shape future programming or presentation. A dip may point to a transition worth improving; a spike may merit closer inspection before repeating the segment.
This method identifies candidates for human review. YouTube’s published documentation does not define a special 24/7-stream algorithm or universal “best moment” score.

Why live and post-stream numbers may differ
Live Control Room metrics are real-time estimates, whereas Analytics data is processed and measured differently. Do not assume a live snapshot and a later retention report are identical. For a post-stream review, use the processed video-level report when it is available and keep the live figures as real-time context. YouTube explains these metric views in its live-stream metrics guide.
