Search Bellevue, Redmond, Kirkland and other Eastside cities as distinct job locations, then verify every opening on the employer’s careers site. Bellevue’s recent employment gains make the Eastside worth a separate search, but they do not prove that technology hiring is booming there. Regional tech postings have weakened, so broaden your search by relevant skills and adjacent job titles while using local labor-market data for context—not as a count of live vacancies.
What the Seattle-area hiring slowdown means
Seattle-area technology hiring is strained, but the broader labor market is mixed. The Workforce Development Council of Seattle-King County’s Workforce Index reported 68,932 openings across 9,995 unique employers in King County during April–May 2026, with a median advertised salary of $88,320. It also reported 4.7% unemployment through May 2026. These measures describe different parts of the market and are dated snapshots, not an October 2026 count of active technology vacancies. See the Workforce Index for its indicators and measurement windows.
The mix of postings matters as much as the total. The index says 12 of its 20 most-posted roles were frontline or service occupations, and describes demand as plateauing rather than retreating. KUOW’s July 22, 2026 report, drawing on council data, said job growth was shifting toward healthcare and frontline services as technology and science listings declined. In the measured month, software-engineer openings fell 56%, while truck-driver openings rose 231% and security-guard openings rose 146%. Those are changes in postings—not hires—and a single month is not a reliable long-term forecast. Jeremy Warren, the council’s director of impact, told KUOW, “It’s just been a drastic change from the early part of the year,” in its report on the shift in job growth.

Layoff notices are another signal, but they are not the same as completed job losses. The Workforce Index reported 7,453 King County workers affected by WARN notices from January through June 2026, including 5,481 in the information sector through June 8. Separately, Axios reported 9,027 workers affected by notices across King and other counties through August 18, 2026, of whom 6,766 were in the information sector. Axios noted that notices describe planned layoffs, not necessarily completed layoffs. Washington chief labor economist Anneliese Vance-Sherman characterized information-sector employment as relatively flat after its 2022–23 decline, telling Axios: “Flat is unusual for this traditionally high-growth sector. I think it is fair to say that the sector is in the midst of a shift.” Read the Axios report on regional layoffs for that context.

The Workforce Index also identifies artificial intelligence as the fastest-growing skill in postings. That is a trend across postings, not evidence that AI expertise is required for every technology job; judge each role by its stated qualifications.
Why search the Eastside separately?
Employment trends differ by city. GeekWire, citing a Downtown Seattle Association report, said Bellevue gained 5,375 jobs from 2024 to 2025 while Seattle shed 18,065. It also reported that Amazon employed 15,700 people in Bellevue at the end of 2025, citing Bellevue’s Annual Comprehensive Financial Report. This is a meaningful geographic contrast, but the overall job gains do not establish how many were technology positions or how many technology openings are available now. Nor does a large employer presence prove that the company has a current vacancy. See GeekWire’s report on Bellevue and Seattle employment.
Build separate searches for Bellevue, Redmond, Kirkland and other Eastside worksite locations that fit your commute. Keep Seattle as its own location rather than assuming a Seattle listing covers Eastside offices. For each result, check the worksite city, whether the job is remote, hybrid or onsite, and whether the requisition is still active on the employer’s own careers site.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUse local data to guide the search—not replace listings
Check Washington ESD reports for market context
Washington’s Employment Security Department (ESD) publishes employer-demand reports that can help show what employers are seeking by county and statewide. Its supply-and-demand reports compare job openings with unemployment-benefit claimants. Use these reports to frame questions about location and occupation, not to assume that a listed demand category means an employer has a live requisition. Report dates and figures change; consult the current official report before relying on a specific number.
Use the Workforce Index to spot regional patterns
The Workforce Index brings together regional indicators, occupation patterns and links to support. Pay attention to the date range attached to each measure: unemployment, advertised openings and WARN notices have different reporting periods. Its county-level figures are useful for understanding the wider market, but they do not provide a like-for-like live vacancy count for Bellevue, Redmond, Kirkland and Seattle.
Confirm every opportunity with the employer
Once a role looks relevant, open the employer’s own careers page and confirm that the posting is active, where the work is based, and what work arrangement it requires. Compare Seattle and Eastside listings role by role: title and responsibilities, worksite and commute, remote or hybrid expectations, employer and team stability, compensation and benefits, and how closely the stated skills match your experience. Regional totals cannot substitute for these listing-level details.
Rank #4
Broaden the search beyond one title or a few companies
If software-engineer searches are producing little, do not assume that every related function is hiring—but consider adjacent titles when they genuinely fit your background. Depending on your experience, useful search terms may include systems, cloud operations, security, data, technical program management, customer engineering or IT support. Search by function and skill as well as employer name, and apply the same location filters to Eastside cities separately.
For each target role, make a short list of the skills you can demonstrate and use those terms in searches and application materials. Then read the actual responsibilities and required qualifications: a title can vary between employers, and a neighboring role is not automatically a match. The purpose of broadening is to uncover relevant work beyond one narrow title, not to apply indiscriminately.
