System settings are the built-in controls for changing how a computer or phone looks, connects, protects your data, and works with apps. The quickest route depends on your device: press Windows key + I on Windows 11, open the Settings app on an Apple device, or swipe down from the top of an Android screen to reach Quick Settings. For deeper changes on Android, open the main Settings app.
What system settings control
Settings let you adjust device-wide preferences and capabilities. On Apple platforms, the Settings app covers areas such as appearance, network connections, account details, accessibility, language, and region; some controls also manage individual apps’ access to features such as location, camera, microphone, notifications, Siri, or Search. Apple Developer Documentation’s Settings guidance describes the app’s broad role, but it is design guidance rather than a step-by-step manual.
Windows groups controls for areas including devices, connectivity, personalization, accounts, accessibility, privacy, and updates. Android separates frequently used toggles in Quick Settings from the fuller Settings app, where deeper device and account options are found.
Open Settings on your device
Windows 11
- Press Windows key + I to open Settings.
- To locate a particular control, select the Settings search field and type what you need. Microsoft also documents Ctrl + E as a shortcut to focus the search box.
- If you prefer to browse, look through categories such as System, Bluetooth & devices, Network & Internet, Personalization, Apps, Accounts, Time & language, Accessibility, Privacy & security, and Windows Update. Category names and arrangement can vary by version.
For Windows 10, the interface and category names differ from Windows 11. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; see Microsoft’s Windows 10 support notice for the support-status details.

Apple devices
Open the system-provided Settings app. The controls available and their locations depend on whether you are using an iPhone, iPad, Mac, or another Apple device, as well as its software version. For exact instructions, use Apple Support guidance for your device and the specific change you want to make; the Apple platform guidance cited above does not establish one universal menu path.
Android phones and tablets
- Swipe down from the top of the screen once to show the first Quick Settings controls. Swipe down again to reveal the full panel.
- Tap a tile to switch its control on or off. Tap the tile’s label for a quick adjustment, or touch and hold the tile to open advanced settings.
- To customize the panel, swipe down twice, choose Edit, then add, remove, or reorder tiles.
- For more detailed configuration, open the device’s main Settings app. To find Google account and service options, open Settings and tap Google.
Google notes that some Quick Settings instructions require Android 13 or later. Android manufacturers can customize the interface, so labels and steps may differ. Change app permissions carefully
Windows privacy controls
In Windows 11, go to Settings > Privacy & security to review permissions for features such as location, camera, microphone, contacts, and calendar. Microsoft cautions that desktop apps may not appear in these lists or be governed by the same controls as Microsoft Store apps. A permission switch in Settings therefore may not provide a complete inventory of every desktop program’s access. See Microsoft’s app-permission guidance.

Apple app-specific controls
Apple’s Settings app can include app-specific controls, including access to location, camera, microphone, and notifications. The exact route varies by Apple device and software version; consult the relevant Apple Support instructions before changing a particular permission.

Android restricted settings
Pause before granting an app a restricted setting, especially accessibility access. Google warns that accessibility access can let an app read screen content and interact with other apps on your behalf. Allow restricted settings only when you understand why the app needs them and trust its developer. See Google’s guidance on restricted settings.

- Operating-system version: Windows 10 and Windows 11 use different interfaces, and Android instructions may require a particular release.
- Device type: Apple settings differ among iPhone, iPad, and Mac.
- Manufacturer customization: Android makers can change labels, layouts, and available controls. If a Google instruction does not fit, check the device maker’s support information.
- Feature availability: A control may be grouped differently or described under another category after a software update.
If you cannot find a setting, first confirm the operating system and version, then use its built-in search where available. On Windows, search Settings directly; on Android, check both Quick Settings and the main Settings app. For device-specific Apple or customized Android paths, use the manufacturer’s current instructions rather than assuming a menu path applies everywhere.
