To find an existing photo in Google Photos, open Search in the mobile app or visit photos.google.com/search on a computer. Search for a person by name only after Face Groups are enabled and the face group has a label; for a place, object, or scene, try a descriptive word or phrase.
Open Google Photos search
- On a phone or tablet: Open the Google Photos app and tap Search. The exact controls can vary by platform and app version.
- On a computer: Go to photos.google.com/search and enter your query.
Find photos of a person or pet
Browse face groups
In Search, tap a suggested face or open People & pets to browse grouped photos. If the person or pet is not shown, name-based search may not be ready to use.
Search by a name or nickname
Turn on Face Groups and label the relevant face group first. After that, search using the label. To find photos of yourself by searching me
, label your own face group me
. Labels are account-specific: Google says face groups and labels are private by default and are not shared with other accounts when you share photos.

Google says enabling it allows models of faces in photos to be made; those models may be considered biometric data in some jurisdictions. Google’s guidance says turning Face Groups off deletes the face models, groups, and labels, subject to retention policies and account-inactivity conditions. Some Face Groups operations are country-limited.
#1 Best Overall
- Attention-grabbing design meets the latest evolution of the Google Pixel Camera on the new Google Pixel 11 Pro; Gemini Intelligence helps manage details so you can live in the moment[1]; and the phone is available in two sizes
- Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan: Works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers[2]
- Stay informed without looking at your screen: When your phone is face down, Pixel HiLight gently alerts you with subtle glowing lights when your favorite contacts are calling or you’re talking with Gemini; exclusive to Google Pixel 11 Pro phones
- Magic Capture catches the moment as you live it: With just one tap, Pixel 11 Pro captures video and photos, and automatically edits, crops, and unblurs a curated collection, ready to share – and you get the memory of how it felt to be in the moment
- Two new cameras for more brilliant photos: A larger telephoto sensor captures 30% more light for clear, beautiful photos and videos, even in the dark[3]; Pixel’s longest zoom ever helps you capture details from impressive distances[4]
Find a place
Search for a location name, or combine it with a subject, such as colorful sunsets in Mexico
. Google recommends enabling camera location settings to help organize and search photos by location. A photo needs usable location context to match reliably, so a place query may not find images that lack it.
Find an object, activity, or scene
Enter a simple subject such as beach
or dog
, or describe a scene with its people, activity, and setting. Google’s example searches include Emma at the playground
and drinking tea by the fireplace
. These are useful patterns, not a guarantee that every query will return a match.

You can also search for text connected with a photo. Put a phrase in quotation marks to look for an exact match in supported text fields, such as filenames, camera models, captions, or text visible in a photo. Without quotation marks, the search is broader.
Check whether a result is shared with you
Search results can include photos and videos from shared albums or conversations that you have not saved to your own library. Check the shared-content badge or ownership information if a result seems unfamiliar. To leave shared items out, use the results menu’s shared with me control.
Use Ask Photos for a complex request, if available
Google distinguishes ordinary search, which suits straightforward queries, from Ask Photos, which can handle more conversational requests. Ask Photos is optional and requires opting in to Gemini features. Google describes it as experimental and cautions that it may return unexpected or inaccurate results, so open the image and verify its details rather than relying on the answer alone.

Google notes that “Some features aren’t available in all geographic regions, all domains, or all account types.” Face Groups, Ask Photos, and other controls may therefore differ by account or location. Ordinary descriptive searches for objects and scenes do not require Ask Photos.
