To identify who owns a film studio name and whether it is registered, search the official trademark register for the exact name and close variants, then inspect the individual record’s owner, goods and services, and current status. For a U.S. check, use the USPTO Trademark Search and verify the record in TSDR. For other countries, start with WIPO’s database and confirm important results with the relevant national or regional register.
What you need to know before searching
A trademark record can identify the legal owner associated with a particular mark, but it does not by itself establish who owns a film studio as a business. It tells you about the mark recorded in a particular territory and its listed goods or services. A studio brand may be listed under a company or other legal entity, so search both the name used publicly and any likely legal owner.
- Exact mark: Note the spelling, spacing, punctuation, and whether you are checking words, a logo, or both.
- Territory: Decide which country or region matters. Trademark rights and registrations are territorial.
- Related services: Consider the studio’s relevant activities, rather than assuming a name record covers every kind of film or entertainment service.
How to check a film studio name in the United States
1. Search USPTO Trademark Search
Open the USPTO Trademark Search system. Search the exact name as a wordmark first, then try meaningful spelling and spacing variants. If you know a likely company name, search by owner as well. If you have a serial or registration number, use it to locate the specific record.

The USPTO search system supports searches by wordmark, owner, goods and services, serial number, registration number, status, and class. Its results include both registered and applied-for marks. Use the available filters to narrow results, but do not assume a class or a single phrase search captures every relevant record.

2. Open the record and verify its details
For each potentially relevant result, check the mark wording, named owner, goods and services, filing or registration identifiers, and current status. The owner shown in a record is the owner associated with that record; compare it with the studio’s public-facing name rather than assuming the two are identical.
3. Confirm status and documents in TSDR
Open the record through TSDR, the USPTO’s Trademark Status and Document Retrieval service. Review the status and available documents. The current owner may differ from the original applicant if ownership changed, so check later ownership filings and the record history when that distinction matters.

How to tell an application from a registration
A filed application is not a registration. Read the record’s current status rather than treating every search result as an active registered trademark.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Pending or live application: The mark has been applied for, but the record does not establish that it is registered.
- Live registration: The record identifies a registration that is currently live. Confirm the registration details and associated goods or services.
- Inactive record: An inactive record is not a current live registration. Its history may still help explain what happened to the application or registration.
Use the record’s status and documents to establish which category applies; the appearance of a name in search results alone is not proof of registration.

How to check outside the United States
For a cross-border search, use WIPO’s Global Brand Database as a broad starting point. Where supported, search by name, owner or holder, number, and relevant goods or services. Then check the national or regional register for each territory that matters. WIPO itself notes that consulting those registers may also be prudent.
| Lookup route | Useful for | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| USPTO Trademark Search and TSDR | U.S. trademark applications and registrations | Mark, owner, goods and services, status, identifiers, and record documents |
| WIPO Global Brand Database | A broad search across international marks and participating national or regional collections | Relevant result details, followed by confirmation in the applicable national or regional register |
What a database search can—and cannot—tell you
A matching result identifies a record to investigate; it does not automatically show that a studio owns every use of the phrase or determine whether another party may use a similar name. The record’s status, territory, mark, and goods or services all matter.
Rank #4
The USPTO’s help explains that its goods-and-services entries do not include synonyms or every potentially related good or service that might raise a likelihood-of-confusion issue. It describes database searching as “an important part of doing a clearance search before you apply for a trademark registration.” A database lookup is therefore a useful first check, not a complete legal clearance opinion. For a consequential launch, dispute, or cross-border decision, consider consulting a qualified trademark professional.
