To find out whether your local grocery store donates unsold food, verify the specific branch: ask its manager or customer-service team whether it currently donates edible surplus and which organization receives it, then confirm the relationship with that organization. A company-wide donation program, map listing, or nearby food bank is a lead—not proof that your store participates.
How to verify a store’s food donations

Identify the exact location
Write down the store name and street address. Donation practices can differ among branches of the same chain, so ask about the particular location rather than the company in general.

Ask the store
Call or visit and ask for the manager, customer-service lead, or community-relations contact. You can ask: “Does this location currently donate unsold food that is still safe to eat? If so, which local organization receives it, and is the schedule regular or limited to certain foods or days?”

Confirm with the recipient
Contact the food bank, pantry, or food-rescue organization the store names. Ask whether it currently receives food from that branch or chain, which types of food it accepts, and how collection works. Recipients differ in what they can accept and handle; the EPA advises checking accepted items directly. See the EPA’s Food Donation Basics.

Use directories to find contacts
The Feeding America food bank locator lets you search by ZIP code for a member food bank; contact it directly about local services. The EPA Excess Food Opportunities Map can help identify potential food generators and recipients in an area, but its establishment information is unverified and may not be accurate or complete. Treat both tools as ways to find possible contacts, not confirmation of a donation relationship.

Check local announcements, then verify
A store sustainability page, local news story, or recipient announcement naming a branch can point you in the right direction. Check the publication date and whether it identifies your location; then contact the store and recipient to confirm the arrangement is still active.

What counts as confirmation—and what does not
The clearest confirmation is a current, branch-specific answer from the store identifying its recipient, backed by that recipient’s confirmation that it receives donations from the location or chain. Ask about timing and food categories too, since an arrangement may cover only certain items or days.

- A directory or map entry: a possible contact or lead. EPA explicitly describes map locations as potential and unverified.
- A nearby food bank: evidence that a possible recipient is in the area, not that it has a relationship with your store.
- A dated local report: helpful background, but it may describe a past arrangement or a different branch.
How to compare possible recipient organizations
If the store gives you more than one possible recipient, compare the practical details rather than assuming any organization can take every type of surplus.

- Food categories: Ask whether the organization accepts perishables, prepared foods, or only shelf-stable items.
- Collection: Find out whether it picks up from the store or requires delivery, and whether it can meet the store’s schedule.
- Safe handling: For temperature-sensitive food, check that the recipient can transport and handle it safely and distribute it promptly.
- Current relationship: Ask whether it confirms an active arrangement with the named branch or chain.
Food safety and legal context
Unsold does not automatically mean suitable for donation. FDA guidance for retail food establishments says donated food should be handled under applicable state or local food codes. Its retail food donation guidance covers keeping food properly labeled and unopened products in original packaging, preventing contamination, maintaining safe temperatures, training handlers, using appropriate transport equipment, keeping records, and following local or state requirements. It specifies hot foods at 135°F or above and cold foods at 41°F or below. These are operational practices for stores and recipient partners, not tasks shoppers need to carry out.
The legal framework is also qualified. The EPA says the Bill Emerson Good Samaritan Food Donation Act was updated in January 2023 to include qualified direct donors giving food to people in need; protection depends on good-faith conduct without negligence or intentional misconduct. USDA describes qualified direct donors as including retail grocers. See the USDA food waste FAQs and EPA’s Food Donation Basics for federal context. State and local requirements still matter, and legal protections do not show that a store donates or make every unsold item eligible.

Why verification matters
EPA estimates that about 66 million tons of food were wasted in the United States across retail, food service, and residential sectors in 2019; that is a broad estimate, not a grocery-store-only figure. The agency also reports USDA estimates that 12.8% of U.S. households—44.2 million people—experienced food insecurity at some time in 2022. These figures describe the wider problem, not the practices of any individual store. The EPA’s map lists more than 960,000 potential excess-food generators and more than 15,000 potential recipients, but those are potential locations, not verified donation relationships. For example, Feeding America says companies can post donations through MealConnect and be connected with a local network partner for pickup. That describes one possible industry channel; it does not establish that a particular retailer or branch uses it.
