Check the official docket or court calendar for the court handling your case, then review your latest court notices. A postponement request, the other party’s agreement, or an informal assurance does not by itself confirm a new hearing date. Unless the court confirms a change, treat the original date and existing deadlines as active and promptly ask the court if the status is unclear.
Procedures differ by court, jurisdiction, and case type. The steps below use official U.S. federal court guidance as examples; start with the court named on your hearing notice.
How to check whether your hearing is still scheduled
- Identify the case and court. Use your latest hearing notice to find the court name, case number, case type, and scheduled date. Make sure you are checking the right court and case.
- Check the official docket or calendar. Open the court’s official case docket or hearing calendar and look for the latest entry about the hearing. The Central District of California’s People Without Lawyers FAQ says the docket provides the most recent information about a case. Access and public visibility vary by court.
- Review court notices. Check postal mail and any electronic filing or court-notice account you use. The same FAQ explains that court-generated forms and orders are mailed when someone has not signed up for electronic notice.
- Look for official confirmation. Find an order, updated hearing notice, docket entry, or other official communication that states the new date or confirms cancellation. A request or a tentative signal is not the same as an approved change. The Central District of California Bankruptcy Court explains that a hearing is not continued until the court approves the request and notifies parties by entering an order and/or posting a tentative ruling: continuance guidance.
- Contact the court if the status is unclear. Use the phone number on your notice or the contact details on the court’s official website. Give the clerk or designated court contact your case number and scheduled date. Ask whether the hearing remains on calendar, how a change will be confirmed, and whether other deadlines are affected.
- Save the confirmation. Keep the notice, order, or other confirmation. Update your calendar only when the court’s status is clear.
A docket, notice, or court-directed contact is more useful than an informal message because it can identify the specific case and the court’s current decision. If sources seem inconsistent, contact the court using its official contact information rather than relying on an unverified message.

If you have not received confirmation
Do not assume the date changed just because a continuance request was filed, the other side agreed, or someone said the court might reschedule. The Northern District of California’s Request to Change the Date of a Hearing packet, updated in November 2024, says: “If you do not hear from the Court, then assume that the hearing date has not changed, and you need to follow the original deadline.” That is guidance from that court; check the rules and instructions for the court handling your case.

Federal traffic-court examples illustrate why guessing is risky, but they are not universal rules. The Eastern District of California’s Redding CVB page says a person is not excused from the original date until receiving notice of the continued date. The District of Arizona’s CVB hearing page warns that failure to appear may result in a warrant. These are specific traffic-violation procedures, not a statement that every missed hearing carries the same consequence. If confirmation has not arrived, promptly contact the court and do not miss the scheduled date based on an unconfirmed assumption.
If you need to ask for a postponement
Follow the procedure for your court and case type. A request does not guarantee that the hearing will move. The available channels and deadlines below are examples for particular federal court processes, not nationwide rules.
Rank #2
- The Central District of California’s CVB violation-notice instructions allow a phone call to the listed number or a written request to the court; the written request must arrive at least one week before the scheduled date.
- The District of Arizona’s CVB hearing page says staff will email the applicant if a continuance is granted and provide the new court date.
Check your own notice and the court’s official instructions for the correct process. Until the court confirms approval, keep the scheduled hearing and existing deadlines on your calendar.

- Record the new date and time, the courthouse or remote appearance method, and where the confirmation came from.
- Read the order or notice for any changed filing, service, or appearance requirements.
- Ask specifically whether other deadlines moved; do not assume a hearing continuance changes them. The Central District of California Bankruptcy Court notes that deadlines may be extended in some instances. In contrast, the Northern District of California’s civil local rules say continuing a motion hearing does not extend opposition or reply deadlines unless the court orders otherwise. The effect depends on the applicable rules and order.
- Continue checking the docket and court communications for later changes.
- If you have a lawyer, share the notice promptly. If you are representing yourself and the procedure or consequences are unclear, consult the court’s official self-help resources or seek qualified legal assistance.
Where to get help
Use the court listed on your notice as the starting point for official information. Its website may provide docket access, calendars, rules, clerk’s office contacts, and self-help services. For example, the Central District of California FAQ directs people without lawyers to its Legal Help Center. Such resources are court- and location-specific; confirm that any help service applies to your jurisdiction and case.
