Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe quickest way to identify a motherboard in Windows is to open System Information. Press Windows + R, enter msinfo32, and press Enter. In the window that opens, select System Summary and check BaseBoard Manufacturer and BaseBoard Product.
BaseBoard Manufacturer is the motherboard maker, while BaseBoard Product is the board model or manufacturer-defined part number. The same screen also shows BIOS Version/Date. MSI describes this method.
Find your motherboard with System Information
- Press Windows + R to open the Run dialog.
- Type msinfo32 and press Enter.
- In System Information, select System Summary in the left pane.
- Find BaseBoard Manufacturer for the manufacturer.
- Find BaseBoard Product for the model or board part number.
For example, the fields may identify a board as an ASUS, MSI, Gigabyte, or ASRock model. The exact value depends on what the motherboard firmware reports to Windows. Also note the BIOS Version/Date field if you need the installed firmware version.
Use PowerShell to identify the motherboard
PowerShell is useful when you want a short result that can be copied into a support request or saved as part of a hardware inventory. Open Windows PowerShell or PowerShell, then run:

Get-CimInstance -ClassName Win32_BaseBoard | Select-Object Manufacturer, Product, Version
The output has three relevant fields:
| Field | What it means |
|---|---|
| Manufacturer | The motherboard manufacturer. |
| Product | The manufacturer-defined baseboard model or part number. |
| Version | The board version reported by firmware. |
Windows represents the motherboard through the Win32_BaseBoard WMI class. Microsoft describes a baseboard as the motherboard or system board.
Show the serial number and other motherboard fields
To request more information, run:
Get-CimInstance -ClassName Win32_BaseBoard | Select-Object Manufacturer, Product, Model, Version, SerialNumber, PartNumber
Depending on the computer, some properties may be blank, generic, or inaccurate. The command reports firmware and SMBIOS data supplied by the manufacturer; incorrectly configured hardware data may be unavailable. This is particularly common with laptops and OEM systems, where the baseboard may have an internal code instead of a retail motherboard name. See Microsoft’s guidance on collecting computer information.

Check the BIOS version separately
The BIOS version is separate from the motherboard model. To display it in PowerShell, run:
Get-CimInstance -ClassName Win32_BIOS | Select-Object SMBIOSBIOSVersion
This can help when checking whether a BIOS update applies to your specific board. Do not use the BIOS version as the motherboard model: it identifies firmware, not the physical board.
Use Command Prompt with WMIC
On systems where the legacy WMIC utility is still installed, open Command Prompt and run:

wmic baseboard get product, manufacturer
For the BIOS version, use:
wmic bios get smbiosbiosversion
WMIC is an older interface and is not the preferred method on current Windows installations. It may be absent from newer Windows 11 versions. Use the PowerShell Get-CimInstance commands instead when WMIC returns “not recognized” or produces no useful output. MSI notes WMIC’s deprecation.
Export the motherboard information from System Information
If you are collecting information for a technician, you can export the complete System Information report rather than copying individual fields.
Export an NFO file
Create the destination folder first if it does not already exist, then run:
msinfo32 /nfo C:\TEMP\TEST.NFO
System Information saves the report as an .nfo file. If the filename does not end in .nfo, Windows appends that extension automatically.
Export a text report
msinfo32 /report C:\TEMP\TEST.TXT
Include .txt yourself. Windows does not automatically add the text-file extension for the /report option.
After opening the report, search for BaseBoard Manufacturer or BaseBoard Product. The report also includes the BIOS information and other system details, so review it before sharing if it contains information you do not want to disclose. See Microsoft’s System Information documentation.
Check the motherboard in BIOS or UEFI
You can identify the board before Windows loads:
- Restart the computer.
- As it starts, repeatedly press F2 or Delete to enter BIOS/UEFI setup.
- Look at the opening or information page for the motherboard model and BIOS version.
Most motherboards use F2 or Delete, but the correct key and the screen layout vary by manufacturer. A laptop may use a different key or provide only limited hardware details in its firmware interface. Avoid changing settings while you are looking up the model.
Read the model from the motherboard itself
Shut down the computer, disconnect power, and remove the case panel only if you are comfortable doing so. The retail model name is commonly printed in large lettering:

The motherboard box and manual can also identify the model. However, those documents cannot prove that the installed board is the one originally purchased. A previous repair or upgrade may have replaced it, so use the printed label or Windows firmware information to confirm the board currently installed. MSI outlines common locations for the model marking.
Do not confuse the computer model with the motherboard model
Windows Settings is not normally the place to find the motherboard name. The path right-click Start > Settings > System > About shows details such as the device name, computer model, processor, installed RAM, Windows edition, Windows version, and system type. It does not provide the BaseBoard Manufacturer and BaseBoard Product fields used to identify the motherboard itself. See Microsoft’s Windows device information guide.
Similarly, System Manufacturer and System Model describe the complete computer through Win32_ComputerSystem. On a Dell, HP, Lenovo, or other branded computer, those fields may identify the laptop or desktop model, not the motherboard. If you need the board, use BaseBoard Manufacturer and BaseBoard Product, or query Win32_BaseBoard in PowerShell.
When Windows reports a generic or incorrect model
A result such as a board code, “To be filled by O.E.M.,” or a generic product name does not necessarily mean the command failed. The result comes from SMBIOS data programmed by the manufacturer. Some OEM desktops and laptops do not expose a consumer-facing retail motherboard name.
Try these checks in order:
- Compare msinfo32 with the PowerShell Win32_BaseBoard result.
- Check the BIOS/UEFI information page.
- Look up the computer’s service tag or serial number on the manufacturer’s support site.
- Inspect the board’s printed markings if it is a custom-built desktop.
- Check the original invoice, box, or manual, while remembering that paperwork does not confirm the current installed board.
Microsoft explains that these fields come from manufacturer-supplied hardware data, which may be unavailable or generic: Win32_BaseBoard documentation and computer information guidance.
Query another Windows computer
System Information can query a remote computer with:
msinfo32 /computer BIGSERVER
Replace BIGSERVER with the target computer name. A computer name, UNC name, IP address, or fully qualified domain name can be used. Your account must have appropriate permissions to access WMI on the remote computer; otherwise, the query may fail or return incomplete information. See Microsoft’s msinfo32 documentation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Important limitations
- Safe Mode: msinfo32 can run in Safe Mode, but Microsoft states that it cannot provide hardware information there. You may see system components and the software environment without useful motherboard details.
- Firmware data: Empty or inaccurate fields usually reflect incomplete SMBIOS information rather than a problem with PowerShell or System Information.
- Windows 10: These methods remain documented for Windows 10, although Microsoft support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10 after that date.

FAQ
What is the fastest way to find my motherboard model?
Press Windows + R, type msinfo32, and press Enter. Select System Summary, then read BaseBoard Manufacturer and BaseBoard Product.
Is BaseBoard Product the same as the motherboard model?
It is the manufacturer-defined baseboard product or part number and commonly serves as the motherboard model. On OEM computers, it may be an internal code or generic value rather than a retail name.
Why does Windows show a generic motherboard name?
The motherboard firmware may not expose a consumer-facing model name. Check the BIOS/UEFI screen, the board’s printed markings, or the computer manufacturer’s support page.
Can Windows Settings show the motherboard model?
Usually not. Settings > System > About identifies the complete computer and its Windows and hardware basics, but it does not normally show BaseBoard Manufacturer or BaseBoard Product.
Recommended Free Tools
Is WMIC still available in Windows 11?
Not necessarily. WMIC is a legacy, deprecated interface and may be missing from current Windows 11 installations. Use PowerShell with Get-CimInstance -ClassName Win32_BaseBoard instead.
How do I find the BIOS version as well as the motherboard model?
In msinfo32, read BIOS Version/Date. In PowerShell, run Get-CimInstance -ClassName Win32_BIOS | Select-Object SMBIOSBIOSVersion.
The Bottom Line
For most Windows PCs, msinfo32 is the simplest answer: open System Summary and read BaseBoard Manufacturer plus BaseBoard Product. Use PowerShell when you need a copyable command-line result or additional fields such as the serial number. If those values are generic, verify the model in BIOS/UEFI or inspect the motherboard directly.
